Crazy NBA Awards 2004-2005

Sat Jun 11, 2005 12:39 pm

This is a little late, but I got the idea from a Chilean site and I decided to translate it here! Props to ToRo_NBA!

Since we are entering the finals, and the regular season awards have been given, it's time for the other awards. The bizarre Crazy Awards, which are given to the exact opposite of the winners of the regular awards. :P

Less Valuable Player (LVP): Knowing that the MVP is the player that makes his team better when he is ON-court, rather than OFF-court, this award goes to a player that during the season made his team much better with him... sitting at home watching the game.
CANDIDATE: Chris Webber (SAC/PHI): Individually he excelled, but colectively something was wrong when he played, in Philly and in Sacramento. After his trade, the Kings kept their win/loss record. And when he came to the Sixers, they got positive records when playing WITHOUT Chris...

Worst Rookie Of The Year (WROY): This is for any rookie that hasn't lived up to the hype of the 2004 Draft, or anyone who's bound to leave the L soon enough.
CANDIDATE: JR Smith (NO): Just hops, hops and more hops. He doesn't play D, he doesn't drive the ball, and he didn't stand out in any individual stat in a shitty team like the Hornets this season. He can improve, a lot, but right now he's nowhere near other rookies such as Emeka or Ben.

Worst Defensive Player Of The Year (WDPOY): Player that this season was just offense, and little or nothing defense. His forehead faced the rim much more than his back did.
CANDIDATE: Carmelo Anthony (DEN): If it wasn't for George Karl's arrival, we would not have seen ANY defense by Melo. For a starting SF, 6'8" in height, in a Playoff team like the Nuggets, an average of less than a block and less than a steal is VERY unsatisfying. The new Glenn Robinson?

Worst Coach Of The Year (WCOY): Coach that didn't seem to do anything decent with a supposedly good team in his hands. Maybe the season was bad because of the players, but when you loose, it's always the coach's fault...?
CANDIDATE: Lenny Wilkens (NYK): Mucho old school ball for such a young team, don't you think? He should have thrown the towel a while ago, considering he's the winningest coach in the NBA... but also has a record for "most games lost".
Other candidates were his succesor Herb Williams, that made the Knicks even WORST (how could that be possible?), Byron Scott (the West was much better for him) and Flip Saunders (plain bad luck).

NBA 12th Man Award: For that special player whose always present... on the bench. That player that only rises from his chair to congratulate his teammates or wave a Gatorade towel in the air. That player who never, ever sweats, unless he's had an excruciating... team practice.
CANDIDATE: Darko Milicic (DET): For coach Brown, the dyed Euro is forgotten somewhere in a deep and hidden part of his memory. Nonetheless, for a strange reason, everytime he gazes at the bench, Darko is always there in the bench, waiting for his turn to go in. He conforms by giving his seat to his teammates at timeout, and he's acustomed to having his hands grabbing a towel more than the rock. He's got talent... but not near Larry Brown.

Least Improved Player (LIP): This award goes to that guy we don't have any more patience with. You cannot expect anything from him. He's advancing... backwards.
CANDIDATE: Michael Olowokandi (MIN): He's hopeless. Zero contribution, zero devotion, zero everything. He was fucking #1 overall pick, I can't imagine how...

Well, that would be it.
What would you change? What other categories would you put?
Any feedback appreciated! (Y)

LOL I like the idea of this, I'm just too lazy to fill it out. But nice idea (Y)

Olowokandi showed flashes of his talent when McHale took over, but consistency is a word he has yet to comprehend.

Less Valuable Player (LVP):

I agree, C-Webb... The chemistry between him and AI just isn't there...yet.

Worst Rookie Of The Year (WROY):

Rafael Araujo by far. Big, fat, slow, and old, an embarassment for the number 8 picks of the past... let's hope he improves with time...

Worst Defensive Player Of The Year (WDPOY):

Jason Kapono.... He must be one of the worst defenders even, he couln't even guard Magic Jounson... as Magic is right now...

Worst Coach Of The Year (WCOY):

Rudy Tomjanovich... couldn't control Kobe despite his impressive resumee, pressure got the better of him and he just called it quits midway through...

