Riley or Van Gundy?

I think Pat would be the better coach, but I hope they stick with Van Gundy. I hate the way teams are so disloyal to coaches these days, if they go on a 5 loss streak the players cop no heat but the coach finds himself unemployed.

The coach will show the same disloyalty to players. If a rookie struggles or a role player struggles, they will be on the bench. Its a cold world in the NBA, and Riley has to do what is best for the heat. I hope he comes back, but at the same time I hope Van Gundy gets a job somewhere else... Maybe Detroit if brown leaves? Imagine that :crazy:

And its the GM's and Owner's job to get the best coach available. Pat Riley is a better coach than Van Gundy.

This is what happens, when a great coach becomes a executive of a team . Everyone wants him to coach the team instead of being the executive. It happened with Isiah Thomas and the Knicks and now with the heat and Riley. Well anyway they just said in Sportscenter that Pat Riley WILL NOT COACH the heat next season.

Van Gundy is a good coach, and it'd be unfair for Gundy since he's closer to his first NBA championship. I think it's more of Riley's ego in the way.

Pat Riley hasn't coachin a good team for a long time i suppose..
That's why he wanna come back n coach the team..
he might not have this kind of opportunity anymore.. after Shaq retires..

i reckon stan van gundys done a great job in 2 yrs, in a large way i hope they don't chuck him as coach but i do respect pat too its a tough choice to choose on which coach to use.

In my opinion Pat Riley is still perfectly capable of being a successful coach in the NBA. Van Gundy has done a great job the last couple of seasons though, it would be a shame to see him ousted so soon.

It also happened with Don Nelson and the Mavericks back in 1997. I remember when it was first announced he'd taken the GM job in Dallas. At the press conference he said something along the lines of "This means I'm putting coaching out of mind, and focusing on being the general manager". Within a year, Jim Cleamons was gone and Nellie was back on the sidelines. For anyone else who was around at that time and remembers the whole situation, who would have thought all the moves the Mavs made in the 1997 season would pay off? It really seemed like Nellie had set the team back for at least another decade.

Yes. Watched some ESPN stuff on the net, Van Gundy would be 5th on a list of coaches who don't get their job back after a high win count. The ranking is according to how many wins they accumalated in tyhe season prior not returning... I didn't explain it too well but Riley is first after elading LA to 63 wins (?) in 89-90 before not returning and Van Gundy is 5th with 59 wins last season if he is to be outsed by the team president.

Anyways, I would like Van Gundy staying put and see what he can do in this season. Don't you think its a bit cheap for Riley to just barge in and take over?

BTW, would it be possible to have Co-coaches?

Yes, thats true, but why do coaches do so? Since they will get fired if their team loses, it's in their best interest to bench players who are struggling so the team doesn't lose, hence they won't get fired.

I'm not saying they shouldn't. But for some reason when something similar happens to a coach, do gooders around the world unite in the coaches corner.

It's a pretty funny cycle when you think about it... players don't perform, coach gets fired... coach benches player for not performing, player is disrespected... coach gets the blame for players not performing, GM fires coach. Awell, I'm happy being an arm-chair GM.
