Thunder facing a direction change as Westbrook era abruptly ends

Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti really wasn't expecting to have a busy summer this year. His team had just come off a 65-win season and had pushed the two-time defending champion Warriors to six games in the western conference finals before bowing out. He probably figured that he would try to pick up a late first round gem in the draft and then top up his bench with a couple of cheap veterans before chasing the title again next season.

Relative parity at the top of the western conference actually looked possible for the first time since Kevin Durant joined the Warriors, ironically because Durant himself was now leaving Golden State. The race to the finals in the west looked like it was going to be wide open between the Warriors, Rockets, Thunder, Lakers, Nuggets and Jazz.

But then it happened..




Kawhi did you do this, Paul?
Free agent Kawhi Leonard had narrowed his choice down to two teams: the Lakers and the Clippers. He preferred the Clippers, but told them that he would only sign if they acquired a second all-star quality player first. If they didn't, he would join LeBron and Anthony Davis on the Lakers.

The Clippers desperately enquired around the league to see if any stars were gettable. They reportedly got turned down by Houston and Washington for James Harden and Bradley Beal, respectively. New Orleans also rejected their approach for Jrue Holiday.

At that point Kawhi took matters into his own hands and gave Oklahoma City star Paul George a call and encouraged him to request a trade to the Clippers. George, despite having signed a long-term extension just a year ago, happily obliged and dropped the bombshell on Sam Presti.




Making the best of a bad situation
Reluctantly, Presti began negotiations with Clippers to work out a deal. He wasn't going to give up a key asset cheaply though. With the leverage of knowing that the Kawhi deal hinged on the Clippers getting George, he squeezed the biggest haul of draft picks ever received in a trade out of them. Five first round picks and two potential first round pick swaps; not to mention Danilo Gallinari and young gun Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as well.

With George gone the weakened team suddenly resembled the 2016-17 version of the Thunder, which Russell Westbrook had carried on his back in a historic personal season. He averaged a triple-double that season and won his first MVP award. But it wasn't fair to ask him to bear that burden again.

So Presti quietly spoke to Russ and gave him the option of staying with the team or getting a trade to a contender of his choice. Westbrook was conflicted, but ultimately decided that a trade to the Houston Rockets to play alongside former teammate and good friend James Harden was the best option for him.

Westbrook was traded to the Rockets in exchange for veteran Chris Paul and some protected first round draft picks just a few days after Paul was dealt to the Clippers.

Hardly a fair haul for a franchise player and dual MVP winner. But Presti fulfilled the request without any fuss, a sign of how much he and the franchise respect what a brilliant long-time servant Westbrook has been for them. He got the best deal he could from the situation and just moved forward.




It had to end sometime
Oklahoma City have been one of the most successful teams in the NBA over the past decade, amassing 531 regular season wins. Only Golden State and San Antonio can boast a better record during that period. The team had been on an upward trajectory ever since they arrived in town, thanks mainly to a core of future MVP winners.

But now, for the first time since the franchise moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City, the team is set to endure a total rebuild of it's roster. Their two superstar players are now with different teams and the fanbase is in shock. Where do they go from here?




Who else could be leaving?
The question facing Sam Presti now is: how quickly and how fully will he embrace the rebuilding process with this team? There are several veterans still on the roster who could be traded away to clear up salary cap room and acquire more draft assets.


Chris Paul is the obvious first candidate to be moved on because of his age and his massive contract. The 34-year-old has two years and $80 million left on his deal, as well as a $44 million player option for the 2021-22 season. Clearly he will be the hardest player on the team to move. If anything, the Thunder may have to package up a first round pick or two with Paul in order to get rid of his contract.

Minnesota and Miami have been linked with a trade for the nine-time all-star, but so far no serious discussions are reported to have taken place. You would imagine that neither team would be willing to give up any serious value for Paul.

Presti may not necessarily be desperate to get rid of him. Yes, he takes up a massive part of their salary cap, but who else are they using it on anyway? It's unlikely that any upcoming star free agents would leave their current teams to join the new situation in Oklahoma City. Most wouldn't fit with the Thunder's new timeline anyway due to their age.


The future of New Zealand big man Steven Adams is perhaps the hardest to judge. On the one hand, he has two-years and $53 million left on his contract, which a lot of people think is an overpay for someone who has never been an all-star.

But on the other hand he would be a great player to keep around for two key reasons: he is still only 26-years-old and he is a high-quality locker room presence. Those two things combined would make him a perfect mentor for the group of young players who the Thunder will be drafting over the next half decade.

Historically the team has never attracted big name free agents anyway, so having Adams taking up 15% of their cap shouldn't be a big issue. If they can re-sign him on a team-friendly deal, perhaps even front-loaded to help give themselves future salary cap flexibility, then there is no reason to trade Adams. Unless of course they receive a very good offer for him.


Danilo Gallinari was seen by some people as just salary filler in the Paul George trade, but the Italian could have some decent trade value. Despite being 31-years-old and on an expiring contract, Gallinari should garner a lot of interest from contending teams before the trade deadline. His shooting ability is a valuable asset which most teams would love to have.