NBA 12th Man Award:

Paul Shirley... Wouldn't get off the bench even if there was a serious case of mass food poisoning among the Suns players, but a comedic artisan and funny guy to boot...

Least Improved Player (LIP):

Zach Randolph and Darius Miles - tied. Both got their big fat paychecks and subsequantly decided to take some plays off and rest... poor Blazers, stuck with their contracts... In general, the whole Portland squad aside from Pryzibilla and Telfair gats this award...

Sat Jun 11, 2005 6:48 pm

Jason Kapono.... He must be one of the worst defenders even, he couln't even guard Magic Jounson... as Magic is right now...

Kapono is a rising star, his defense isn't terrible. His problem is that he's not aggressive enough on defense. Mark my word people! Watch for Kapono in the years to come!

definitely agree with all your selections.. good call

however if vince carter was able to non-pussify himself after getting traded to the nets i'm pretty sure c-webb can

I think he has health problems too, which led him to retirement from Houston. I'm sure Kobe had something to do with it, but I don't think Rudy was healthy enough to handle an 82 game season.

That is a possibility, but his health problems might just be a smoke screen so that his career and ability woould not be tarnished by the label "poor under pressure"...

:D    non-pussify himself haha that is really a nice one. I guess c-webb is too old too really get into that non-pussification-thingy right now.

Agreed. Like Darko last year he's a project so perhaps it's a little unfair to give him this award, but JR Smith actually showed a little potential and his numbers as a starter weren't too bad. I think this award is better suited to a lottery pick that essentially did nothing.

Sun Jun 12, 2005 4:11 pm

He's pretty bloody old for a project

He's pretty bloody old for a project

Indeed... 25 years old in your sophomore season doesn't give much room for improvement...

Less Valuable Player (LVP): I think I will agree with Webber.

Worst Rookie Of The Year (WROY): J.R. doesn't deserve it. He's still a highschooler and he actually has some range on his jumper and he's still got plenty of time to work out his defense. Araujo hands down though. 24 years old, 8th overall pick, picks up two fouls in less than two minutes, but most of it has to do with Rob Babcock. What a silly GM.

Worst Defensive Player Of The Year (WDPOY): Too many to name.

Worst Coach Of The Year (WCOY): I disagree that Scott is a bad coach. He's capable of being a good coach and he helped bring New Jersey to the finals a couple of times. Herb Williams was just thrusted into the head coaching job without any experience so I can't really blame him. Flip Saunders is a fantastic coach, I don't know why he's there. I guess Lenny Wilkins is probably the most worthy of this award, and I can't really think of anyone deserving this award right now.

NBA 12th Man Award: Mark Pope. Has been the 12th man and always will be.

Least Improved Player (LIP): Amen to Olowokandi. He isn't worth anyone's time.

Ya all forgot on an honorable mention on the Less Valuable Player to Kwane Brown.

I was thinking of the same thing. He also comes to mind for the LIP, considering a lot of people had high expectations.

Tue Jun 14, 2005 2:39 pm

less valuable player is PEJA, not webber. predrag bitched and moaned about divac leaving and was crap during the season.

wroy: kirk snyder. had some impressive workouts and a good summer. came off very cocky and earned himself a spot in sloan's doghouse. (N)

Worst Coach Of The Year: sorry , rudy T, i agree with the others and give it to him. the not healthy enough argument is garbage. if he wasn't fit enough to coach, then the lakers management would have never given him that multi year high paying contract

Worst Defensive Player Of The Year (WDPOY): zach randolph. must be allergic to it or something

NBA 12th Man Award: darko all the way

Least Improved Player (LIP): tough call. carmelo anthony

now for the disputes:

asdf: mark pope is more a practice player. he latches on with teams but seldom makes the active roster ;)

dweaver: randolph was pretty much injured for the year, hindering his development. but miles has been a stinker his whole career heeh

madhandle: wang zhi zhi played some. he even hit some big shots against the bulls hehe

Tue Jun 14, 2005 4:53 pm

Best Punch: J. O'Neal and Ron Artest knocking the living shit out of the fat guy.
