Rudy Gay and Greg Oden

Tue Jul 26, 2005 9:01 am

What do you guys think of Rudy Gay and Greg Oden?

Mr. Gay is being compared to Scottie Pippen and Oden to David Robinson.

Is that fair enough?

Tue Jul 26, 2005 9:24 am

Oden can flat out play.

The kid is amazing.

No, they're not a quarter of the players that Pippen and Robinson became. Give these guys a break -- they're only like 18 and 19 years old.

I do believe Oden isn't even 18 .

Indy, Oden is from Indiana, isn't he? Have you watched him play? Could you give us some kind of a scouting report?

Tue Jul 26, 2005 5:15 pm

I don't know any of these 2 players so I can't add any comments about them.

Tue Jul 26, 2005 5:19 pm

VanK, I could give you a much better scouting report on guys like Monta Ellis, Gerald Green and O.J Mayo, who I have actually played against, but I'll give Oden a shot.

He's a tenacious player who can absolutly out play you in every aspect of the game. The guy has an amazing amount of low post skill, and he can shoot the ball from outside pretty well for someone his size. The David Robinson comparison doesn't really fit. I can't really think of a player who he's like, he's pretty unique.

His downside is the same as a lot of guys his age, he doesn't really know the game well enough. That will come with age though.

I don't know any of these 2 players so I can't add any comments about them.

Man, you know what? It was totally worth posting this. Great job (Y)

Thanks, dude (Y). I totally forgot that you're a HS ballplayer. Another question for you: is Bill Walker underrated? Some are saying that he could end up being better player than Mayo, with his all his basketball and psychical talent. Plus, is Mayo a ballhog? Reports (and numbers) from the 2005 Las Vegas AAU Tournaments are showing that he certainly loves to shot a lot :).

It's good to have someone who had actually seen these players play/played against them (Y).

Tue Jul 26, 2005 6:05 pm

To be honest, I've never seen Walker play. The only thing I know about him is that he's got an NBA body and is very strong.

There is no doubt about it that Mayo is a ballhog. He is a lot like Gerald Green in the sense that he walks around as if he is a living miracle. Don't believe the bullshit he spews in interviews. The guy thinks he makes MJ look like a scrub.

He needs to get his head screwed on straight if he wants to be sucessfull in the NBA, because right now he will get chewed up.

Oden is a much more modest type player I think, and he will be sucessful right off the bat. Especially with the year he'll have at OSU under his belt.

You haven't seen Walker play? Him and OJ are on the same team.

Not the same AAU team

In matter of fact, I believe they are on the same AAU team.

Our first stop was the Foothill gym to catch the D1 Greyhounds versus the Southern California All-Stars. OJ Mayo continued his "shoot first, shoot second" game-plan in this contest, shooting 8-25 (including 1-12 from 3-point range) for 28 points. He added 7 boards but only managed to dish out 2 assists in the 87-83 loss. While nobody can question his talent, perhaps Mayo is starting to believe his own hype.

His teammate, Bill Walker, had another solid outing, scoring 20 points on 8-15 shooting. The 6'5" shooting guard is an impressive physical specimen. He's the top athlete in attendance and he still has two years of high school remaining. Everyone knows about his thunderous dunks, but his improved handle and solid shooting stroke have shown that he's much more than "just a dunker."

For the SoCal All-Stars, Kevin Love continued to prove that he's nearly unguardable at this level. He dropped 31 points on 9-15 shooting and pulled down 16 rebounds. He's a bulldog down on the block and draws fouls like a seasoned professional. By the way, he's 16-years-old.

Fiery young point guard Brandon Jennings looked geared up to match up with Mayo and rose to the challenge. The young point guard scored 24 points on 9-12 shooting and dished out 10 assists. Chase Budinger continued his impressive play with 15 points.

Sharp-shooting Taylor King has looked a little overwhelmed in this tournament. If his jumper isn't falling (which it hasn't been), he can't really help out his team in any other ways. He should have a terrific college career, but he hasn't appeared to be the elite-level recruit some people keep insisting he is.

They were also playing together against Oden, so they really are teamates on the AAU team.

Bill Walker is underrated. This kid has a good frame and he is very tough. He can shoot the lights out and dunk it very good. That's all i can say about him for now.

Good find VanK... so, how'd you not play against Walker?

Wed Jul 27, 2005 12:58 pm

Interesting. Walker didn't play in the tournament we played against their team. Maybe injury. Also, a lot of times in more minor tournaments like the one our two teams were in, some of the top players don't play because of the grueling schedule of AAU tournies.

That would explain why I started against Mayo

XChitwnBallaX12: Yeah, the dude who plays with Mayo?
IndyPacers67: Yeah, I feel pretty dumb because I said I'd never played against him, but that I'd played against Mayo, then they told me Mayo and Walker are on the same team. Any idea why Walker didn't play?
XChitwnBallaX12: You're kidding right?

IndyPacers67: Shut up
XChitwnBallaX12: They both didn't come in until the second and neither of them played more then a few minutes
IndyPacers67: Really? I remember playing Mayo for longer then that
XChitwnBallaX12: You were never on the court at the same time as OJ
IndyPacers67: Bullshit yes I waas
XChitwnBallaX12: Nope, you came out during the same timeout that he came in
IndyPacers67: Really?? Fuck

XChitwnBallaX12: I dunno dawg don't ask me
IndyPacers67: Who was the dude from Ohio that hit that 4 point play on Jason?
XChitwnBallaX12: Hahahaha Cook man
IndyPacers67: Cook?
XChitwnBallaX12: Yeah Daequan Cook or something liek that.
IndyPacers67: I don't remember that name...
XChitwnBallaX12: Yeah, he's a year younger
IndyPacers67: Was that game in New York or Philly?
XChitwnBallaX12: I can't remember
XChitwnBallaX12: Lemme ask Jason :)
IndyPacers67: Ok haha
XChitwnBallaX12: He blocked me once I asked haha

I'm a guard. For high school I start at SG and I get some minutes at PG.

For AAU I mostly ride the bench. If we play in a weekend tournament, lets say... 8 games. I may get in 3 of them and play a total of 15 minutes or so.

But I do get an up close look at some of the top NBA prospects which is cool. (Y)

Greg Oden is pretty good from what I've read.

I can't really contribute to the thread, cause my HS Basketball knowledge is so small, so I'll just say he always looks sad in photos. I've seen like 5 different pictures of him off-court, and he is always :(

Fuck, I'm rusty, just look at that post...

The Nba will be in need of big men and Gret Oden could fill that spot. Could he do it?

I wanna see another era of Patrick Ewing vs David Robinson vs Hakeem Olajuwon and so on. The Nba in few years will really really be lacking big men.
