Raptors Bringing In A Trio Of Point Guards For Camp

24th September, 2005 - 10:14 am

The Toronto Star- The team has invited three players with disparate backgrounds and abilities to fight for a spot on the roster with an unguaranteed contract.

Robert Pack, a 36-year-old veteran of 13 NBA seasons, Tierre Brown, a 26-year-old who was a washout with the team's 2003 summer league team and Corey Williams, 28, who has no NBA experience at all, will join the team at training camp starting Oct. 4 in St. Catharines.

"The idea is we've got three completely different types of point guard," general manager Rob Babcock said yesterday. "There's a lot of different ways we can go."

Pack has played with Portland, Denver, Washington, New Jersey, Dallas, Minnesota and New Orleans in his well-travelled NBA career; Brown has been with four NBA teams.

Of Williams, the 6-foot-3, 28-year-old who did not play college basketball, Babcock said, "He is the unknown entity."

Brown, who played in the Los Angeles Summer League for Toronto in 2003 and did nothing to warrant an invite to training camp, has been with Houston, Cleveland, New Orleans and the Los Angeles Lakers .

None is expected to seriously challenge incumbent Rafer Alston or rookie Jose Calderon for a spot in the rotation, although Babcock said each will get a chance to show his stuff in camp and eight exhibition games.

I wouldn't mind having either Robert Pack or Tierre Brown.

They are only supposed to be third stringers, so they're expected to suck. We already have Calderon and Alston anyway, so I wouldn't mind if one of them made the team and was extra insurance.

I think Pack would be the best one. That team needs more veterans and leaders, not marginal players with some tiny grain of potential.
They were talking about signing Kevin Willis a while back. Maybe that will still happen. Willis and Pack would be great for that rebuilding team.

Willis and Pack good for rebuilding?

Those two are close to retiring (per se), and I'm sure they were probably good players at their prime, but Raptors need someone either a talented young player, or an experienced player who isn't pushing 40.

If they sign any of them, so it happens. I just hope babcock finds any players that are at least half decent, not fresh rookies, or old desperate men who would just about go to any team just to wear an NBA uniform

And oh, Eric williams wants to stay with the raps...should we keep him? And whats the deal with Aaron williams? He's got about the same size as Araujo but he rarely gets to play.

He sucks. It's that simple. I'd rather play someone like Araujo and at least attempt to develop him by giving him playing time; rather than just give it to some bum who isn't in any of our future plans.

well now, the raps are really screwed. i thought if jay wil came the team, we might have some hope, but i don't like any of the 3 PGs that they are trying to get.

is it possible to sign one of them until alvin williams returns or would it have to be until the end of the season? what kind of contract would that be called? Substitute-for-someone-until-return contract? Terms of contract: Player agrees to play for raptors until Alvin Williams returns from injury.

What the hell? All of a sudden we the lose a potential third stringer and we're screwed? I sure as hell don't think so.

Jay Williams isn't going to be averaging even close to decent numbers; especially as a third stringer where he'll barely see any playing time. There is a chance that Jay Williams still might be able to get back to the level where he was before, but the odds are that he won't, and even if he manages to return to his former self; his numbers (from his rookie season) aren't very impressive.

I mean when you have 10-12 young players it's good to have a couple super-old players, like Willis was in Atlanta last year. He played NBA games before Josh Smith was even born.

They don't really need super-old players...just veterans who either are at the twilight of their prime years or someone who is at their peak. Just someone with experience will suffice I believe.

I doubt Pack will be a factor. The guy is on the verge of retirement. But I remember him during his days in Denver teaming up with Dikembe and Rose (Y)
