Latrell Sprewell's latest antagonist is the Minnesota Timberwolves' front office and their owner Glen Taylor, who has yet to finalize a contract extension that Sprewell believes should have been completed in July. With 12 days until Minnesota's Nov.3 season opener against the Knicks, Sprewell yesterday issued a warning to the team: "If they don't do anything before the season it could lead to potential problems.
"They're not showing the interest that they want to keep me," Sprewell added. "For what I've done and Sam (Cassell) have done for the organization, I think it would be somewhat of a smack in the face if they don't step up and get something done. If not, I would take it as it's time for me to go somewhere else."
Sprewell, 34, is scheduled to make $14.6 million this season and is hoping to receive a three-year contract extension worth $40 million. The Wolves are believed to be offering a deal for approximately $30 million over three years, but Sprewell made it clear yesterday that he's "not trying to take a pay cut.
"A lot of other guys out there are not even doing as well as I am and are still making as much if not more," he said.
The Wolves are trying to exercise fiscal responsibility while trying to contend, and many feel they could win the NBA title in June. Sprewell is a major reason why Minnesota, which had never won a playoff series before last season, advanced to the Western Conference finals, where the Wolves lost to the Lakers in six games.
"That's where I'm coming from," Sprewell said. "This team has never gotten out of the first round. We come here, we do what we have to do and we almost get to the Finals. If they're not going to take care of us ... it's a slap in the face.
"People will smile in your face and then stab you in the back. That's the nature of the business."

This isn't good. What do you guys think? He isn't worth 13 million dollars a season especially at his age.

He's just tryin to get his.I understand. But he really aint worth that much anymore. But Mr. Taylor better pay him that money. He stil has a good 2-3 years left.

or trade him to a team, he is 14.6 mill in expiring...that is valuable.

i would go with a trade myself. good chance the wolves can land someone who can put up almost the same numbers, who is younger, smaller contrace, and possible nail a 2nd player to contribute off the bench also.having that come off the books next season is damn valuable.

I wouldn't trade him just yet. Spree is a valuable player still, and if cassel gets injured again, he steps his game up. Maybe he could come back to new york for shandon anderson and moochie norris

Wtf? He's making 14 million this year, Isn't that enough?
If I was the Gm I would trade the sod, He is simply not worth $14 million

He isn't saying he wants more per season, he just wants an extension
If I was the Gm I would trade the sod
Hehehe, where abouts on the central coast are you?

He wants a contract that would roughly look like this:
First year: 12.5 million
Second year: 13.5 million
Third Year: 14 million
He won't take a paycut, but he isn't worth 40 million over 3 years.
Sam Cassell, who I think all agree, is better than Sprewell. Sam is asking for 22 million over 3 years compared to Sprewell's 40 million over 3 years. Sprewell flat out declined the Wolves offer for 3 years 30 million saying he isn't taking a paycut.

They should trade him either for a center or a player to replace him. They always have Hassell and Szcerbiak to take his place. In my opinion you trade him for a center and have something like this:
C - (Someone better than Olowokandi

)
PF - Kevin Garnett
SF - Wally Szcerbiak
SG - Trenton Hassell
PG - Sam Cassell
Or you could even move Cassell to SG and start Hudson. They have a lot of options but I don't think Sprewell is the guy that will help them win.

You think everyone should be traded tho
Sat Oct 23, 2004 1:17 pm
It's the logical answer to everything...
Sat Oct 23, 2004 3:29 pm
spree whining like shaq..i think trading him would be the best option, his age, inconsistant game play, his trouble background all don't equal what he is asking for...he isn't even a all-star anymore really, just a good player and he wants all-star money.
i dunno what team would sign him for what he is asking for..he has no possibility of coming to ny so the knicks can't do it and dallas is loaded with sg/sf

I thought I heard the only team really willing to offer that would be the Golden State Warriors but they wouldn't have the cap if they resign Murphy and Jrich to such big contracts.
Sat Oct 23, 2004 4:25 pm
hmmm, this is a hard decision.....the T'Wolves are so close to winning and trading him away could potentially spoil that but at the same time you don't want to overpay

I don't think Spree should be payed that much for probably the rest of his career. Maybe 7 mil a year. Anyway if he isn't resigned, I'm sure there are plenty of teams out their that would pay him(maybe not that much).

Well, they didnt trade jason kidd.. i wonder if he'd like allan houston and jamal crawford for Kidd and Jefferson?
Kidd and Marbury in the same backcourt... that would be too good to be true.
