Shaq: I've lost 24 pounds

BY BARRY JACKSON

When Shaquille O'Neal told Pat Riley he would be in great shape for his first season with the Heat, he obviously wasn't kidding.

Days after O'Neal showed off his slimmer physique at the MTV Video Music Awards, Shaq offered numbers to quantify it.

O'Neal told reporters in Louisiana this week that he has lost 24 pounds since meeting with Riley in July and is now down to 331.

''They want me at 325,'' O'Neal said at a news conference to promote his golf tournament this week in Baton Rouge. ``When I met with Pat, I was at 355. I will be at 325 or below when I come to camp [in early October].

``I've always been the type of player to do what I'm told to do.''

Shaquille O'Neal's desire to please his new employer seems evident as the new Heat center has said he's already losing weight in preparation for the start of training camp, according to the Miami Herald.

Shaq retrospective

O'Neal told reporters in Louisiana this week that he has lost 24 pounds since meeting with Heat president Pat Riley in July and is now down to 331 pounds

Known for his questionable conditioning while with the Lakers, O'Neal says the Heat would like him to lose roughly another six pounds.

"When I met with Pat, I was at 355," O'Neal said. "I will be at 325 or below when I come to camp (in early October). ...

"I've always been the type of player to do what I'm told to do. The Lakers wanted me to lift (and build muscle mass)."

Actually, if anyone saw the VMA's(It's alright if you did. I did too. I was a bit disappointed 'cause I thought Chappelle was hosting), than you'll see that Shaq's serious. The man has slimmed down. I don't think it's a joke this year.

Dave still managed to be mad funny in only one minute.

Shaq looks like he's lost muscle tone though. Oh well, still the best Center in the game. I wonder if his body will hold up over 82 games since he bulked up to help himself take the pounding.

Sat Sep 04, 2004 7:57 am

I don't think we have to worry about Shaq being weak.

"It's the celebration bitches"

Yeah I thought he was funny. Even though he only showed up twice. Overall, the show was pretty weak aside from Kanye and Alicia Keyes's performances.

I did not say weak. Weak means you have no strength in your muscles. Me wondering about how his body will hold up over an 82 game season has nothing to do with how strong he is. He slimmed down, that means he has less bulk and will take more of a pounding and have less bulk to offset that with. I'm merely wondering if in the black and blue eastern conference is he going to be able to stay healthy when he couldn't even do it with the Lakers. I say he misses 10-20 games, but as long as he's there and healthy in playoff time they're a contender.

Ok, I misread your post then.

I think this will help Shaq more than it hurts him. Being in shape is so valuable and is the reason why Shaq has had some injuries in the past. I believe that is one of the causing effects of the toe injury if I'm mistaken please correct me.

Sat Sep 04, 2004 8:12 am

No I think that was one of the factors in his toe injury, if he had slimmed down it would have put much less stress on it.
