(August 3, 2005) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have signed free-agent point guard Jose Calderon. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Calderon, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, has spent the past six seasons in the Spanish pro leagues, the past four with Tau Ceramica. He led Tau to a second-place finish in last season’s Euroleague Final Four.

“We are very excited to be able to reach an agreement to bring Jose to the NBA,” said Raptors General Manager Rob Babcock. “He is exactly what we are looking for in a true point guard.

“Even though he won’t turn 24-years-old until September, he has plenty of experience in international competition.”

Calderon has averaged 10.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 214 regular-season games. He owns a career field goal percentage of .541 (488-902). In Euroleague play, Calderon has averaged 9.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 58 contests.

Calderon averaged 12.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 39 regular-season games in 2003-04. He shot .567 (114-201) from the field and .823 (107-130) from the foul line. In 2003-04, he led Tau to the Spanish National Cup (King’s Cup). In 2002-03, he captured a silver medal with the Spanish National Team at the 2003 European Championship. He also averaged a career-high 17.5 points that season.

Calderon was a member of the Spanish National Team that participated in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Not the one in 05-06. It belongs to the Pacers.

2.0 assists in 214 regular-season games.

Only 2.0 assists per game for a "true point guard." I don't know if I should be impressed :?

Don't you have any hope that the Pacers will win the next 237 NBA championships?

Well, I heard that assists only count in that league if the player does not dribble the ball to get a field goal, so I'm guessing he'll probably have a better assist number.

Yes, now all Toronto needs is Reece Gaines and Mark Pope and our dominance of the NBA will be complete.

Why'd you post after your own post? Keep it in the same post.

 The way he posts it, you might actually be inclined to think that.

 Ouch.

:shake:

What a waste of a thread. Anyways, there's this spanish reggaeton artist named Tego Calderon, any connections?

Just playing. What a minor signing, I could care less.

I'm sorry, but that belongs to the HEAT.

Jackal, minor? It'll affect the team rather heavily I would guess. The player may not be big stuff, but a solid pick-up.

Calderon is a nice player.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:23 am

Well, quite minor. It could affect the team, but they aren't going any place anytime soon. So yeah, pretty minor.

But if the signing is big for the team (no matter how minor the team) the signing would be more than minor, neh?

splitting hairs here, but am so booooooored

Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:53 am

 Too much minor major words for me, I give up.

This was a huge signing for Toronto. As Indy said, watch them win the next 273 championships. :P

Only if they ink Villanueva, he is after all a #7 pick that Babcock scouted in a way no other man did. He is the shiat.

Thu Aug 04, 2005 11:08 am

He has been already signed.

OMG he said itz 237 j00 nUb!!!!

Well this is a solid pickup for the Raptors. Rafer Alston showed us that he was a bit of a headcase and a chucker last season, so we'll need better a better backup than Milt "I don't know the meaning of arc when shooting a jumper" Palacio. Roko Ukic also signed with some Euro team until he's at least 24, so I think Calderon should fit in nicely.

Fri Aug 05, 2005 11:22 am

I still prefered Ukic, but this guy sounds like a nice addition to the raps. Now all we need is an OK center to "back up" Arujo.

Fri Aug 05, 2005 11:28 am

Hopefully Araujo improves.
