I certainly won't mind being wrong, depending on the required specs and how well it's optimised of course.

NLSC Podcast #308: When You Wish Upon A Dev

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Episode #308 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Join Dee4Three and I as we discuss the latest patch for NBA 2K20, and run down our wishlists for NBA 2K21.

A new patch has come through for NBA 2K20 this week, and it's brought some welcome updates and changes. The nerfing of a cheesy move has naturally proven to be controversial, leading us to reflect on attitudes towards exploits and how 2K should respond to any backlash. We also touch on some recent controversies with VC exploits, and how 2K chose to handle the situation. From there, we dive into this week's main topic: our NBA 2K21 wishlists. It's Wishlist Season, and we've got plenty to say about what we want to see in this year's game. From motion systems and balance to roster accuracy and matchmaking, we break down our desired improvements and additions.

Tune in here!

What are your thoughts on the latest NBA 2K20 patch? What's on your NBA 2K21 Wishlist? Sound off with your thoughts right here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you'd like to hear us discuss in future episodes.

Mid Podcast.

About VC, i just cant understand why people pay for it, their mindset.
Ok, 2K is greedy, and made the online game a whole casino.
But guys, it's a AAA game, not a free 2 play.

I guess they will continue as long as they are in this position.
if I were EA, if i couldnt make a better game, I'd release a free2play NBA live, all cosmectic content based on virtual currency.
Fortnite isnt the best FPS but it's successful because enough good and the concept of free 2 play is just about cosmetic.

About wishlist, one thing is dont understand about the 2k18~20 new engine is the 3D model.
2K introduced it in 2K18, i think some aliens faces were converted quickly and badly for that reasons.
But as we can see, 3D models change every fucking years on this gen.
Why ?!
In term of project management, NBA2K seems to be assembled by many services/teams who dont really work together .
So it's a BIG puzzle but all parts do not fit together properly.

That's the thing. The pressure is there to level up quickly in MyCAREER's connected modes, otherwise it's very difficult to be competitive. MyTEAM's presentation is all about triggering that dopamine rush when you pull a great card, so there's incentive to constantly tear open packs to improve your team (especially if you're playing the online portions and want to have the strongest lineup possible). People do it out of addiction, or desperation. It's a very insidious model, and it's a shame it's so effective.

NLSC Podcast #309: A Tribute to Kobe Bryant

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Episode #309 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! This week, Dee4Three and I pay tribute to the late and legendary Kobe Bryant with reflections on his career, and impact on basketball video games.

It's been almost a week, but it's still hard to get our heads around the news that Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others were killed in a helicopter accident. We extend our condolences to the Bryants and the other families who suffered this terrible loss, and talk about how we came to hear the news. This leads into some reflections on Kobe's career, and how we came to regard him over the 20 years he played in the NBA. We also talk about his connection to video games as a cover player, and discuss the idea of a challenge mode in NBA 2K21, along with a roster project.

Tune in here!

What are your memories of Kobe Bryant, in real life and on the virtual hardwood? Sound off with your thoughts right here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you'd like to hear us discuss in future episodes.

I'm glad you found my message reassuring but there was no reason to not post it.
Your post wasnt opportunistic, just your feelings about one of the greatests of the NBA history.
I've listened the first hour of this new podcast, and after (of course) the first minutes, you've both managed to make the discussion less burdensome.

I finished to listen the show this morning, good job despite the tragedy.

I would not lie, i didnt cry, i already lost people i care, but it was shocking. My feelings about him are close to yours Andrew, i wasnt an absolute fan of Kobe, but i really admire the player.
I also appreciated what Kobe started to do after, and his serie "details", havent watch yet his movie 'Dear Basketball'.
But i understand what his fans can feel, I was in my childhood an absolute fan of racing driver Ayrton Senna, and we all know what happened to him, in live btw.
I'm glad he's been able after his retirement to talk and patch things up with Shaq, who really seems devastated.

Like Dee said, we still can play with Kobe in our games, hope 2K (and EA?) will make a dedicated mode in their next game.

It would be cool to see a dedicated Kobe mode in 2k next year. I could see them doing like a Jordan showcase and have you go against different teams through the years. What would be really cool would be to be able to play through a career as him in the present, from 18 to 38 and them automatically switching jersey numbers halfway through

Definitely. I think a showcase/challenge mode is more likely given the amount of players they'd need to license, but either way, it'd be cool to see them pay tribute.

