Looks pretty similar at a glance, which is not altogether surprising. The lighting might be a little better. Perhaps not the best angle for making a lot of judgements.

I agree, I really miss 2K14 lighting.

From the looks of things muscle definition is a little improved as is the sweat. The dark stadiums are exactly the same however which is a huge shame since it ruins the atmosphere. Some gifs from the recent trailer showing the dark crowds:

Shake4ndbake posted a comparison:

Assuming there's no bullshotting at work, the improvements are more noticeable side by side; the muscle definition, player lighting, and sweat, as noted.

Not impressed, close shots are always better.
Also pretty sure it's photoshoped; look at the retired jerseys.

Unfortunately, that screenshot does nothing for me at all.

1. The first close-up shots for 2K18 were also super impressive (And we even stated that the lighting looked decent in those, if I remember right). But it didn't reflect the real lighting that was actually in the game.

2. Not that they need these early "Impressive" screens for pre-orders, but these are rolled out like this slowly over time for a reason (Well before we ever get to see any gameplay). More for show and less substance per usual.

3. Face graphics have always been solid for the current players in 2K (And some of the classic players, certainly not all). What I want to see is gameplay, how the players move around on the court, how much has improved overall.

If we will compare this first screenshot from last year there is a bit of an improvement.
The muscle, skin, and sweat looks more detailed than last year's flat look.
I really hope it is not the only thing that gets improved in the graphics department.

For me I still prefer EA than 2K in regards to the lighting department and also colors (jerseys, accessories, etc.)

Damn 2K17 looks really bad in that comparison but one thing it did have was the lighter crowds... but even then some cases were over exaggerated like MSG or Barclays Center.

These guys never really learn to have a balance do they... it's always one step forward and two steps back.

The thing with 2K sometimes they don't even try. They were on fire in the graphics department when 2K14 came out for PS4/XBONE then it started to go downhill as years go by. And not just the graphics department, so is the gameplay part too. They became too focused with My Career and the Neighborhood because of the BS Micro-transactions that they are implementing in those modes.

This is why I really want NBA Live to be a real threat for 2K for them to release a better well rounded game that they were doing during the PS3/X360 era.

Yeah that's not a good 2K17 screenshot.

But yeah, 2K18 is flat out dull. The atmosphere/lighting is just.... bad. I posted this is the NBA 2K18 section, and it still blows my mind. How did the graphics department at 2K allow this to get through production?

And for comparison - 2K14 for PS4

phpBB [video]

The floor colors, arena lighting, everything is just so far off on NBA 2K18. This isn't an arcade game, it's a simulation of the real sport. They have taken so many steps back in most areas from 2K14 (This gen), including many of the gameplay elements. Its just really frustrating.

I've always been a much bigger fan of Live's lighting, with the exception of 2K14 and 2K17, I actually really like the look of both of those games from the gameplay cameras. However, 2K17 (in my videos) had a tiny bit of help from mods (Like the global that ups tessellation values), and court mods etc.

Either way, I'll say again. The screenshots (Being shown deliberately slow WAY before we get to see actual gameplay, not hype video gameplay) cause more frustration than they do excitement. Same old song and dance. Look how good 2K14 for this gen looks...

I think 2K does it on purpose to have the game dull like that. There's a depressing mental aspect to it lol.

2K14 in general just looks and plays better in every aspect. It retains a lot of last gen's simple gameplay and is the best graphically out of all the newer gen games by far.

I wish we could have gotten the newer gen 2K14 on PC. I mean imagine if it was moddable... I would mod the shit out of those jerseys lol. There's always the hope of an emulator that could somehow run the game in the near future but considering the most popular PS3 emulator barely even works and has taken years to develop, I doubt we'll be getting a PS4 emulator anytime soon.

For now like Dee has already said we'll just have to wait for some gameplay and maybe our attitude will change. Right now I have my expectations low just in case, I mean just looking at the dark crowds (a complete eye sore and an atmosphere killer) could be an indication on how this game's development is being treated.

[Insert joke about better lighting costing VC]

I agree with Dee, though. For any quibbles we have with lighting, faces, and so forth, there are more pressing issues and questions about the experience the game will deliver.

I don't even think muscle texture changed that much. That is just the normal map that is shown when a player flexes. It goes away once the flexing animation is over.
It's like the wrinkles in the forehead that disappear or appear depending upon the player's facial animation.

No major changes on lighting. Disappointing.

Big hype, disappointing result.

2K17 had players with huge traps and huge shoulders. 2K18 had better body types, model-wise. However they looked like clay.

Wonder how will 2K19 fare.

Yeah i know that and those GIFs shows that the body types are still same as 2k18

I am starting to doubt NBA2K19. Don't know why but I have a feeling it is going to be really bad. It looks like they are hiding a lot of things. I mean, it's 3rd July and only thing we know is that LeBron is on legendary cover and Giannis is on standard, and we saw one photoshoped SS of Giannis.

This is normal for 2K, standard procedure. This is what they have been doing the last 4 years. So don't let that worry you.

However, anybody remember how early we had previews/gameplay for 2K14? Christ, I rememeber trying the game in early August of that year at the Microsoft store in a mall in Massachusetts. We also had a ton of gameplay footage during the summer.

Probably because they knew the game looked elite at the time and it would help sales. Now if they should gameplay footage early, people might say "same shit as usual" and possibly walk away.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with The Prelude this year. In last year's Prelude, you couldn't start upgrading your player, contrary to NBA 2K17's Prelude. As Arcane correctly predicted on the Podcast, it turned out that they were masking just how expensive the attribute upgrades and VC packs were.

Jesus that's a scummy practice I wasn't aware of. This series is truly being ruined by Take-two... they're fully aware too. The development team is forced to spend all their time working on aspects of the game that will make them more money that they just shove everything down the priority list and they suffer because of it (gameplay, graphics, neglect of classic teams).

They obviously knew it would give away how much of a grind and gouge MyCAREER would be, hence why they kept it under wraps until the game came out. That in itself was a red flag though, and Arcane called it.
