BREAKING NEWS : CURRY A KNICK !

Tue Oct 04, 2005 11:33 am

AP - The Bulls agreed to trade center Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks on Monday, ending a contentious negotiation in which Chicago insisted the restricted free agent take a DNA test over a heart problem.

Chicago also sent veteran center Antonio Davis to the Knicks, who traded away forwards Tim Thomas, Michael Sweetney and Jermaine Jackson. Several draft choices also changed hands in the deal, according to an executive in the Eastern Conference who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The trade was expected to be finalized Tuesday.

In making the announcement, an obviously frustrated Bulls general manager John Paxson did not specify what Chicago got in return and did not field questions.

"We will have an announcement tomorrow morning," Bulls public relations director Sebrina Brewster said Monday night. "All we can say right now is we traded Eddy to the Knicks."

Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said the team declined comment on Paxson's announcement.

bulls.com - Bulls GM John Paxson announced that the team has traded center Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks . Details of the trade will be posted as soon as they become available. “From a basketball standpoint, I understand what I'm doing," said Paxson. "But I have an obligation to this organization and the people I work for to do the right thing. And I did the right thing."

John Paxson Discusses the Eddy Curry Trade

John Paxson and Eddy Curry at an April press conference Paxson and the Bulls had offered Curry $400,000 annually for the next 50 years, guaranteed even if he failed the genetic test.

October 3, 2005 – Below are comments from Bulls' Executive Vice President-Basketball Operations John Paxson, speaking from the Berto Center at the team's Media Day and discussing a trade that sent Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks.

An official release will be made by the team either late Monday or Tuesday.

“This has been about as uncomfortable and unusual a situation I could ever imagine. We've attempted from day one to do the right thing, and I'm absolutely confident that we have in every way we went about it. And in a lot of ways we've met resistance in trying to gather all the information we feel we need.”

On Curry’s refusal to undergo the genetic testing:
“I would never put a player on the floor in a Chicago Bulls uniform if I didn't do everything in my power to find out all the information that was available to us. You can debate genetic testing ‘til you're blue in the face. But from what I know, from what I've learned over the last six months, that test could have helped us determine the best course of action.”

On offering Curry a deal where he would have received $400,000 annually for 50 years:
“He would have an above-average lifestyle that would put him in a position that most other people aren't in. Our intention through that whole process was to show him that we did care about him and that we were concerned about his well-being.”

On the players received, to be announced:
“From a basketball standpoint, I understand what I'm doing. But I have an obligation to this organization and the people I work for to do the right thing. And I did the right thing. That's all I've got to say.”

Wow, nice trade for the Knicks, but I thought they got Jerome James for a center, although I would say Curry is better. Keep us posted (Y)

Ohhh nice for the Knicks!

If they make the trade..the team will be filled with talented young players..
ready to shine..

Hmm, Bulls.com are reporting it? This is a risk for New York, but a good risk. Jerome James is insurance, and Curry is developing into one of the dominant big men in the east.

I wonder who New York gave up. Im guessing Crawford was involved.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:00 pm

I'm not sure if Crawford would have been involved as he seemed to be the Knicks player really pushing for the trade as Curry and him are good friends (according to an article I read on real GM a couple of days ago). I'm guessing Thomas (aka deadweight) and Sweetney + Ariza/Lee. Thats a fair bit to give up for 1 guy, so maybe the Bulls through someone else in.

I'm just hoping they got Ariza or Lee in the deal. That way the loss of Curry can be replaced with the development of one of those 2 down the track.

What about Frye ? What will happen with him.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:05 pm

I guess he'll be shifted to PF. Might suit him more while he develops physically.

I'm wondering how J.James is feeling about this, probably not as motivated as he was yesterday as he's probably just lost his starting position.

Good trade for the Bulls. Curry will be a star fir a lil bit but when LB sees he doesnt play much D and Eddy cant rebound, Jerome James will be starting by the end of the year. I really hope the bulls got Ariza or David Lee, those two guys have bright futures.

paxson better come away with at least a 1st round draft pick

zeke better make curry sign a waiver of some sort or he'll be in some big trouble if God forbid Curry dies

Fuck, that'd make one hell of a retirement gift.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:59 pm

i believe that's 20 million dollars, and quite easy on the tax as well because it's paid in 50 paymentos!! $20M for doing nothing!!!

see there is a huge risk here. What if he has problems and can't play half way down the season? Knicks screwed again?
im not happy till he is healthy, bad trade for knicks if he has problems that will keep him out of action.

ANOTHER DAMN PF FOR THE KNICKS?? But the good thing is Davis' contract expires at the end of the season... but so is Tim Thomas. They are soooo overloaded with PFs.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 2:02 pm

The Knicks will be fun to watch. Defense is still a major problem though. I'd trade JC for a good allround young player.

Curry has played C all his career. He ain't a PF.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 2:05 pm

im talking about Antonio Davis

Tue Oct 04, 2005 2:08 pm

Not a bad trade but Curry's health still remains a issue. How many games can he play in this season? Curry should boost the Knicks frontcourt depth with his scoring and rebounding abilities if he is health. Still, this is a gamble move by the Knicks.

Tue Oct 04, 2005 2:21 pm

wow.. tyson chandler as the starting C for bulls? our PF expected to be the motivation-less tim thomas? or meat and potatoes michael sweetney?

i hope curry turns out to be a 2nd coming of jerome james

oh yeh trudat hes a pf

Tue Oct 04, 2005 5:19 pm

why the hell did Bulls give AD away?

They lost a lot of depth now....I'm questioning this move. Now they have Tim Thomas... that should help.
