THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. INDIANA PACERS
QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS:
1ST QTR
Golden State made an amazing start to this game, playing excellent defense and keeping the Pacers scoreless in the first 4 minutes, leading 7 – 0 up until then. At that time though, Reggie Miller became hot from the field and lanky forward Jonathan Bender contributed well off the bench, resulting in Indiana evening up the contest . Golden State was being led by an inspiring Troy Murphy who finished the quarter with 8 pts and 8rebs. First quarter score: 24 – 25.
Rodney White came off the bench and solidified the Warriors' inside play during the first quarter...
2ND QTR
Recently acquired forward Rodney White scored the home team’s first 6 points in the second quarter, and with the scoring aid of Vlade Divac and Luke Walton helped the team take the lead 34 – 32 , with 8:07 to go until the half. Jason Richardson then woke up offensively with a perfectly timed scoring spree while Murphy was bringing down the boards non-stop, thus the Warriors led the game 42 – 34 and it was mainly because of Ron Artest’s offensive efforts that the Pacers managed to close the gap at halftime, 47 – 42.
The Pacers' effective inside game to close the quarter helped minimize the gap at the buzzer...
3RD QTR
Reggie Miller’s outside shooting proved to be a deciding factor at the beginning of the game’s second half, as the veteran shooting guard’s scoring lifted the Pacers into taking the lead, 55 – 59 with 4:26 to go. Ron Artest would supplement offensively and defensively, while all Golden State had to show in the third period was Rodney White’s hustle and inside scoring. As a result, the tide turned towards Indiana, with the away team leading in the end 64 – 72.
Murphy's stellar rebounding was not enough to help the Warriors maintain the lead going into the fina quarter...
4TH QTR
It was all Indiana pacers in the final quarter of this basketball game. Artest kept up the pressure on defence, Miller went on scoring, and to top it all, Jermaine O’Neal had a fantastic strerch after being all but disappeared in the first 36 minutes. Jonathan Bender would prove extremely effective playing at center, while on the other hand, Jason Richardson was probably having his worst scoring night of the season so far , stuck at 11 points. Troy Murphy’s heroics beneath the basket would not prove enough to handle Golden State a home victory, so the Pacers won this one 85 – 98.
Reggie Miller's long bombs at the end terminated all Golden State resistance and handed the Pacers a road victory...

1ST QTR
Jason Richardson started out the contest being hot from downtown, hitting two 3s and helping his team lead 8 – 5, but the answer was imminent as Paul Pierce scored 7 consecutive points, all from mid and long range to bring the Celts on top, 10 – 15 with 5:34 to go. Troy Murphy took the mantle on offence for Golden State, while bench men Luke Walton and Elden Campbell solidified their presence in the paint, thus evening up the score, 22 – 22 at the end of the first.
Troy Murphy was the one who led the charge early for the Warriors...
2ND QTR
Veteran Celtics point guard Gary Payton took it on himself to score a 0 – 6 run for his team at the beginning of the period, making it 22 – 28 in a moment’s notice. From then on and up until mid-quarter, Boston dominated the game tempo, setting up fast breaks one after the other and baffling the Warriors on defence. The score with 5: 50 to go had become 30 – 40, mostly due to Paul Pierce and GP’s outside shooting, combined with Raef LaFrentz’ effort at rebounding the basketball. The next 3 minutes were a Golden State rampage though, as the score became 44 – 44 in a flash, with Divac being stellar in the paint, and Mike Dunleavy shooting with purpose. The half-time ended balanced, 49 – 51 for the Celtics.
Jason Richardson's scoring would open up spaces and opportunities for his teammates to create their own chances...
3RD QTR
The game went toe-to-toe for the most part after half-time, with the Warriors being led offensively by Luke Walton’s scoring and Troy Murphy’s inspired passing off the triangle, and Boston finding answers in Pierce and LaFrentz as usual. Those two players helped the visitors make a small 0 – 5 run in the end of the quarter to have it end 76 – 81 for the Celts.
Paul Pierce's shooting not only kept Boston in the game but also gave his team the lead at the end of the third...
4TH QTR
The contest continued on its toe-to-toe status, with some new faces taking their place under the spotlight during the final period. Rodney White came off the bence and assumed the PF position with authority, grabbing 7 rebounds in 6 minutes and dominating the paint despite his lack of size. The usual suspects continued scoring for both teams, and especially Richardson was in the zone during the game’s final stretches. Near the end, with the score 102 – 99 for the Warriors and with the clock winding down, Luke Walton hit a critical buzzer beating 20 footer to make it 104 – 99 with a minute to go, thus causing a free throw contest to end the game. The Warriors’ players who took trips to the lane kept their cool and handed Golden State a much needed home victory, 110 – 106.

