I think he meant that Phoenix has signed Gary Payton....... I seriously don't think that trading away the current MVP will do the team any good.....

he see this as a chance to win a ring. i don't blame him

Good signing i guess but what does this mean for Barbosa?
Wed Aug 17, 2005 3:35 pm
Barbosa wont get many minutes, again, but he'll have the best of past and present to teach him
I think Pheonix will play Payton and Nash together in the backcourt quite a bit with this signing, Nash is one of the best shooters in the league afterall
Wed Aug 17, 2005 3:44 pm
Barbosa probably hates this team now lol, everytimes their's hope of him getting minutes, someone else get's added to the mix.

looks like Phx are gonna be legit contenders now.
Thomas, Grant, Payton and possibly Finley. Great summer.
Wed Aug 17, 2005 4:32 pm
Phoenix was a contender last season... Had they had Johnson playing all of the play-offs the rigors of the four guys would have been less and they would have had more energy to throw at San Antonio.
Kurt Thomas, Brian Grant, Gary Payton aren't such grand additions, but Finley would be... The reason why PHX did so good last season was that they had three guys who could jack up the three with a good percentage and they also had a highly mobile under the basket unit... So to repeat the success they need to get more from Amare (which I'm sure they will) and get Finley to shoot the three with Nash to balance out the loss of Richardson and Johnson...
PHX traded Richardson away so they could pay up Johnson to stay and the selfish sob went and signed an offer sheet with Atlanta of all places and asked them not to match it... Johnson will regret this move come next april... Phoenix will be heading to the play-offs with another ~60 win season under their belt and Atlanta will still most likely stumble and fall into obscurity where they have always been.
Phoenix lineup after the Johnson deal and if this Payton thing goes through and they get Finley...
Amare
Marion
Nash
Finley
Payton
Grant
Thomas
Barbosa
Diaw
And others as well... That is looking like a deep lineup... So maybe Marion, Amare and Nash won't have to play 45 minutes every night, but only 40 to get the job done with a more solid bench...

If Payton is going to be a Sun then I am very happy for him to have a chance win his first title there. Nash is definitely going to be the starting PG but will Payton be unhappy about his role in Phoenix since he will be coming off the bench. Though, Payton can play some SG when Nash is the PG. Suns are going to be tough to beat. I like to see they beat the Spurs this season.

Payton's been written off because of his age (then again, isn't everyone over the age of 25?), but I think it's a good move for Phoenix. Losing JJ is a blow but the signing of Payton and Brian Grant - while not compensating for the loss of an up and coming young player - compensates for some of the role players they've lost so far this offseason while adding depth, veteran experience and defense.
Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:39 pm
No chance to Phoenix to run up in playoff without Nash.
I'm not sure this trade will really happen, but I don't see any reason for Phoenix to accept this trade.
Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:45 pm
They're not accepting a trade. They'd be signing Gary Payton outright, as a free agent. They lose nothing except cap space/provisions.
Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:49 pm
great move for both payton and the suns. he can still help the team even at his age plus the suns get an upgrade for barbosa. sucks for barbosa as mentioned above though
Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:02 pm
So if they can sign Grant and Payton... can they also sign Finley?

Ok then it's good move.
Thanks for info.
Andrew, do you think Payton will get enough minutes in comparison to last years?

i my opinion nice pickup for the suns!
Thu Aug 18, 2005 1:58 am
It looks like the suns are going to have a fast pace unit and a slower paced unit. nice pickup either way.
Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:07 am
Payton's already stated earlier in the summer that he'd be more than willing to backup Nash.
Thu Aug 18, 2005 3:08 am
Finley ain't gonna sign with Phoenix... they can only give him a minimum contract, and Finley will never agree to these terms!

That's where I disagree. Payton can get up the floor as well as anyone. Really, what does Steve Nash have that Payton doesn't besides a jumpshot? This allows Nash to feel comfortable in resting without seeing a dropoff in his team's play, something that was seen with Barbosa.
Plus, Nash is injury-prone, and let's face it -- Barbosa was never and he probably still isn't ready to take PG duties when Nash is out.

It's only a great summer if they do get Finley, which is tough since there's a lotta takers out there.

He's already getting paid his Dallas contract, so a lesser contract wouldn't hurt at all.
