A team source said the Nets and Blazers agreed in principle to a sign-and-trade that will get them Shareef Abdur-Rahim on a six-year contract worth roughly $38 million.
In return, the Nets will send a lottery protected 2006 first-round pick to the Blazers.
Abdur-Rahim might be coming at less than half the price of Martin, but he isn't half the player. Abdur-Rahim, who is 28, has averaged 19 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game for his career. Last season he struggled through injuries, but still managed 16.8 ppg and 7.1 rpg. Martin has averaged 12.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg for his career and had 15.5 ppg and 7.3 rpg for the Nuggets last season.

Yeap, Nets will be stronger than last season with the addition of Rahim.

They already gave 2-3 mil to Uncle Cliffy.

Pretty much a steal for the Nets, though the Blazers are at least getting something in return, in the era of the sign-and-trade.

Besides the Blazers players being on crack, it seems as if though their fans too have been caught up in the addiction.
Strange deal, the Blazers could have tried sending Shareef to the Knicks and got Jamal Crawford in my opinion.

I like the news. Nets will be TOP 4 in east.
Sat Jul 23, 2005 1:50 am
no,
in no order- Detroit, Miami, Indiana, Clevland, Chicago and maybe Boston they're still 7th or 8th best in the east.

Blazers don't have any rights to SAR, he's a FA.
SAR wanted to join a winning team, and was willing to go way under his market value to do so. In that case, the Blazers have no control over where he goes, he can just say he'll play for MLE (which he did), or even say he'll play for league minimum if he really wanted.
It's not really any different than Alonzo w/ the Raptors. If the player doesn't care that he'll lose money, there's no leverage any team has over him.

You really think Boston and Chicago are better than this potential Nets team?

The Nets have four All-Star caliber players, all at or near the prime of their careers.
They're better than they've ever been...

No way will the Cavs, Bulls, and Celts be better than this team.
Nets made the Playoffs over the Cavs with JKidd and VC. Add RJ and SAR and they're better than a team adding Larry Hughes..
Bulls haven't imrpoved at all in the off-season. Celts drafted good, but Green might not be ready for a couple of years.

It's a damn good team talent-wise, let's see how they gel. They should mix well, VC was a gift from heaven because he's one of the few elite level scorers that prefers to have to have a PG feed him versus handling it himself. I haven't seen SAR play much, Portland and Vancouver just didn't get too many national games =P
I do have to debate these guys being in their prime apart from RJ. Statistically SAR, VC, and Kidd are not enjoying their best years. VC may see a resurgence, he's still young and playing in a totally different system.
Kidd is definitely past his prime, although a below-prime Kidd is still better than most of the League. In his best Phoenix year he was 16.9 ppg 10.8 apg 2.28 spg, shooting 44%, that was in 1998 and he's been slowing down ever since.
Last year he notched a respectable 14.4 ppg 8.3 apg 1.86 spg. Great #s, but still he's clearly slowing down.

Yea, At least the Nets are always on the giving end of steals, a.l.a. Kenyon Martin.

I don't agree that signing of Martin was a steal for Nuggets. They overpaid a player with limited potential and a history of bad injures. Nets are better off without him.

Not true at all, without Martin, Nets fail to reach to the East finals as well as the NBA Finals. Just last season, out of the 1st round.

If they didn't let Martin leave for draft picks, they wouldn't get Carter and/or Rahim, guys who make them a better team then they were ever before. I think we all agree that Martin&Kittles<Rahim&Carter. I just hope that they find a decent 18 mpg backup for Kidd.
Sat Jul 23, 2005 8:55 pm
What about Zoran Planninic and Jacque Vaughn?

That was also without Kerry Kittles, Lucious Harris and Rodney Rogers, all key players for the Nets.

Zoran Planinic has yet to prove himself and Jacque Vaughn is not a decent 15 mpg replacement for Kidd.
I think the best choices are Damon Stoudemire and Juan Dixon, either one would be a good back-up for Kidd, something they have not had in a long time.
Sun Jul 24, 2005 10:19 am
planinic will most likely play behind antoine wright, with wright taking most of the load as backup SG/SF and zoran just papering over the cracks
apparently nets are now targeting milt palacio as backup PG
to me that says they're looking to squeeze a few more FA's into the roster.. rather than going for a higher calibre PG like mighty mouse who would want pretty much all the remaining MLE.. I've heard speculation that they're going after tractor traylor to add more size.. which I'm all for.. although I think we really need some 3pt shooting off the bench.. would love Jon Barry
