Abdur-Rahim fails physical, imperils deal wrote:LINK
When the test results came back, and optimism quickly turned to uncertainty, Rod Thorn was left to explain why the Nets biggest off-season acquisition was sitting at home 1,000 miles away instead of addressing the media about his new team yesterday.
Less than 48 hours after the Nets president completed a sign-and-trade deal with Portland to land Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the trade was put on hold after the veteran 6-9 forward didn't pass a routine physical exam. The Nets gave up a future first-round pick and a trade exception for Abdur-Rahim, who signed a six-year, $38 million contract Tuesday before undergoing a physical with team orthopedist Michael Kelly.
The Nets canceled a scheduled news conference to introduce Abdur-Rahim and fellow free-agent acquisition Jeff McInnis -- who passed his physical -- when concerns over Abdur-Rahim's knee surfaced. Abdur-Rahim, 28, underwent a "knee operation" in high school, according to Thorn, but hasn't had any recurring knee problems in his nine-year NBA career.
"I was just shocked by it," said Thorn of results of the physical. "It was something that we were certainly unaware of. He was evidently unaware of it also. He's been working out all summer. He's had no problems at all. So, I'm hopeful that it will work out."
Thorn said the team was "soliciting other opinions" to get more information on Abdur-Rahim's knee condition, but did not specify what team doctors were concerned about. He admitted the decision to finalize or nullify the trade "probably will play out over the next few days" and "the deal will either go through as it has already been done or it won't." The Nets have until August 12 to complete the trade. The team exception expires August 9.
"To our best knowledge, Shareef was healthy," Blazers' general manager John Nash said. "I don't know what caused them to seek another opinion. We made the trade with the belief that it was in our best interest. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't. And it's null and void."
Thorn notified Abdur-Rahim about the decision to hold off on the deal Wednesday afternoon, prompting the veteran to fly home to Atlanta to await further word. Abdur-Rahim, who missed 22 games with the Blazers last season after undergoing elbow surgery, wasn't surprised by the results of the physical. He said questions about his knee have surfaced after every physical he has taken.
"It's something that has shown up since I was drafted," said Abdur-Rahim, who has averaged 19.8 points and 8.1 rebounds in nine seasons with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. "Every place I've been has known about it and asked questions about it. I never had any knee injuries (in the NBA) or missed any games. It doesn't bother me.
"Whether it's my elbow or knee, none of these things have stopped my productivity. It's really not a big deal. But the Nets have a responsibility to make sure everything's okay. It comes down to them doing their due diligence. What the Nets comfort level is, I can't speak to that."
Abdur-Rahim said he wasn't scheduled to seek a second medical opinion on the knee, and will wait to hear from the Nets.
"At this point, I don't have any plans of seeing anyone else," said Abdur-Rahim, who averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds last season. "(The Nets) may speak to their doctors or put their heads together to just talk about what they're seeing. I think they just wanted to get more clarity to feel more comfortable.
"It's been kind of a roller coaster -- the negotiation process, trying to get Portland to do a sign and trade, and now this. It hasn't been a super smooth situation. But I feel good that everything will take care of itself and be okay."
The snafu with the Abdur-Rahim deal could affect how the Nets pay McInnis, who signed a one-year deal for $3.5 million plus a player option in 2006-07. If the Abdur-Rahim deal falls through, the Nets could decide to use the trade exception in a sign-and-trade with Cleveland for McInnis.
"Jeff definitely will be here," Thorn said. "It's a matter of how we end up signing him. We've used our trade exception as of right now. If we don't use our trade exception, maybe we'll use it in another way."
Thorn also admitted the team "started looking at other options" because of the uncertainty surrounding Abdur-Rahim.
"He was a big piece to our puzzle," Thorn said. "If we don't complete the trade, we've lost a quality player."
Veteran Dale Davis could be an option if the Abdur-Rahim deal falls through. Chubby Wells, the agent for the 14-year veteran, said Thorn had "exploratory" discussions with him last week, but felt the Nets wouldn't have enough money to sign Davis.
"Depending on what happens (with the Abdur-Rahim deal)," Wells said, "The Nets are definitely a team in the mix."