THE GAME: PHOENIX SUNS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
It started out as an uneven contest on paper and that’s exactly what this game turned out to be. Amare Stoudemire dominated early with Quentin Richardson backing him up offensively from the perimeter, while Golden State did not get any help from Jason Richardson in the scoring department. Only Troy Murphy was trying to keep up with the Suns’ frenetic game pace. Shaun Marion picked up the mantle on offence in the second quarter finishing the half with 10pts, 4rebs and 5steals. J-Rich woke up near the end of the half, but his 7 points were not enough to cut down the lead. Half-Time Score: 55 – 46
Shawn Marion's all-around first half performance kept the Suns on top midway through the game...
Golden State started off the second half very strongly and led by the usual suspects Richardson and Murphy, actually managed to take the lead momentarily, 59 – 60 4 minutes into the third quarter. At that exact time Stoudemire and Marion assumed control of the paint once more for the Suns, giving the home team back the lead. Steve Nash’s passing was crucial and effective, while the Warriors’ bench was not providing much help. In the 4th quarter, Phoenix led by Nash maintained a steady advantage over their opponents, never looking back and cruising to another home victory… Final Score: 108 – 97

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. ORLANDO MAGIC
Grant Hill and Troy Murphy started the game with quite a bit of flair and led their respective sides both on offence and defence. The player making the difference for the Warriors in the first quarter was Luke Walton coming off the bench midway through and scoring 6 points in concession to give the home team the lead 27 – 22. In the second quarter it was Vlade Divac’ turn to take the reigns underneath the basket, racking up 9 points and 8 rebounds to close the half. Golden State found themselves leading 46 – 33 with 2:50 to go for the half, but an amazing Orlando 0 –11 run spearheaded by Doug Christie’s steals, Kelvin Cato’s scoring and Pat Garrity’s rebounding, ended the half just 46 – 44 for the Warriors.
Kelvin Cato dominated teh paint and helped Orlando's run to end the half just 2 points behind their opponents...
Jason Richardson was nowhere to be found on offense for the Californians in the fist half, and he continued to pull his disappearing act during the early stretches of the second. Dwight Howard was battling it out in the paint with Divac, Walton and Rodney White, who took turns in being dominated by the exciting 19 year-old rookie. It was only Divac and Walton’s offensive contribution that helped the Warriors retain the lead going into the 4th quarter. In the final period of the contest, J-Rich was still absent from the scoring board with just a few flashes, while only Speedy Claxton seemed to show the necessary passion to overcome Magic’s resistance. As a result, Francis’ and Howards’ offensive effort went unopposed, giving Orlando an 11 point lead with 5 minutes to go, a lead that went untouched up until the end. The Magic won this one 89 – 99.

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
Veteran SG Steve Smith was remembering his old stardom days it seems, as he opened up the game shooting from all over the place and giving the Cats an 2 – 9 early lead. A good defensive effort and Luke Walton scoring off the bench for the Warriors evened up the game a short while after, while Jason Richardson’s offensive explosion to end the quarter gave them the 25 – 23 lead after 12. Emeka Okafor, the prolific rookie out of UConn, took the visitors under his wing on both ends of the floor, scored 18pts until the half and was grabbing the offensive boards like peanuts in the air. With J-Rich fairly silent in the second quarter, the score at halftime was 40 – 43 for the Bobcats.

The second half began with a lot of offence and a little defence from both teams. In addition, Troy Murphy came out of his 40 minute slumber and contributed crucial baskets, while Okafor was still battling it out on his own underneath both baskets. As they say, one man is never enough, and the Warriors clinched this one easier than the final score dictates, 100 – 97.
J-Rich showed off his legitimate 3 point range in the second half, finishing the game with 4 made long bombs in his 7 attempts...

