R.I.P Jason Collier... Soo young

yeah man it was good to see him finally get some PT but man that sucks to die so young

Props to the guy and R.I.P., but retiring his jersey would be a bit too much. I mean, it's logical that NJ retired Drazen's number after he died in a car crash, simply because of his global influence in basketball and because he was a star of his team who died before reaching his prime or doing everything he could. Ditto with Boston's Lewis (minus the influence). But retiring Collier's jersey is simply overreacting. If Ryan Bowen was eaten alive by one of T-Mac's dogs, would Houston retire his number? I think not. But it would be a classy move if Atlanta pays the rest of Collier's salary to his family plus throws them a decent pension.

sad news....whilst I didn't really know his game too well, the loss to his family is what is the saddest note....

RIP Jason....

Umm...

He was actually the only player that I had a link to a pic of (of him) in my Favourites. Don't really know why... this is it:

Hi everyone I'm back and that news terribly shocked me... I didn't see him play so much at TV but I know he was a nice player. When I saw it I didn't want to believe it but it is true... That's sad for the NBA. He was so young, RIP Jason Collier.

RIP Mr. Collier

Collier was one of the good guys... He didn't get much playing time, but always did what the coach asked of him and was happy with the role given. He was the veteran of the Atlanta team and all of the players have said that he was a great guy to have around...

It's always sad to see guys die at the age of 28, but sometimes bad things happen to good people... It's sad, every time.

I wish his family and friends strength to deal with his loss...

Rest in peace Jason Collier...

Not much to say that hasn't already been said. Extremely sad and shocking news, to hear of someone so young falling victim to cardiac arrest, especially when he didn't have any genetic disorders (or at least that would seem to be the case). RIP.

ESPN - Jason Collier's family asked that results of his autopsy be kept private until after Wednesday's funeral.

Collier, the Atlanta Hawks ' 28-year-old center, died early Saturday after he had trouble breathing in his north Georgia home.

"We need to make sure we're very thorough with this," Forsyth County Coroner Lauren McDonald III said Monday. "It's a situation that may take time. I really don't want to say too much until after the service, out of respect for the family, as far as talking about the results. They would appreciate if we could not discuss that aspect until after the service."

On Monday in Charlotte, N.C., Collier's uniform hung in an empty locker as the Hawks lost a preseason game to the Charlotte Bobcats . The team said it will leave the uniform in the locker and set out a chair for Collier before each game.

Players will wear permanent black shoulder patches on their uniforms to honor Collier, who was a part-time starter the last two seasons for Atlanta after three years in Houston. He began his college career at Indiana before transferring to Georgia Tech.

McDonald said his office is pulling Collier's medical records from the Rockets and Hawks and forwarding that information to the pathologist.

Foul play is not a suspected cause of death, he said.

"There is not anything that would cause anyone to think there was any foul play," McDonald said.

"I look at this guy as being as healthy as can be. It shocked me and shocked the family and of course the sports community. We want to make sure we do this very thoroughly, just as on any 28-year-old you would want to know, even if he wasn't in the good health Mr. Collier was."

Well they might aswell retire somebody's jersey cause they never are gonna retire a jersey due to a player having a great career there anymore.

The Hawks have actually retired a couple of jerseys - Nique's 21 and I'm sure they retired Bob Pettit's too. ;)

Retiring Collier's jersey is a nice gesture but I agree it's a bit of a knee jerk, emotional reaction. Then again, it wouldn't be unprecedented.

Yeah but there is a big difference to what the Hawks were when Nique and Perkytit were there compared to what they have now. I doubt Josh Smith will be anything special nor will Marvin Williams well at least for the Hawks...he'll leave after his contract is up.

Retire a jersey while they have the chance.
