Padgett Joins Nets, Murray Next?

4th September, 2005 - 10:43 am

NorthJersey.com - The Nets have found their replacement for Brian Scalabrine and filled the spot that Robert "Tractor" Traylor was expected to have.

Veteran forward Scott Padgett has agreed to terms on a multiyear deal with New Jersey, pending a physical examination that he will take next week, Nets president Rod Thorn said Saturday.

The 6-foot-9 Padgett, who has averaged 4.6 points in 355 games for the Jazz and Rockets, will get the $1.6 million the Nets had remaining on their midlevel exception. That was originally supposed to go to Traylor, but he failed his physical and the Nets voided their deal with him last week.

With Padgett, the Nets would have 13 players under contract. They are expected to add one more, and it could be Lamond Murray.

As expected, the veteran swingman, who played college ball with Jason Kidd at California, was waived by the Toronto Raptors on Friday. Once Murray clears waivers, the Nets could offer him a minimum contract, which is all they have left under salary-cap rules.

Other shooters who are on the Nets' radar are Wesley Person, Jason Kapono, Casey Jacobsen and DerMarr Johnson.

I think I would've gone for one of them as opposed to Scott Padgett.

But they needed someone to fill in Scalabrine who played the PF/SF position. Those people who were mentioned below dont play the PF and that's why they needed Padgett. I also would rather see them take Kapono, Jacobsen or Johnson than Murray.

Scottie is a really dangerous three pointer shooter. He'll hit everything as long as he's open. I've seen him sink 12 three's in a row during shootaround!

Oh noes! Than instant champions in the next 5 years for sure!

I thought Dermarr and Kapono re-signed already? Or is this just an older article.

I've seen Eddie Gill hit like 20 3s in a row during shootaround. What's your point?

Well Nets finally found someone to take 4 spot... will he start over Collins?

Mon Sep 05, 2005 8:40 am

Wicked Scott Padgett!

Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:10 am

Yes , I pray he starts over Collins , god I hate that guy . He is seriously a trash player.

Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:45 am

there's nothing wrong with Twin.. he's a solid gritty defender who does all the 1 percenters.. he's just been a little tentative on the inside.. barring a blockbuster trade to get someone big @ 4 I can guarentee Jason Collins will be starting next season.. and I'm okay with that..

Scott Padget is a great shooter..Good acquisition by the Nets.He is a big man with a great touch from the perimeter. After NJ had Keith Van Horn finally they have the same player like him

I suppose we can now wait for the "Padgett won't be heading to New Jersey; fails physical" announcement. And just a thought: how did Vince Carter ever pass the Nets' physical?
