Bucks get Magloire for Mason

The Milwaukee Bucks continued to aggressively reshape their roster Wednesday by beating out several teams to acquire New Orleans/Oklahoma City center Jamaal Magloire, according to NBA front-office sources.

In a trade that will be announced later Wednesday, Milwaukee has agreed to send swingman Desmond Mason, its 2006 first-round pick and cash considerations to the Hornets for Magloire, an East All-Star in 2004.

The Bucks, according to sources, felt they needed a more physical presence on their front line to aid the development of No. 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut and the recently re-signed Dan Gadzuric.

Given Milwaukee's logjam of swingmen after retaining Michael Redd, trading for Jiri Welsch and signing Bobby Simmons, a trade involving Mason between now and the February deadline was somewhat inevitable. This one gives the Bucks an opportunity to play Magloire and Bogut together, with Simmons starting at the other forward spot. The Bucks also have Gadzuric and Joe Smith in what suddenly looks like a well-rounded frontcourt rotation.

The Hornets have been shopping Magloire for months as part of their own makeover, which accelerated in February when Baron Davis, another former All-Star, was dealt to Golden State.

Coach Byron Scott denied earlier this week that Magloire was available, but the Hornets rebuilding around the embryonic backcourt of Chris Paul and J.R. Smith and displaced from its home base in New Orleans for at least a season - seized the chance to add another 2006 first-rounder to their own and an athletic swingman with ties to the team's new home state.

Mason, entering his sixth season out of Oklahoma State, carries a career scoring average of 12.9 points per game and averaged a career-best 17.2 points last season.

Magloire played only 23 games in 2004-05 because of a fractured ring finger but averaged 13.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in the previous season. The five-year veteran's 19 points in the 2004 All-Star Game led the East.

What the hell? Do they want to play Magloire at PF or what? He's a pure C, FFS. Bogut, Gadzuric and Magloire - that'll present huge troubles when it comes to distributing playing time. But then again, a suggested lineup of Bogut and Magloire up front could actually work. This way Bogut could play in the high and Jamaal could man the low post.

doesn't seem right for both teams

WTF, what a shocking trade, I don't think it's very good. I agree with you with the playing time, but how the hell is Magloire worth Desmond Mason, A first round pick, and some money???? :shake:

i don't know it if it's good to play Bogut @PF...but we'll see.

Anyways, Bucks got better, and are deffinately a playoff team in the East IMO.

I think they thought Magloire will play PF. At least on D.

This is good for my fantasy team. I thought it was a fair trade since Milwaukee has Bobby Simmons, and New Orleans do kind of need a bit of help, but losing Magloire is a blow either way.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 4:32 am

Wow, this seems to be a rip off for the Hornets. Big men are a rare now adays.

I think the reason the hornets did this is to get anther dunker on there team. So the hornets can potentially have 3 candidates for the dunk contest next year lol.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:09 am

Well, this is a surprise, but I guess the Hornets didn't want to lose Magloire for zilch like they did with Baron Davis. They actually got a nice player in return and a potencial lottery pick for an overrated center, so that's not too bad.
I guess the Bucks are not too convinced about Bogut's readiness, coming out with a move like this, but I guess the kid is versatile enough to split some time at the four.
The Hornets will, at least be entertaining, with Andersen running up and down blocking shots and throwing down massive dunks, along with CP, JR Smith and Mason. With Mason, the Hornets will push the ball and play on the run, so I think Andersen may be a better fit for this style of play.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:34 am

I can see this working out for the Hornets

C : Brown
PF: Andersen
SF: Mason
SG: Smith
PG: Paul

Hmm weird for the Bucks. How would Joe Smith, Dan Gadzuric and Andrew Bogut Split time ? We will see.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:54 am

wow, good trade for the bucks. i don't think it should reallly be a problem, i can see bogut playing the four.. kinda seeing them being a vlade-chris webber tandem. the hornets on the other hand, oh man.. their frontline is pretty much fucked. their background is still pretty raw but they'll develop into a formidable duo. hopefully isiah thomas will save the day by fucking new york over and trade eddy curry and jamal crawford for chris andersen and a first round draft pick..

Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:56 am

I don't like this trade for both sides. The logjam in the swingman spot is finally gone, but now there'll be one at the center spot. Gadzuric and Bogut both need their share of minutes to develop, and adding Magloire to the mix isn't helping.

The Hornets lose a pretty decent center, although Magloire's a bit overrated. Their only big men are P.J. Brown and Chris Anderson, but I think of them as more as power fowards than centers, and both of them don't seem to have the bulk or inside presence that Jamaal has. I also don't like the fact that Mason will be taking away minutes from Rasual Butler. :x

Oh well, Toronto will be getting Magloire when his contract expires anyway. :D

Thu Oct 27, 2005 6:40 am

hmmm....interesting trade here.........dont know if this is gonna help both sides or not.....i think maggloire is playing PF and bogut is playing C, with gadzuric and joe smith being the backups. this clears the way for simmons to be starting, and MIL is in better shape......new orleans is obviously in rebuilding mode........milwaukee thinks they have a chance of contending, the reason why the draft pick was included......mason gives the hornets another highflyer, they should be an exciting team

this trade goes to milwaukee, cuz now the hornets front line is basically crap.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 7:38 am

J.R. Smith becomes the main offensive weapon...
it's his time to shine now..

Thu Oct 27, 2005 7:47 am

lol why are people saying magliore is overrated?

the birdman is a hack, he wouldn't make it past the 10:00 mark without drawing his 2nd foul

i'm hoping david west gets a chance to start

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:01 am

Was Horents GM drunk when he agreed on this offer?

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:02 am

i wouldn´t have traded mason.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:16 am

lol why are people saying magliore is overrated?

It's true that he's a legit double double threat every game, (plus he's Canadian  ) but I don't think his defence is very good and his best year was 13-10. It's always hard to find centers these days, but somehow I think that Jamaal isn't really all-star material like everyone says he is.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:21 am

I'm still deciding if this is good or bad for my fantasy League . Well ,the one I have with my friends , I have both Magloire + Bogut . I'm mad!!!! This trade doesn't make any sense!!

Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:26 am

lol people were saying he didn't deserve to be on the all star team yet he almost won MVP in that game

he isn't overpaid either and i don't see anyone saying he is all star material...

Ditto

Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:08 am

very interesting trade..and definately a shock..i thought magloire was on his way to chicago , since they dont have many big men since eddy*cough*asshole*cough* curry left for nyc
but for the bucks its a good pickup, its going to be hard to defend both magloire and bogut if they on the court at the same time(unless they playiong the pistons.lol..).
hornets are going to be interesting to watch, maybe they have another trade up there sleeve?? (nene any1??)

Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:20 am

he isn't overpaid either and i don't see anyone saying he is all star material...

Tell that to the people who voted for him to the all-star game. Winning the MVP in the all-star game doesn't really say much either....

Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:21 am

The Hornets looks weak inside now, without Maglorie, there will be less points in the paint. Bad move by the Hornets. For the Bucks, their frontcourt are crowded, Simmons will be the starting SF and I think Bogut will be starting at C and Maglorie at PF. With a healthy TJ Ford, the Bucks should be in the playoffs.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:23 am

Wow, miss out on a whole 11 points? Yeah, they're doomed.

Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:30 am

No matter what the Grizzlies do, they just can't get their big man :shake:
