Wilkins to Minnesota

Damien Wilkins, a Sonics restricted free agent, is expected to sign a five-year, $15 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA sources say.

The Sonics, who were hoping to retain the 25-year-old forward, have the option to match the Timberwolves' offer but are unlikely to do so because of the amount of money in the deal.

Wilkins, who averaged 6.3 points in 29 games during his rookie campaign last season and performed admirably in the playoffs in place of injured regulars Rashard Lewis and Vladimir Radmanovic, had also been considering an offer from Portland.

The Trail Blazers are now led by ex-Sonics coach Nate McMillan.

The Timberwolves pursued Wilkins based on advice from new coach Dwane Casey, who left the Sonics' staff this summer after 11 seasons with the club to take over in Minnesota.

He stepped up last year when Rashard Lewis was gone. He can really play. He is Dominique Wilkins nephew by the way.

LOL, didn't know he was Dom's nephew!
He was good in that little run he had last year, but I'm not sure if he can keep that up long enough.

He's only been in the league for one season.... He went undrafted and was mainly a bench warmer in Seattle, but he played quite well when he was given the minutes from the Rashard Lewis injury. He'll probably be a good role player at best, just like his father.

Bravo Minnesota. You have done two awesome signings that do nothing to solve any of your problems. Bravo. Mark Madsen and Damien Wilkins. Do they really think they're going to improve? Or that KG will magically make them go to the playoffs? Do they even want to win?
What are they doing? They're the team that needs the most overhaul and they've done nothing. Either they have a big trade planned or...do they just want to tank it this time?

 I thought it was a coincidence when I saw the resemblence.

Eh, he's not much. He made some nice intangibles during the series, but other than that, he's another Brian Cardinal.

At least he'll be paid 3 million dollars a year for the net five years. That's a good business development. :D

Wow, now all we need is Dominique's son to play, and the Wilken's'll give the Barry's a run for their money.

One might say "basketball's in his blood" and he had a couple of good games when Lewis went down in the playoffs but a five year deal - even at a reasonable $3 million per year - doesn't seem like a wise investment when we're talking about a player who has 36 games in the NBA under his belt and modest numbers in under 20 minutes per game.

What does that mean?

Anyways, I'm here in Florida on my Aunt's computer. I haven't really been keeping up with this stuff. I don't think this is really true, however. I don't think the Sonics will let Wilkens just walk away for nothing so I believe they will match. In the few games I actually saw Wilkens play (including the game at Target Center) he impressed me. I don't want him to get a long term deal though.

He'll be a decent player off the bench, but he's not a starter.

Apparently, the Wolves just signed an offical offer sheet for Damien Wilkens. 5 years, 15 million. The Sonics have one week to match.

This is a good signing, they were discussing it over the radio. I've seen Wilkens play a few times and the guy is good. And the 5 year deal is somethign you do to lock him up and watch him explode before you very eyes. I hope Sonics don't match. (Y)
