Another bloody Kiwi in the NBA

I was looking at boxscores on NBA.com, and spotted a K. Penney riding the bench for the Clippers. For those who don't know, Kirk Penney was probably New Zealands best player in the Olympics, and he's been decent for a few years now. He played 2 games for Miami last season where he ripped it up with 1.5ppg, now he's at the Clippers and after four games is averaging 0.5ppg. It's probably one of those short term things, he was signed by some NBDL team no one cares about.

yeah, us Kiwi superstars are taking over the game

Sean Marks, Kirk Penney.....who next? I thought Mark Dickel would have a shot after he led college in assists at UNLV a few years back.....how about Pero Cameron  actually Cameron is alright, he's like a 6'4" 270lb PF.....he's got some skills though, can pass, hit the outside shot, is strong, but he's slow as and couldn't jump over the yellow pages with a running jump......

ahh well....I will enjoy the NZ bball glory days while they last

Yeah we had a few threads here about Pero during the Olympics. One rumour going around was that the Pistons were looking at signing him... the fact that that's even rumoured while Matty Neilsen can't make the Denver roster disturbs me deeply.

It just shows how bad our league is down here... and how retarted our media is for not giving the nba the proper coverage while it shows the nbl... spastics..

If they kept the NBL to FTA and showed it regularly, I think that could generate enough interest amongst casual fans for them to subscribe to FOXTEL or whatever who could then show a decent 5 games a week NBA schedule. I mean the reason they don't have more NBA games is because they don't think it's that popular, and the reason it isn't popular is because basketball isn't being given the decent introduction into normal Australian society that it needs. Unlikel other sports.

yeah, I heard those rumours but I didn't believe them....I think Larry Brown was blowin' wind str8 outta his arse....yeh, I could just imagine big Pero trying shoot a J over Prince....

as for Matty Nielsen.....I actually thought he would make it, I really did.....from what I recall he was cleaning up summer league....a big step up from ryan bowen IMHO.....I guess it's all about right place, right time I guess.....1000s of players who can play in the big league but yeah....

at least Bogut is basically a lottery lock for 2005 Draft.....so there'll be at least one Aussie in the League.....who knows, maybe that Luke Schenscherkockaris (you know, ginger ninja) can stick at the bottom of someone's roster.....unsure about that one though, but ya never know....

I couldn't agree with you more there man....I actually didn't realise how many people were still into bball in Oz till I got on Net....geez, I'm only seen a couple of games & feeble Sports Tonights highlights (although they have died down significantly) in the last 2 years due to not having Foxtel or Optus or whatever....back in NZ when I had Digital I'd be watching about 4-5 games a week (2 NBA and 2-3 College games).....

makes me :x

Bogut would be a nice pick for the Hornets, IMO. PJ Brown is on his way out. And Chris Andersen isn't ever going to be a starter. Bogut (Or jerkface as i remember him from year 9) would make a great inside tandem with Jamaal Magloire.

Even though the Hornets would have a top 4 pick and I don't think he'd go that high. Philadelphia @ about 10-14 seems more likely.

Let's hope his stock rises though.

I read at DraftCity that he's come back this season looking really muscular, and is playing brilliantly. Maybe he realized chicks dig muscles or something.

Yeah, up til year 10. Professional athlete is the perfect career for him. He'll be the sort of player who whinges about shots, but not publicly. At least not for a few years.

Such is the state of Basketball in Australia, that very few people that i went to school with actually knew he was playing in the Olympics. I should try to find my Year 9 yearbook where i'm standing next to him in the class photo. He's only 2 inches taller than me then. About 6'1"

I'm not 6'9" now though.

After six years without many opportunities to see live games, a couple of games a week is a nice change for me. But you're right, the execs must underestimate our interest in basketball while presuming there's a lot of NFL fans in Australia (I'm sure there are, but I feel safe in saying NBA fans outnumber them). Or fans of the 2004 World Poker Tour or ISU Skating, for example...

I'd like to know why the 2004 Junior World Snooker Championships got like 5 days of continuous coverage on ABC or SBS or one of those, but we can't even get an NBL highlights program on FTA anymore.

Because TV execs don't listen to what people want, they tell them what they want. One of the higher ups at Channel Ten (I forget his name now) said a few months ago that Australians want more and more reality TV...which I guess explains the declining ratings for reality shows across the networks.

:o Come on, World Poker Tour goes off....my mate is a fanatic on it, hates to miss any episodes so he tapes it so he can come out and hit the

whilst I've only seen it a couple of times, I enjoy the strategy, especially if you watching it after a few

but then again, I would gladly give up one of my mate's loves for some NBA (and college bball as it goes off) coverage

I'd give up any of my mates girlfriends just for some basketball coverage, it's reached desperation stakes.

The thing that bothers me the most, is that I find it a bit difficult sometimes to post in NBA Talk with any conviction because as I can't watch the bloody games I really don't know how certain players actually play, all my knowledge comes from boxscores and recaps... which blows (N)

yep, it's pretty bad like that....I've been living off internet bball sites for way too long.... I want to go back to the days of a couple of games NBA a week, a few college games, and my daily dose of Sportscenter

I agree with everything you say Jae

who has the rights to the NBL now?
Didnt ABC show some games before Fox took it over (and IMO Fox arnt giving it enough coverage)
cmon I would like 3 games on ESPN and 3 games on Fox sports is that too hard?

Yeah I think Ten originally had the rights, back in the glory days with Leon Trimmingham and such. Then ABC got them, and the WNBL... which it's kept, but somehow got out-bidded for the NBL rights (N)

It's a pretty shite situation.

Yeh because the NBL didn't have a major sponsor, so they needed the Pay tv money.
