Amare might be limited by his height. Dunks look a lot more impressive when a player can sail through the air a bit beforehand.

I'm disappointed that Fred Jones wasn't invited. Anyone who saw him in the NCAA Dunk Contest last year will know why. He's truly an athletic freak.

Also, with all the people talking about how we've seen all the possible dunks...that might be true. But we haven't even scratched the surface of what can be done when you have someone else to set you up or alley oop the ball to you. Just off the top of my head...

-Leap frog your teammate Vince Carter style and throw it down.

-Catch an alley oop thrown over the top of the backboard...

-Have your teammate throw you an alley oop from behind half court...

-Sit your teammate on the basket support (there's a beam that goes back there that I imagine a player could stand and support himself on rather comfortably) and have him drop the ball to you in mid-air...

etc etc...

I also expect to see Stephon Marbury setting up for Amare and Jason Kidd setting up for Richard Jefferson. Should be interesting...here's hoping Jefferson (and by proxy, the Nets franchise) triumphs.

Why is there only 4 competitors? Hopefully each player gets a few more dunks each. I'm going with Jason Richardson to defend his title, with Desmond Mason as runner up. Amare is a lot more about power than finesse, but he will be still fun to watch. Fred Jones definately should have been in there, but his lack of playing time might have had an impact on that. I would have also liked to see Ricky Davis and even Darius.

Looks like they're going with the winner's bracket setup again, something I hoped they would avoid. In trying something new for the competition every year, you get to a point where you come up with something that doesn't work, which is probably why they did away with the "routine" idea, and brought back a more traditional format in 2000 and 2001. Though some of the dunks in 2002 were nice, the new format didn't let the contest live up to its potential.

what are the rules for the dunk comp, the last one i read about which talked about the rules that each player gets 60 sec to do as many dunks as possible, but that was bak in 95, can some one tell me how it works now.

also i think players should strat using mini tramplines when dunking, so they can jusm over somehing big, i was thinking if some 1 would do a dunk over a high jump pole, it would even be better iun someone jumped with out a tramline??!!

Are you for real? Then you would probably start inviting mascots to the dunk comp. It is for players to show their natural leaping ability, not what they can do off a trampoline.

Last year they had two brackets, with two winners meeting in the finals. The first round consisted of three dunks, one dunk at a time. In the first round, one dunk must be with a teammate, one from the wheel (the wheel is spun, and whichever category it lands on, the player must imitate a classic dunk from that category) and one of their own choosing.

If my memory serves me correctly, the second round was just two dunks, one from the wheel and one of their own choosing.

What if they had a team dunk contest, where like 5 players are chosen for each team, and they had to create a routine. It could be choreographed, so it won't be just one dunk and done, it'll be a series of dunks. Each team could have four finishers and one set up man. If the set up man is a little guy who could dunk, a great finish would be one where he faked a pass and dunked it himself and surprising many people (besides, I love short dunkers). And of course, the team with the best overall score including originality, fluidity, difficulty, et al.

But, each team will need to practice, so that might not work out after all.

It's a novel idea, but the dunk contest has always been about showmanship and one on one competition, rather than team work. I would have liked to have seen the NBA adopt the format of the 1980s/early 90s that was brought back and slightly updated in 2000/2001.

is it me or the ASWE is getting shorter and shorter every year.
4 players in dunk contest this year? how many will there be in the shootout contest ? The event in ASWE is getting shorter and cut out, is it because no one watch it anymore ? I remember back in 87-88, everyone i know were watching ASWE. Are the players today that lazy or the fan just are interested in the game anymore?
help me out here coz i have been watching the game for a long time.

The dunk contest featured 4 players last year. Through the 90s and in 2000/2001, six was the most common number (previously, there were eight competitors).

I think the lack of interest stems from the fact less players with name recognition and "All-Star status" compete in the dunk contest. A lot of competitors over the past eight years or so are often unknown to casual basketball fans. With guys like Vince and Kobe electing not to compete, there is less interest in the contest.

now that part i dont understand, people like to see games ith more dunks, thast y the've chosed Vince to be in the all star game even though he did not play most of the season, and here there is a chance to see nothing but dunk from players who can dunk like the's no tomorra and yet lack of intrest???!!!

i can watch dunking 24/7 non stop,

anaother thing is how do u get to be on the dunking comp???

What about having a "Dunk vs Block" event? And let the fans vote in the dunkers, and the have say the top 6 shot blockers compete against them. I think that would generate more interest from the fans... Imagine T-mac up against Yao, Kobe trying to dunk on Ben Wallace, Steve Francis against Dikembe, (a healthy) Vince Carter vs Shaq, and Spree vs Jermaine O'neal and Jason Richardson taking on KG.

Just a suggestion..

Thats a good point. I suppose if they were to make such an event, to make a rule where if any player makes any significant contact he would be disqualified and his competitor would advance?

lol, I think this is a bad idea, because

Last Friday I told a friend of my teammate to try 2 block my dunk,
but when I was in the air I accidently smashed my elbow against his chin and he was bleading badly......He went to the hospital and when he returned he had 5 stitches on his chin........

and I had to clean the court, very messy

my vote goes to jrich to win the contest tomarrow.. to me RJ doesnt look much like a creative dunker that could win... sure he got some hops but i jus see him as a nobody still

and yes its definately gonna be a very kewl dunk showing.. amare probably wont win cuz of his height.. my winners would be mason or jrich
