Older "classic" NBA games updated to 2019?

Postby tinpanalley on Sat May 11, 2019 6:44 am

Every sport has one or two games that are considered classics with a community of modders keeping them up to date. Often it's just because a game has stopped being produced (NHL2K series) but what are those classic games for NBA basketball? I'm looking for anything on Genesis/SNES, PC/WinXP era, PS1, PS2 etc. Just curious what's out there. Basketball is the only sport I don't seem to know about where this is concerned. I figured the community here could help me out.
Thanks!

There is this project: NBA Live 19 Hardwood Classics (Sega Genesis)

It doesn't seem to happen as much with the older basketball games, probably because the sim-oriented titles don't hold up as much compared to other sports (or arcade basketball games). Most modders in our community are focused on the latest game or the generation immediately prior.

Out of interest, which old games do you have on PC?

That looks really great! I'll try that out. The thing is, I do most of my gaming on PC or older consoles, but I find mobile games so unsatisfying so I've taken instead to using emulators to play old sports titles on my phone with a controller.
PC games: I play mostly NHL09, a bit of NHL04, MVP2005, High Heat 02-04, MLB 2K12 (but rosters that crash make it useless in season mode which is all I play), and Madden 08.

Any other old basketball games? There's also a 2018 season update for NBA Live 2004.

Ok, I'll check out the 2004 mod.
So that makes sense, then. The game is actually quite good in its current iteration so no need to keep older games alive. Sort of like FIFA and PES. Sure there is PES6, but for the most part earlier versions of FIFA aren't really better or their communities have just died.
I'll tell you what I would love is an updated Coach K Basketball. Loved that game.

I'm currently working on an update for NBA 2K11, though that's obviously not that vintage (though can certainly be called a classic in its own right, I feel). I may be able to do something with 2005-08, and I have entertained the thought of doing a simple update for an older game for the 25th Anniversary of NBA Live.

Is there any NBA Jam at all that's updated to this last season? Be it a Genesis/SNES console version or Android?

There's one in the works, but apart from that, NBA Jam 2K17 is the most recent one that's been shared here.

My NBA Jam 2K20 TE mod for SNES should release in about 2 months; I'm really just waiting on the dust to settle on the free agency moves in July.

In the meantime, I do have an improvement on Millertime's 2K17 mod here. It's a proof in concept I did to see if I could handle a roster update. The 2K20 mod takes it even further, but I think you'll find it pretty fun.

Fantastic! Looking forward to trying this and your upcoming one. Can anyone give me a hand with how to run the 17 update test rom? ZSNES doesn't want anything to do with it.

Hey, tinpanalley. You're not trying to run the .ips file itself in an emulator, are you? If yes, that won't work. The .ips file is just the changes made to the original ROM, so you need to patch the original, headerless SNES ROM with the .ips file.

On Android, Unipatcher is a good solution. On Windows, try Lunar IPS.

All of my Double Z mod romhacks work with bSNES, SNES9X, ZSNES, Super GNES, John's SNES, and SNES9X-EX (the last 3 are Android apps). The .ips files are linked below (2 games in the current trilogy), but you still need the NBA Jam - Tournament Edition SNES ROM itself.

NBA Jam 2K17 - Overtime Edition .IPS

NBA Jam TE - Double Z Mod .IPS

What I had tried, that I thought I read online, was that you put it in the same place as the ROM and name them the same but obviously there is more to it. Thanks!

No prob. Let me know how it runs once you patch it into a copy of the original ROM.

Wait, I think I've got the wrong one. Wasn't this ROM a beta of the 2018-19 season?

Nope, that 2K17 OT Edition's the right one. It's my proof in concept to see if I could improve on the original hack and set the ROM up for a solid roster update, so that'd be the closest thing to a beta.

In the meantime, I do have an improvement on Millertime's 2K17 mod here. It's a proof in concept I did to see if I could handle a roster update.

There's probably a 20 player difference in 2K20 in terms of the normal rosters, and another 20 or so different secret players. But that 2K17 OT's still a good benchmark for some of what you'll see in the upcoming ROM. It's a good play.

(Don't quote me on those numbers; I'm still adding more players per the other thread, so I lost count at some point. I pushed a good 7 though last week!)