THE GAME: DALLAS MAVERICKS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
Jason Richardson started out strong and scored his teams’ first 5 points of the game, but he was all alone on offence, thus Dallas found no difficulty to start off nicely, 5 – 9. Michael Finley was leading Dallas on offence, while Vlade Divac was his counterpart for the Warriors. Nice shot selection and adequate defence helped the visitors close out the first quarter leading 22 – 24. In the beginning of the second quarter, the Warriors found themselves completely gagged on offence, and at the same time Dallas was making hard baskets near the end of their 24. It didn’t take long for the game to even up once more, though, as Jason Richardson’s 5 assists and Dirk Nowitzki’s rebounding kept both defences honest up until the half time buzzer. A last 2 minute surge by the German gave the Mavs a small lead at the end of the second, 45 – 41.
J-Rich carried the Warriors on his back during the early parts of the game and managed to keep the score close as a result...
Nowitzki ended the first half being on fire, and that’s exactly how he started off on the second. Dirk was scoring seemingly without effort both from inside and outside, having no problem being marked by Murphy and Divac, who had trouble keeping up with his mobility outside the paint. This resulted in a quick 10 point lead for Dallas, 53 – 43 just after 2 minutes of play, with Golden State looking hapless on defence. This exact lead was sustained up until the end of the third quarter, with Finley picking up the leadership role for the Mavs, and Jason Richardson doing the exact same thing for the Oaklanders, the score being 72 – 62. In the 4th and final quarter of the contest, 3 consecutive made 3 pointers by surging Michael Finley gave Dallas a huge actual and psychological lead going into the final stretches of the game. For the remainder of regulation, Golden State seemed to lose hope for victory and surrender to the home team’s infallible perimeter shooting. It was inevitable that Dallas would in the end coast to another well-deserved home victory with a score of 104 – 84.
Finley's sniper efficiency to open the fourth quarter proved crucial for the game's final outcome...

THE GAME: NEW ORLEANS HORNETS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
The game started off slowly, with controlled tempo as both teams seemed hesitant taking chances in running the break after turnovers or rebounds. Baron Davis for the Hornets and Troy Murphy for the Warriors were the main threats to the baskets, while good defence was being played and scoring chances became increasingly scarce. The first quarter ended 18 – 17, with the only player coming off the bench and making his presence noticed being veteran Elden Campbell who dominated the defensive boards for Golden State. In the second quarter, things immediately appeared to heat up, with fast breaks and lots of good perimeter shots by both teams. Jamal Mashburn went on a 2 minute scoring rampage putting up 8 points in that period, while on the other hand Troy Murphy was still leading his team offensively, with 11 points to end thehalf. A 9 – 0 run for the Hornets inspired by Baron Davis made the score 41 – 30 at a point, but the Warriors surged right back and managed to close the half at the buzzer, 46 – 39.

The second half of the contest started out with the Warriors performing surprisingly and uncharacteristically well at the defensive end. In the third quarter they only allowed 12 points for their opponents, at the same time being efficient on offence, both from inside and outside. Jason Richardson was clearly having an off night, thus taking limited number of sorts, but his scoring gap was adequately filled by newly acquired backup PG J.R. Bremer. The 6’ 2” Ohio native was sniping from a distance AND driving in the basket with purpose. As a result, the quarter ended 58 – 64, with the momentum clearly in Golden State’s favour. The final quarter saw things getting even, as New Orleans center Jamal Magloire found his rhuthm on offence and started to score non-stop from the paint, with most of his points being the result of offensive rebounding. It was a toe-to-toe contest up until 4 minuted till the end, when all of a sudden J-Rich woke up from his slumber and scored consecutive baskets to give the Warriors an 71 – 77 lead. The Hornets came right back with Davis’ help, so the last minute of the game turned into a thriller.
With the score 77 – 79 and 39.2 seconds to go, sharpshooter Casey Jacobsen hit an uncontested 3 to make it 80 – 79.
- Warriors ball, the rock finds its way to Troy Murphy in the key, he misses a contested lay-up but grabs the board and slams it home to make it 80 – 81.
- 15 seconds before the end, and Baron Davis risks an alley oop pas…. P.J. Brown catches it floating mid-air and slams it with power, 82 – 81 and the crowd erupts.
- 10 seconds, J-Rich steps on the line and gets called for out of bounds… all seems lost for the Warriors.
- Intentional foul to Jacobsen, makes both free throws. Score 84 – 81, with 7 seconds to go
- Golden State inbounds the ball, pass to Bremer, Richardson, he finds Jason Kapono, clock winding down, releases from 30 feet with P.J. Brown hanging all over him, shot arches incredibly… and ….

In overtime, the psychological factor was clearly in Golden State’s favour, and it showed from the tip-off. Especially Kapono who had just made the tying shot, was unstoppable from long range. 3 consecutive Warriors’ possessions, 3 consecutive J-Rich assists, 3 straight Kapono 3 pointers. That simple. From then on it was a breeze for the visitors, who never felt pressure again. Final Score: 95 – 103 for Golden
State.
