2019 NBA Awards

Postby Andrew on Tue Jun 25, 2019 4:09 pm

...aka the awards presented after the Finals and Draft, when everyone has forgotten about the regular season because the champion has been crowned and we're looking ahead to next season. Seriously though, while the idea of an award ceremony is fine, it should be held in between the regular season and Playoffs. It takes some of the shine off the regular season awards when they're presented this late, and there was something special about awarding them during the Playoffs in front of a home crowd.

Anyway, this year's winners:

Most Valuable Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Defensive Player of the Year: Rudy Gobert
Rookie of the Year: Luka Dončić
Sixth Man of the Year: Lou Williams
Most Improved Player: Pascal Siakam
Coach of the Year: Mike Budenholzer
Executive of the Year: Jon Horst
NBA Sportsmanship Award: Mike Conley Jr.
J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award: Damian Lillard
Twyman–Stokes Teammate of the Year Award: Mike Conley Jr.
Community Assist Award: Bradley Beal

All-NBA First Team:

F Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
F Paul George, Oklahoma City Thunder

G Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors
G James Harden, Houston Rockets

All-NBA Second Team:

F Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors
F Kawhi Leonard, Toronto Raptors
C Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers
G Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers
G Kyrie Irving, Boston Celtics

All-NBA Third Team:

F LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers
F Blake Griffin, Detroit Pistons
C Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz
G Kemba Walker, Charlotte Hornets
G Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

NBA All-Defensive First Team:

F Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
F Paul George, Oklahoma City Thunder
C Rudy Gobert, Utah Jazz
G Eric Bledsoe, Milwaukee Bucks
G Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics

NBA All-Defensive Second Team:

F Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors
F Kawhi Leonard, Toronto Raptors
C Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers
G Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors
G Jrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans

NBA All-Rookie First Team:

Deandre Ayton, Phoenix Suns
Marvin Bagley III, Sacramento Kings
Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks
Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis Grizzlies
Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks

NBA All-Rookie Second Team:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Los Angeles Clippers
Collin Sexton, Cleveland Cavaliers
Landry Shamet, Los Angeles Clippers
Mitchell Robinson, New York Knicks
Kevin Huerter, Atlanta Hawks

Solid selections across the board. Can't say that I disagree with any of them.

There were a lot of people pointing to the numbers of Harden and we're asking why he didn't get it. But I mean he does have the ball most of the time for his team plus he always gets himself these cheap fouls to get him to the line so to me his scoring is not that impressive.

He also had his fair share of games shooting along the lines of 1/15 from downtown. Giannis had some great numbers across the board, and the Bucks had the best record in the league. I'd say it's well-earned.

From an historical perspective, when Michael Jordan averaged 37.1 ppg in the 1987 season - the highest mark of the modern era, and most by a player not named Wilt Chamberlain - he wasn't the MVP. Big numbers put you in the conversation, but they're not the be-all, end-all.

all nba 3rd can be up for debate.

all hail the king but lbj played only 50 games on a lottery team. walker had a career year, again, though on a lottery team. siakam, simmons, beal, aldridge, klay were worthy

it's a shame all nba honors determines, or lack of receiving that honor, can cost a players millions.

Man, how sad are the Thunder team? They should be the prime example of 'shitty brand of basketball', not the Rockets.

You have 2 All NBA players, one 1st team player and one league MVP triple double machine yet can't get out of 1st round of playoffs, and gets badly beaten by 2nd/3rd tier contenders like Jazz and Blazers. In the process, made rookie Donovan Mitchell look like a super rookie and Lillard potentially the top 3 PG in the league. Noice.

Let me clarify something here. Westbrook's triple double is not natural/organic. It's fabricated and not needed nor helping the team in any ways. Westy should have rather concentrated on other part of his game. No doubt he's an amazing talent but it is so frustrating his bball IQ is so low.

If he was truly the Triple Double natural caliber player with Paul George as a teammate, our expectations on Thunder team should NOT be just getting out of the 1st round but actually contending for the championship.

sucks for the thunder when its Enes kanter lighting them up while steven adams and his $25mil annual salary is merely ordinary in the playoffs

for once it would be nice for PG13 to make it through the playoffs not hurt. dude was playing his best ball before that final stretch of the regular team