If the Thunder can find someone willing to part with a first round pick or more for Gallinari, then it is highly likely that he won't be with the team by the end of the season. Some team on the cusp of making the playoffs will surely take the gamble on him.


Dennis Schroder returned to Oklahoma City this off-season after Darren Collison's retirement triggered a clause in their trade deal. However, Schroder could find himself being traded once again by the Thunder in the coming months. Firstly, he is a point guard that they don't really need as Chris Paul is set to take the starting role and young gun Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to receive heavy minutes as well.

It just doesn't make sense for the Thunder to have him taking up $15 million of their cap for the next two seasons when he isn't essential to the team. Non-contending teams don't need starting quality players coming off the bench. There are a few teams around who could use an upgrade at the point guard position and Schroder could be the answer.


Andre Roberson is coming into the final year of his contract and given Oklahoma City's direction change, he looks no certainty to be re-signed beyond this season. At his best Roberson is an elite defensive stopper. But does a rebuilding team need one of those?

The 27-year-old is earning nearly $11 million this season and the Thunder may look to use that money elsewhere. It really wouldn't be surprising to see him traded to a contender at the deadline or even just used as expiring contract filler in a bigger trade.




Building the foundation for the future
Whilst the majority of the focus has been on who could be leaving to help facilitate the rebuild, the Thunder do already have some interesting young talent on their roster.

The haul of first round picks that they received for trading Paul George to the Clippers rightfully grabbed all the headlines, but the real gem of the trade for them was 21-year-old guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The pick 11 from the 2018 draft is coming off an impressive rookie season where he averaged 12 points and 6 assists per game.

With Westbrook gone and Chris Paul not expected to hang around, Gilgeous-Alexander should become the new playmaker on offense for Oklahoma City. He has future all-star potential written all over him and could be the ray of sunshine that Thunder fans need in the gloomy fog that surrounds a rebuild. His humble attitude and hard-working nature will quickly endear him to his new fanbase.


There aren't many players in the NBA that are more athletically gifted than Terrance Ferguson. His spectacular dunking displays always thrill the home crowd, but coming into his third season he really needs to add some more depth to his game. He showed glimpses of being a valuable bench scorer last season, but 5 points per game isn't good enough for a former first round pick.

At 21-years-old he has time to further develop his offensive game. He is reportedly working extra hard on his shot in the gym in the hopes of becoming a more reliable outside shooter.


Hamidou Diallo is another player who was drafted more on athletic ability than his basketball skills. Like Ferguson he also had some games last season where he provided vital scoring off the bench. He just needs to work on his consistency at the offensive end.

He is a good defender and actually a really good shot-blocker for his size thanks to his long arms. If he can solidify his perimeter shooting, then he can become a valuable 3-and-D wing for Oklahoma City.


Former New Balance intern Darius Bazley is the great unknown on this team. It's hard to say just where his development is at after he skipped college to spend a year working out by himself. The fact that Sam Presti used pick 23 on him shows that there must be something in his game that he liked.

He seems to be in a similar mould to Ferguson and Diallo in that he is a great athlete, but lacks a polished skill set. His size suggests that he could become a good defender some day. He would be well advised to stick close to Chris Paul and Andre Roberson during training to learn from expert defenders, whilst they are still with the team.


The Thunder are also taking a chance on recycled players Deyonta Davis and Justin Patton.

Patton is a former pick 16 who has dealt with foot injuries throughout his short career so far. The 22-year-old managed only a single game with both the Timberwolves and 76ers during his single season with both teams. He probably won't see a ton of time behind Steven Adams and Nerlens Noel, but he could be a solid backup in the future if his body allows him to get on the court.

Davis was picked up by the Thunder last season after he was waived by Memphis. He featured in fifty games off the bench and his energy really gave the team a lift when he was on the court. His height allows him to consistently finish at the rim on offense and be a disruptor in the paint on defense.

With Jerami Grant traded to Denver we might see Davis getting some starting minutes during the season. It all depends on which forward spot Billy Donovan decides to play Danilo Gallinari at.




Once again, we build through the draft
Thanks to their incredible haul in the Paul George trade, Oklahoma City could now have as many as fifteen first round draft picks over the next seven drafts, depending on how certain protections end up working out.

Sam Presti has a deserved reputation as one of the best draft-night operators in the league. Everyone knows how he drafted Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Serge Ibaka over a 3-year period between 2007-2009 and how that core then ended up taking the team to the 2012 NBA Finals.

But he hasn't always nailed his first round selections.