NLSC Podcast #310: Interview with Rod Reddekopp

Hosts: Andrew
Special Guest: Red Reddekopp

Episode #310 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! This week's episode tips off the next phase of our 25th Anniversary of NBA Live celebrations as I chat to Rod Reddekopp, programmer on NBA Live 95-2001.

Rod Reddekopp joins the show to talk about his time working on NBA Live, beginning with the acquisition of Distinctive Software and his early work with EA. From there, Rod takes us through the years, from the revamp of NBA Showdown into NBA Live, to the way the game grew and became a flagship property for the company. Along the way, Rod describes his various roles as a programmer on the series, as well as many of the technical aspects of the early NBA Live titles. He also shares some fun stories from behind the scenes, and reveals a few Easter Eggs for us to go hunting for.

Tune in here!

I hope you enjoyed Rod's insights into the early days of NBA Live! Sound off with your thoughts right here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you'd like to hear us discuss in future episodes.

NLSC Podcast #311: Sliding Into Better Gameplay

Hosts: Andrew & Dee4Three

Episode #311 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! This week, Dee4Three and I react to some rather gross sentiments by ESPN personalities and other talking heads, talk about recency bias, and discuss the approach to sliders and difficulty settings in modern games.

As the basketball world still reels from the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, various talking heads are using it as an excuse to prop up LeBron James. We talk about our disgust with the practice, particularly some very inappropriate sentiments from Rachel Nichols. This leads us to once again reflect on recency bias, both in real basketball and basketball video games. In particular, we note how the good isn't remembered as often as the great, and how it's too readily dismissed. After that, we get into our main discussion topic, concerning sliders and difficulty settings in games. We touch on how games and attitudes have changed, as well as the importance of "out of the box" quality. The issue of modes without sliders is also discussed, along with some ideas for the community.

Tune in here!

What are your thoughts on gameplay sliders, and everything else we talked about this week? Sound off with your thoughts right here in the Forum! Additionally, feel free to hit us up with any feedback on the episode, as well as suggestions for topics that you'd like to hear us discuss in future episodes.

Mid podcast, at the start of the sliders part.

About the LeBron and Kobe's death, i really hate the way LeBron's communicate about it. Even in his first speech after Kobe death, just before the Blazers game, he brought things to himself, trying to justify his visit to watch his son Bronny at Sierra Canyon, before the defeat gainst the Celtics.
King of excuses.... BTW, what's the point with Kobe ?! Would he do that before a game ?! before a game vs the C's ? We all know the answers.

About NBA Medias, it's pretty funny in hindsight, specially if you watch their old shows now.
Basketball Examined made solid videos on his channel. If you dont watch and follow him, you should !
I think that why guys like M.Barnes & S.Jackson started their show All The Smoke on SHOWTIME Basketball Channel. And this show is so good !

But "big picture", we could take every subject of real life (economics, politics, culture etc...), the mainstream medias relay a certain thought, sometimes so disconnected from the reality and so wrong, that they're astonished - when for example someone like Trump becomes president of the USA - when their job would be to have anticipated it, or at least considered it.

Same goes for the microtransactions. Gaming is now an Industry. Their goal is to make money, even if the product isnt good for you. You can relate that to some industries (food, tabacco etc...).

I really liked 310; particularly that anecdote about the NBA Live 98 cheerleader quit screens. It's a shame that organisations crack down on Easter eggs, because they really add to the experience of people who want to dig a little deeper into the game.

As for 311 - I have to admit, I tuned out pretty quickly. Maybe it's just a personal preference, but I like the real NBA talk being at the end of the podcast. Plus I wasn't a fan of how the whole thing devolved into a rant about 'ignorant kids'. I can assure you that, if social media or YouTube existed in the 90s, we'd be seeing the same ignorance as we see now (after all, one thing each generation has in common is that the kids weren't/aren't the most informed). But it didn't, so it's comparing apples and oranges.

Anyway, that gripe aside, I think you guys have a good rapport and I especially like how passionately you guys talk about basketball video games.

Knew you'd enjoy the cheerleader tidbit! Thought that was funny, given how many people ended up doing the same thing. As you said, a shame they had to remove that Easter egg. Appreciate the feedback! (Y)

That's on me. My brother got married on Saturday and I was at the wedding. That is when we usually record.

Not Andrews fault, I am ready this weekend to record!

From what I can tell, Spotify and Apple Podcasts only list the last 30 episodes. I'm not sure why that is, but I'll look into it. They're all available to stream on the NLSC itself: https://www.nba-live.com/category/podcast/
