The Charlotte Hornets have today traded former number two overall pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to the Houston Rockets. Marvin Williams and Gerald Henderson also join the Rockets.
In return Charlotte received Ryan Anderson, Louis Williams and Trevor Ariza.
This is a surprising trade because both teams are struggling this season with identical 9-25 records. But this move seems to suggest that the Hornets want to make a late push for the playoffs, despite currently sitting nine games behind the eighth-seeded Pacers.
Or maybe they just decided that they didn't want to give Kidd-Gilchrist a large contract at the end of the season and traded him for something of value now.
The Rockets on the other hand seem to be resigned to the fact that they will be competing for the top pick in the draft lottery late in the year.
Right now they are only one of two teams with room to sign two max-level free agents next off-season. Memphis are the other team.
It's a great position to be in with a free agent class that could potentially include Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, DeMar DeRozan, Kevin Love, Andre Drummond, Mike Conley, Al Horford and Hassan Whiteside.

The resurgent New York Knicks today traded Willy Hernangomez and Ben McLemore to the Louisville Lions in exchange for the expiring contracts of Shabazz Muhammad and Stephen Zimmerman.
Two future second round picks also head to the Knicks in the deal.
Currently holding the second seed in the Eastern conference, the Knicks have decided to move on the Spaniard in favour of giving young prospect Robert Williams the starting role at center.
Williams has combined with star big man Kristaps Porzingis very well this season off the bench. Hernangomez's expiring contract also probably played a part in this move.
The Knicks have been the surprise package of this season thanks to the elite play of superstar recruit James Harden. They have a good 26-12 record, with Harden averaging 26 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals per game.
He is one of the favourites to win the MVP award alongside Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons.
Louisville were keen to add a relatively young and solid center as an upgrade over veteran Timothy Mozgov. Hernangomez will partner Noah Vonleh and Kelly Oubre Jr in their frontcourt.
The Lions appear to be headed for another trip to the lottery and are in thirteenth place right now with a 12-24 record.
Things should improve in the future though with their core of Luka Doncic, Lonzo Ball, Noah Vonleh, Kelly Oubre Jr, Willy Hernangomez, Dzanan Musa and Pascal Siakam all being 25 or younger.

I understand getting rid of online play and even 2K Share after a couple years, shitty as it is, but save files as well?! Horse shit. I really wish Live were a viable alternative because 2K's anti-consumer policies continue to surprise me in the worst way possible.
If this is the end here, congratulations on yet another very nice story. The only parallel universe where the Phoenix Suns can win a championship