2010 - Trading picks 21 and 26 for pick 11 (Cole Aldrich). Taking Eric Bledsoe with pick 18 then trading him to the Clippers for 2012 pick 22 (later used to acquire Kendrick Perkins)
2011 - Taking Reggie Jackson with pick 24 (Jimmy Butler was still on the board)
2012 - Taking Perry Jones with pick 28 (Draymond Green and Khris Middleton were still on the board)
2013 - Taking Steven Adams with pick 12 (Giannis Antetokounmpo was still on the board)
2014 - Taking Mitch McGary with pick 21 and Josh Huestis with pick 29 (Nikola Jokic was still on the board)
2015 - Taking Cameron Payne with pick 14 (No stars were picked after him, but a few players turned out much better than Payne)
2017 - Taking Terrance Ferguson with pick 23 (Jarrett Allen and Kyle Kuzma were still on the board)

It's safe to say that Presti has had a lot more misses than hits when it comes to first round picks in recent years. But this is his opportunity to regain his crown as king of draft night. If he can nail these picks he could set up a second potential dynasty through the draft.

If he decides to gut the team even further to gain more assets, then he could quite plausible acquire at least three more first round picks in exchange for Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari and Dennis Schroder. Even Nerlens Noel could hold some solid value if he shows strong form in the opening months of the new season.

At this stage it's hard to exactly predict how good all of these picks will end up being. the Clippers and Rockets should be contenders for the next couple of seasons at least, but the picks from 2023 onwards could be quite good. A lot can change in three seasons in this league. Jimmy Butler makes Miami a playoff contender, but an untimely injury or two and their picks could be in the lottery.

The possibility that the NBA could lower the minimum draft age from 19 to 18 in the next few years is a big bonus for Oklahoma City. Theoretically that would increase the talent pool and make each draft class deeper. Suddenly you may be picking guys late in the first round who would normally be lottery picks.


Thunder fans are most likely in for some pain over the next few seasons. But the thought the most optimistic amongst them will be sharing is: "Presti has nailed the draft before, he can do it again!"

Teams finalise rosters ahead of season tip-off

With the start of the 2019-20 NBA season less than two weeks away, teams have been busy over the past few days filling out their rosters. Each team is limited to having 15 players during the regular season and up to 2 players on two-way contracts.


The biggest story was veteran Carmelo Anthony being handed perhaps his final NBA lifeline by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 34-year-old former all-star has technically been with five different teams in the last twelve months. He started off with the Thunder, before being traded to Atlanta in July 2018. Five days later the Hawks agreed a buyout with him and he then signed with the Houston Rockets in mid-August.

His time with the Rockets didn't go smoothly and he was traded to the Chicago Bulls in late January 2019. They waived him at the beginning of February and he eventually signed with the Sacramento Kings for the rest of the season.

Now he is back for a second spell with the Thunder after close friend Chris Paul encouraged him to take a lesser role so that they could play together. The pressure won't be the same as it was during his last stint in Oklahoma City now that Russell Westbrook and Paul George are gone. Carmelo will presumably be able to add to his 26,034 career point tally by taking as many shots as he wants, as the Thunder are expected to be tanking anyway.


Memphis agreed to a buyout with former all-star center Dwight Howard in order to allow him to join the Lakers. The Grizzlies had no intention of having Howard on their roster once the season started and the Lakers needed a big man after free agent signing DeMarcus Cousins tore his ACL in training recently.

They also reached a buyout deal with Solomon Hill, but curiously decided to keep veteran Andre Iguodala. They must think he holds some trade value and will look to trade him to a contender before the deadline. Alternatively, they could just like the idea of having him around to mentor young stars Jaren Jackson Jr and Ja Morant.


Former Golden State backup point guard Shaun Livingston re-joined the Clippers, the team which he started his career with after they took him with pick 4 in the 2004 draft. He adds some more depth to a team that is one of the favourites to win the title, especially after DeMarcus Cousins' injury.


Veteran Thabo Sefolosha joined his former Thunder teammates James Harden and Russell Westbrook in Houston after signing with the Rockets. The trio were all part of the Oklahoma City team which made it to the 2012 NBA Finals.


39-year-old Jamal Crawford has decided to play on for at least one more season, joining the Denver Nuggets. This will be his 20th season in the league and his ninth different team.


Cult figure Tacko Fall earned a two-way contract with the Miami Heat. He had spent the summer with the Boston Celtics, but they didn't have space on their roster to keep him. The 7 ft 6 rookie from Senegal has gained a large following thanks to his incredible size and likeable personality.


Some of the players who missed out on contracts include: Zach Randolph, JR Smith, Marquise Chriss, Kenneth Faried, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Nik Stauskas, Amir Johnson, Luc Mbah a Moute, Zaza Pachulia, Nene, Brandon Jennings, Nick Young and Ryan Anderson.

They can now either wait for an NBA team to pick them up mid-season or look for a contract overseas.

Schroder is a nice player to have leading my bench unit. He doesn't have the athleticism of someone like Westbrook, but he is quick and finishes well at the rim.

I'm currently thinking about some different draft scenarios.

Depending on trades, I could end up having 3 or 4 first round picks in the 2020 draft. I could use them all and hope that some of them develop into all-stars, or I could trade a couple of those to move up the draft order a bit and increase my chances of getting a star player.

One player who I have an eye on in the pick 10-20 range is Josh Green. He is an Australian shooting guard who looks like he has some big potential. It would be cool to get him on my team.
