Well the players union has appealed for Jermaine, Ron and Jackson. Hunter says the max Artest should see is 35 games.

the pacers need to knit oneal, jackson and artest face onto their jerseys and make it a recognition to those 3 players through the season

Wed Nov 24, 2004 11:22 am
Yeah 35 games is quite enough, not the whole damn season.
Wed Nov 24, 2004 11:54 am
IS he out for playoffs?
Well... the guy has shown ALOT of remorse in interviews and statements.. is he putting on a fake identity cause if not he's actually sounds like a pretty nice guy!
Wed Nov 24, 2004 12:04 pm
Thats the sad thing, Ron Artest is a nice guy from what I can gather. It's just a case of his past being used against him by the media, by the fans, by the nba... which is totally wrong. Everybody has a past, but some Athletes get a free pass... and some don't.
Wed Nov 24, 2004 12:07 pm
On-court he is presented as some real messed up guy.. i guess fans arent/dont know the guy he really is offcourt!
Wed Nov 24, 2004 12:56 pm
suspending artest for the entire season is bad for the league. preventing the further development of a star. this league needs stars. 25-35 games is enough of a punishment to teach him to not do it again. unless he is totally stupid.
Wed Nov 24, 2004 2:07 pm
Now that you metion off/on court personalities I think its fair to say the nba player can get away with a lot of stuff off the court which will lead to minimal suspensions yet on the court you have to look like an angel.
I mean Ron Artest could have done cocaine, beat his wife, been in possesion of a gun and raped a women and at most he would have got 10 games. I know im overexaggerating but you get the point.
Wed Nov 24, 2004 2:20 pm
well when you're "on the court", you are working. like if you are at the office and start a fight, sure there will be punishment, you'll probably get fired. but if you're out at a bar and start a fight and someone hears about it at work, they wouldn't punish you.
that court is the office.

The players also have the right to a safe working enviroment. If fans are going to physically assualt and provoke players, throw beer, throw bottles, throw punches, throw chairs... basically cause a riot, then the players should be entitled to defend themselves.
Thu Nov 25, 2004 1:01 am
Add to the fact when Ron Artest got hit with the bottle on friday that was the 4th time someone had threw stuff at him or spit on him etc. Once in cleaveland and Boston and twice in Detroit. So the previous 3 times he tells the refs that hes gettin hit with stuff etc. Its pretty obvious Ron is the target of attacks, so how long does he have to put up with this stuff before somebody does something to protect him?

You have a point there. But you also have to recognize that the chance of being identified and arrested is not enough to prevent fans from doing these things. They could wear a mask or something else to cover their face. There is 1 SIMPLE way to stop this shit.....disqualify the arena for many games and fine (YES! FINE) the home team.
It always happens in soccer...when fans throw objetcs, the home team pays money and cannot play at home for many games (meaning losing LOTS of money). Then the GM of the team talks publicly to the fans, saying that the entire thing has cost the team a couple of millions Euros and ask to stop doing that as it only harms their own team.
I still can't believe that Detroit is playing at the Palace as nothing really happened...nor they got fined for such a mess in their own homecourt.
Thu Nov 25, 2004 7:52 am
I agree with home games being stripped from detroit... thats a great idea and point.

I didn't read every single post in this thread, but I read enough to get me pissed off at the ignorance in some of your guys' opinions...
In case nobody has mentioned this yet, all of the fans who were involved in this brawl are getting their tickets revoked for life, and being put on a 'list' so that they can never again purchase tickets at The Palace. The man who threw the beer is being prosecuted and will probably get a misdemeanor assault and battery charge. The man who threw the chair (who has just recently been identified) WILL go to jail, as he is going to be facing a felonious assault charge - minimum of 2 years.
How can you say the fans got away with all this? Not only are the idiots being banned from the arena, but these select few also have given the Detroit area a HORRIBLE reputation. The media everywhere is bashing our city, and it's because of a few morons. Had an NBA player attacked fans in any other city, I guarantee the same thing would have happened.
Ron Artest definitely deserved his punishment of the whole season. I don't care what you say to defend him - he crossed the line when he went INTO the crowd to attack the fans. So what, the guy who threw the beer was being a jackass. You're a professional athlete, you CAN NOT attack him. I've been to baseball games and hockey games where the fans have thrown stuff at players and talked shit to them, but never have I seen an athlete cross the line and stoop to their level. You know, if I was getting paid $5 million a year, I would gladly let some jerks throw a beer at me every night. Artest needs to heal his temper, and until he does, he should be out of the NBA (which in my opinion should be forever).
Also, I don't get how people can say this whole thing is Ben Wallace's fault. Artest voluntarily laid on the scorer's table, and it wasn't to calm himself down. He was letting his ego get to him - he acted like a smartass and fired the whole situation up when he did that. Besides, if you're gonna say "If Ben hadn't shoved Artest, this whole thing wouldn't have happened" then you have to go further back to the source - If Artest hadn't fouled Ben hard, Ben wouldn't have shoved him, and it never would have happened.
I'm sick of hearing so much bullshit from people just because of the media. The media is biased and people take their opinions from it.
Sorry if I came off too hard but I'm just quite upset about this whole situation still, and it doesn't help when people don't have all the facts.

To bad Artest didnt foul Ben Wallace hard.

First of all, as Kobe4mvp said, Artest's foul was no worse than any other foul in the NBA, Wallace had no reason to retaliate.
And then, despite taking a hard shot to the face, Artest did what nobody expected him to do, he backed off and didn't try to make the situation any worse. He laid down on the scorers table to calm himself down as he was obviously mad at Wallace. Then he got a towel thrown at him by Wallace who made him even angrier than he already was but Artest still managed to keep his cool.
Then after that fan threw that drink it was the last draw, I am pretty short tempered myself when it comes to sports and to tell you the truth if that was me, I would have probably hit Wallace back right away.
So I give credit to Artest for keeping his cool a lot more than other people can, although what he did in the crowd was unacceptable, he tried not to make the situation worse as long as he could.
Sun Nov 28, 2004 4:42 am
it's funny though how Artest, had he retaliated to Wallace, would have gotten a much less suspension than by 'keeping his cool' and then losing it.
I smell a conspiracy here, Artest though "hey if i slug someone, Stern will give me something Carlisle won't- time off to promote my new CD".
Also, Wallace through his headband at Artest not a towel.
Sun Nov 28, 2004 8:07 am
I said that to my mates and they just shook their head in disbelief.. how ironic...
And I think Wallace threw both his headband and a towel.. but the headband went in the crowd?
