Classic Basketball Game Videos - NBA Live 97 intro and gameplay

Postby Dee4Three on Tue Oct 31, 2017 11:56 am

Hi all,

My Youtube channel gained some steam when I started posting a bunch of 2K17 gameplay videos. It has since died down a little because I am not posting 2K18. Thought this would be a good place to share my classic gameplay videos. I currently own all the Lives going back to Live 06, and all the 2K's going back to 2K6. I am open to taking requests as well. All of my videos are recorded in 1080P, and the games are either on the PC/Xbox One or Xbox 360.

Lets start this off with some 1st quarter highlights from a game I played last night, NBA Live 10. I am using the Suns vs the Clippers here on Superstar. This is my favorite Live game for last gen and this gen. The game PACE is very much like real life, the controls are tight, and the CPU plays great defense. I enjoyed myself in this game, but ultimately lost.

Enjoy!

Hands down, one of the BEST NBA LIVE's ever... actually.. one of the best basketball games EVER.

I remember this time, Mike Wang left 2ksports and went to EA. He took them to new heights and that franchise was headed the right way. Well until the following summer when he left EA and came back to 2ksports... all because he didn't like the direction EA was headed into. I am guessing, they didn't believe in his vision and that he felt the direction they wanted to go into was not right.

All in all... I really wish EA didn't throw this out the window.
Willing to help complete rosters for season/my league use.

I met Mike at the NBA Live 09 community event and was definitely impressed, especially as one of the first things he asked me was what I didn't like about the game, as opposed to what I did. He wanted us to point out the problems before talking about what we liked, and we did our best to do so.

The change in direction definitely hurt NBA Live, and losing Beluba was a blow, too.

This is using "Crowd" camera, which was the only 2K to have this exact view on any of the last gen or this gen games. 2K8 had roughly 30 camera views, 2K9 had around 10-15. They removed a lot.

This gives you that NBA Live 96 look. And, this game still holds up pretty well.

Definitely evokes memories of the isometric angle in the early NBA Live games.

Lets take a look back at NBA 2K9. See below high quality gameplay footage (human vs human) using skybox camera.

Here are a couple recent videos I made. These will bring back memories for a lot of you.

NBA 2K6 gameplay - Game Highlights in high quality. - They have Craig Sager as part of the halftime show which I included

phpBB [video]

NBA Live 06 gameplay - Game Highlights in high quality - This game is actually underrated IMO, and better than Live 07. Dropping freestyle superstars was probably EA's biggest mistake.

NBA Live 06 on 360 was solid for the time as far its gameplay is concerned, but the lack of modes and other staples were a killer. I think FSS had to evolve into something else, and I liked the ability to switch FSS movesets on the fly in NBA Live 07, but it wasn't as well implemented as it was in 06.

That's understandable. The modes are certainly bare bones in Live 06, and they got rid of the all decade teams that were in the PS2, PC and Gamecube versions.

What I find annoying about the young basketball gaming crowd, is they make comments about Live always being more arcade, or that they always try and be more arcade. Do they not know what Live attempted to do on basically all games last gen?

Take a look at Lives graphics and pace on 06 compared to 2K6 for example. Live is literally going for a more real life look, and they slowed down the pace in order to try and achieve more sim gameplay. They did the same thing with Live 07, 08, 09 and 10. Put 2K and Live side by side those years, and you would assume that Live is shooting for more of a sim approach, especially graphically.

The execution was poor in terms of gameplay, Live couldnt stay consistent gameplay wise. Live 06 had some good gameplay bones, followed by Live 07 really botching the shooting and dunk animations, and changing the running mechanics so it looks like a parachute is coming out of the players back.

Live 08 gameplay was just overall dull, and slow. They messed with the dribbling mechanics a bit, and the post game was still not as good as Live 06. The players had no burst, not real acceleration to them. They did however fix the shooting mechanics for the most part. Rocket dunks were still present, and again couldnt match the look and feel of dunks in 06.

Live 09 and Live 10 both had marked improvement, with Live 10 having the best feel since Live 06 IMO. They even had size ups for the players, and the pace was better than Live 09. Its sad they didnt continue in that direction.

My favorite Live for this gen is Live 16.

And for those viewing this thread, I do take requests for gameplay videos, and own all Live and 2K games basically since 2000 up.

Let me know.

I've got a couple of ideas for NBA Live gameplay videos.

Even though Live 14 wasn't the greatest game when it came to gameplay and graphics, it still would be nice to see some gameplay especially since the Live 14 servers will finally be shut down in a few months from now.

Another suggestion is a stream of you playing some LUT 16 while you compare your experiences with LUT 19, how Ultimate Team can be improved (Ultimate Team was awful and too much of a grind in 19), as well as other features/gameplay elements that Live 20 can adopt from other Live titles such as an improved franchise, removing canned animations, focus on the NBA aspect, etc.

I'm done streaming for the time being. Some can deal with the hecklers and trolls, I got fed up. I had a couple showing up on every stream for my last three, and I dont need that stress. However, I can still put together some Live 16 footage for you.

Also, I'll break out Live 14 and upload a game this weekend if time permits. Any specific matchup you would like to see?

Spot on. The only NBA Live that felt like it was moving in an arcade direction was NBA Live 2003 because of the fast pace, exaggerated blocks, and sillier aspects of its atmosphere (cutscenes and some of the sound effects, mostly). Aside from that, it used to shoot for realism. The fact that the results weren't always desirable doesn't change the intent. I also feel that "arcade" refers to a very specific style. Maybe it's splitting hairs, but I think the NBA Live and NBA 2K games that have faltered on the realism front can be more accurately described as taking a more casual approach to the sim style, rather than being arcade. If there aren't high flying dunks, a lack of rules, "video game" elements (On Fire and other power-ups, etc), then I don't believe the arcade label is appropriate.

I didn't mind NBA Live 15. It's still raw, but I found enjoyment in it, far more so than NBA Live 14.

Clippers vs Pacers. I loved when Paul George led the Pacers, and the Clippers that season were fun to watch overall.

Here is some original NBA 2k gameplay. Game highlights between the Lakers and the Kings, I'm the Lakers. I can't get my elgato to work with my dreamcast, so I recorded it on the Demul emulator. You still get it in 1080p@60FPS, and I included the games intro (Which is awesome), but the sound is a tad buggy. Still sounds good though.

A few things that stand out to me about this game (Positives)

1. The rebounding isn't terrible, in fact, it has some cool animations that I wish I saw more of in the newer games. I grabbed a couple rebounds in traffic and my player would swing his elbows to create room. Certainly a nice touch not just for the time, but in general.

2. A LOT of different dunk animations exist, and they actually look and feel solid even now. Whether it's throwing an upfake and gliding in with Kobe for a one handed slam, or catching the ball under the basket with Shaq and going up quickly for a jam. It's funny, 2K14 for the PC didn't have drop step dunks, and when you were directly standing under the hoop it would always be a layup (Like if you went up from a stand still vertical), but even back as far as the original 2K, you could catch the ball under the hoop and dunk from a vertical jump.

3. The pace is really nice overall, which you can see in the video. Getting up and down the floor is fun and free-flowing, no speed breaks etc. Is it a bit fast? yes. But does it feel free and fun? Absolutely.
