Bust of the Draft?

Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:24 pm

So, which GM will be the laughing stock in a few years from now?

I vote Bynum to LA at the 10the spot. I don't think the Lakers' franchise has the patience and experience to develop a project like him, especially concerning his 17 years of age and alleged immaturity. Plus, there are no decent big men palying in LA right now who can tutor him. I see 'BUST' written all over lil' Andrew and soon-to-be-oblivion by Lakers' fans...

Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:28 pm

Well I don't really consider them busts. I think Villanueva was the "bad pick or the draft", but he can be a pretty good player.

Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:32 pm

Villanueva will be in a bad position that could very well seal his fate as a bust - at least in terms of being the wrong pick. For now I'll pick him but Bynum's not a bad choice either.

Bogut at 1

Glad to see the poll caters for ESPN analysts. ;)

Well, i certainlydon't agree but if one draftee each year has the word 'bust' chasing all over him, that's the no. 1 pick...

Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:36 pm

Which is fair enough I suppose. It's not as though first overall picks haven't had disappointing careers. In fact, thinking back on some of the previous #1 picks there's quite a few who have been outshined by the players taken after them.

Bynum at 10

Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:40 pm

I personally, having seen Bogie play in Athens, think he'll be a solid, if unspectacular pro Center. I think numbers in the vicinity of 15ppg - 9rpg - 4apg will be more or less his career averages, which will mean quite afew All-Star appearaces considering the recent and future-predicted to continue Center drought.

Bynum (N)

Im starting to warm up to Jason Maxiel but hes just so damn small 6-6 defensive PF? Hes sorta a mini Ben Wallace but hes so undersized and hes got an ok post up game. But Bynum wont play under phil at all and hell be a bust.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 1:11 am

Someone pointed out that take out Ben Wallace's fro and he'd probably be around 6'7, so it's only an inch difference. Maxiel was a great pick I thought.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 1:20 am

I believe Bynum will play this year. He wouldn't have been drafted without Phil's allowance and therefor it would be pure stupidity (Mitch's and Phil's) if he got stucked on the bench.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 4:02 am

I'm saying McCants. The guy's barely 6'3" at most, which is fine in college ball, but in the NBA, it just won't work. He plays bigger than he is -- unlike Wade who has the ability to play both the one and two-spots.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 4:19 am

Charlie V is definitely the hot topic, but he's obviously a project pick. It's a gamble...we just don't know.

But we DO know how Felton plays, he's not a gamble, he doesn't have a huge upside, and he's 6' 0". He's gonna give up significant height to the smallest guys in the NBA: Parker 6' 2" Nash 6' 3" Hinrich 6' 3", and these are the small guys. People point out how Nash at 6' 3" with his quickness is a huge defensive liability, i can't imagine what they'll say about Felton.

What's he gonna do against the Kidds and Livingstons? They're gonna shoot over him like he's not there. Deron Williams stacking 2 fouls on him in the first 5 minutes of the title game is peanuts compared to what Baron Davis will do to him.

I smell nothing but a marketing pick, which is a real shame for a #5 pick. They could have grabbed him with any # of lower picks and still gotten a lot of great players.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 4:41 am

Korolev all the way.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:01 am

I'm saying McCants. The guy's barely 6'3" at most

Measured at 6' 4" with shoes, which is not much, but he's not short for the position either. Think Tony Allen...

Korolev all the way.

We'll need 2 or 3 years to make a safe assumption on that one... :|

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:24 am

Well they should wait 2 or 3 years to draft him then. He's too young to be drafted.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:33 am

Well they should wait 2 or 3 years to draft him then. He's too young to be drafted.

The same reason Toronto didn't wait 2-3 years to draft T-Mac, and Minnesota to draft KG. If he's up for grabs when you're picking, and you love his potential, you cannot possibly risk someone else to draft him the next year...

Not to mention that you can only declare and be eligible for the draft once... unless you're a HS kid with no agent and get drafted in the second round, which means you can still go to college.

Thu Jun 30, 2005 8:49 am

other...

deron williams. the guy was great in his days suiting up for the fighting illini though he wasn't even the best player or most talented player on the team. add to the fact that deron williams wasn't significantly better then chris paul or felton, yet utah gave up 3 first round draft picks to move up a few spots to select him

if deron doesn't become one of the top pg's at least in west, he'd have to be considered a bust

i can't think off the top of my head of another team that did the same thing that utah did.

i hope he succeeds....

Thu Jun 30, 2005 9:47 am

]The thing with Deron is, he is not an explosive , quick-foote dPG than can create his own shot or drive it all th eway to the basket like Chris Paul. He is a worker, plays fantactic defense on th eperimeter and makes his teammates better. To do that, he needs teammates with skill. More of those found in Utah rather than in New Orleans... so, teh Jazz is one of the best fits for him, excluding a contender team...

Thu Jun 30, 2005 9:59 am

again..

utah gave up 3 first round draft picks to move up a few spots to select him. it's not like chris paul or felton can't work hard, play defense, or play the pick and roll. and utah wouldn't have to give up 3 first round draft picks to land one of those

We're talking Jerry Sloan here. He likes his players tailor-made, and if he said he wanted Deron, I trust his judgement. He's the Bill Bellicick(sp?) of the NBA, barring the rings. :P

Bingo!

Thu Jun 30, 2005 6:13 pm

I dont get it!
Lakers could of taken Jarret Jack, they had him, yet they chose some 17 year old who writes like a 12 year old little girl on the internet!
WTF?!?

I mean if this is Lakers pick, the only thing i can think of is that they have a trade in the works or Phil is serious about playing Butler at pg, and letting Kobe n Odom do all the Ball-Handling.
I almost threw up when the pick was announced though, i barely had even heard of the guy lol, and then i saw the clips on him and he just looked so lazy and slow, i mean i thought Diop was slow..............but wow! this guy takes the cake at the moment, literally :P

I really hope this guy does something, For the sake of Mitch's n Phils job :?

I guess he did say hes happy to have the chance to play alongside Kobe and with Phil, ill laugh histerically if theres a report that Kobe calls him a flamming faggot at one stage during a practice session :P

Thu Jun 30, 2005 6:28 pm

Alright, i'm the crazy one who picked bogut :o

Thu Jun 30, 2005 7:35 pm

Im pretty high on Bynum, he'll prove all of you wrong... As for bust of the draft, its Deron at 3 (N)
