WALTHAM - There are a few theories floating around as to why Gerald Green tumbled down to the 18th pick in the NBA Draft.
Here's one: Some NBA executives were wary of Green's right ring finger, which is about an inch short.
When he was 11, Green was playing in his Houston home, where he had put up a makeshift hoop over a doorway. While wearing his mother's class ring, he caught the ring on a nail that was holding up the basket.
"I was trying to see how high I could jump," he said.
Almost a decade later, Green's father, Gerald Sr., still cringes when talking about the accident.
"They couldn't re-attach it," the elder Green said. "So they had to shave off part of his finger. I had nightmares about it."
"It was amazing that no one (from the NBA teams) asked me about it," agent Andrew Vye said. "I brought it up because I didn't want it to be a surprise to people when he was in Chicago (for pre-daft camp)."
The only surprise was that Green was there at No. 18.
Jus an interesting fact for all you guys to know

Yikes. That must have hurt... Don't know how that can affect his mechanics, though...

It could affect his slashing abilities and ballhandling. Perhaps he can't palm the ball because of it.

I really fail to see how this would've made him slide so far. I mean Andrew Bogut's white and he still got picked #1.

That's a good point. If I was a basketball player I'd rather have 3 fingers and be black than be white.

^ but he's European, and lived in Australia
Anyways, it doesn't look like it's affected his ability to shoot, dribble etc, so I don't see how that could be a factor.

Fortunately, it's his ring finger. If it were his index or middle fingers (the primary shooting ones), he'd have been in real trouble.
I always worried about getting my fingers caught in the net when leaping. Scary to see that that sort of thing can happen.

He was born and raised in Australia
Of course if he turns out to be a bust, he's European

Bah, I wouldn't be concerned if he was missing an entire pinkie. It's only an inch off the ring finger, and it scares people away? Sure, if it was the thumb, index or middle finger on his shooting hand, I'd be concerned, but this is nothing.

He has said in a few interviews that is actually helps him get off the shot faster. So what the hey?
From what I've seen it doesn't bother him at all, so I have no worries.

Of course you don't have worries, you have all fingers on board
. Man, what if he wins ten NBA titles, how the hell he will show them
, by fingers I mean.

LOL, man, look at the picture, he HAS NO ring finger!!
Wed Aug 10, 2005 8:12 am
Actually, yeah, that does look like two inches off, at least. Definitely not "an inch off" or "shaved off"

I sliced a finger on a chain net once. Just had to keep it wrapped up for a week or so.

he'll probably turn into a great player 2 years down the road and everytime he has a game against the 17teams that passed up on him will explode for 50pts(just a dream)

Ben Wallace's hands is too short for his size but his impact in the game is great...That means you dont have to judge people if his lacking size.Size doesnt matter as long as you play with dedication...get my point baby!!!!

get my point baby!!!!
Is that rhetorical?

Seems a real petty reason to shy away from drafting him, though Dr Jack might have just been let off the hook.
