NBA2K17 PC Frame Rate Drops - found a fix for Nvidia GPU's - new finding!!!

Postby jay-r on Mon Sep 19, 2016 5:07 pm

[Last Update: December 16, 2016]

Same as last year, I want to run this one topic where I would post best settings for the smoothest/stutter-less nba 2k17 experience. Although stuttering out of the box was not that bad as it was in nba 2k16, it was still there if you simply hit max settings. Bellow you will find the settings which at least on my rig give 100% stutter-less game and I'll keep them updated with every patch or new finding I might come across..

edit: July 3, 2017 - in short -> after upgrading RAM, SSD and VGA my system is finally able to run the game maxed out, but the finding remains the same -> WINDOWMODE = _ and MSAA = _ settings were culprit in making the game run fluid on lesser systems.

full system specs:
MOBO: ASUS Maximus IX Hero Z270
CPU: i7-7700K @4,8ghz (1,25 vcore) (cooled by Noctua NH-D15)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB @3600Mhz (16-16-18-36, 1.35v)
SSD: Samsung 960 PRO 512GB
VGA: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X
PSU: Corsair AX850
OS: Windows 10 (x64)

Keep this thread going with every update mr. jay-r. Last year, your Nvidia control panel settings were magic for the game. (Y)

I am waiting for the images with your control panel settings

Setting the game to Windowed Fullscreen mode helps a lot but ruins the cutscenes.
It's the same old story every year. I have a GTX 1070 and a 2560X1440 monitor. It's a shame they fail to optimize the game come launch time.

elsoulas, thanks for the reminder - Windowed Fullscreen mode is also crucial. It's like my default setting all nba 2k titles ever since it was recognized as one of the settings that influences stuttering.

It is my belief that this stuttering, lack of fluidity or whatever you may call it has to do with the implementation of vsync technology by 2K. The second suspect may be the sound engine.

That's true. I remember that last year, even before all the patches and official fixes, vsync OFF in Nvidia Control Panel and Vsync ON in game did the trick (removed stuttering during gameplay, however cutscenes, in/b etween quarter highlights were still an issue).

Nonetheless, it most be noted that this years version is nowhere close stuttering wise. Nba 2k16 was really bad and required lots of testing before you could play more/less fluid game unless you were willing to wait for the final patch that did solve all of the coding issues.

Yeah surely it's much better this year. Still it kind of leaves a bad taste because this year's gameplay is awesome. Btw tomorrow is the official release so let's see what happens

I play in Fullscreen with V-Sync on. Works perfect with my 1070 in 1080p.

However, only after deactivating dynamic v-sync did i get constant 60fps.
With it activated the game would lock it at 30 during cutscences.

That's what dynamic V-Sync is for, locking the framerate to 30FPS in Cuts eyes and 60FPS during gameplay.

I posted my settings, but these are nowhere finals ones as am I still experimenting with pre-renderered frames / buffer count, triple buffer on/off and all antialising settings as their are limited to whatever 2k17 allows..

These current settings give me super-fluid gameplay and no stuttering (even in cutscenes). Only thing that I do experience is slight frame drops (from constant 60 to ~50) in some certain cutscenes, like for example right after foul is made and players gather around the hoop before the free throw <- this currently is the only part of the game where frame drops happen, but its not stuttering.

how about if someone is shooting, then everybody gathers for box out and rebound., i experience dropping framerates by 4-5 fps, which is a little annoying, kills the flow of the game.

Setting vsync in the Nvidia Control Panel to off (on ingame) makes things even smoother.

Just to clarify your Vsync setting in nvidia control panel -> Do you have it @ "Off" or "Use the 3-D application setting" ? "Use the 3-D application setting" is like the culprit of achieving smooth gameplay in nba 2k games, at least in the very beginning before any patch that deals with video performance issues arrives.

Did you compare how "Use the 3-D application setting" (nvidia control panel) and *Vsync-ON" (in nba 2k17 video settings) compares with OFF (nvidia control panel) and ON (in nba 2k17 video settings)?

For me, current settings "Use the 3-D application setting" and Vsync ON seems to work great and those framerate drops I described are not related to Vsync. I believe it has to do with crowd or something else, since those framerate drops occur not in a fast paced action but in standstill moments where players gather around the basket..

Have not noticed it, but I will pay closer attention to it and see whether I get any stutter or framedrops in such scenario.

try jacking up threes just to test. i assume you have an fps counter that you can see as you play, monitor that while the ball is in the air when someone jumpshots. I get fps drops of around 5-8fps.

Well, initially, before I changed the Vsync as described above and before I changed from Full to Fullscreen Window, I noticed major stutters/frame-drops when I was passing the ball around (quick passes that you can do when you hit the pass button before it reaches the recipient), especially in cross court passes, and I am pretty sure that it (ball movement stutter) was also there when a shot was put up in the air, but since I already saw stuttering at passing stage I closed the game and applied the mentioned set of settings and voilaaaaaaaaaaaaa - it was all solved by simply setting vsync and full-screen mode as described.

Nonetheless I will try to jack up threes this evening and see if I get any framedrops with current set of video settings.

To be clear, That would be :
NVidia Control Panel : Vertical Sync : Use the 3D application setting
NBA 2k Video Setting : Vertical Sync : On (dynamic off?) / Full Screen Windowed

Correct?

and may I ask, do you think having an SSD would help?

EDIT ; just did a short research. SSD won't help nba 2k :D my main problem is framerate, so there.

Ingame Vsync ON
NVIDIA CP OFF.
It is a smoother experience

At least on my system it does not matter whether Vsync is set to "OFF" or to "Use the 3-D application setting" in Nvidia CP, so I am sticking to "Use the 3-D application setting".

Triple buffering ON has no negative effect on the game as it was in nba 2k16, so it has to be set to ON as its required in case Vsync is being used.

I have updated the settings that I currently use (latest change: Triple Buffer set to ON, pre-rendered frames set to "Use the 3-D application setting" and in game Buffer Count changed from 1 to 3 since it does not worsen the performance in any way) and which gives super-smooth gameplay (game itself runs very smooth (fast passing, shooting the ball and so on does not give any stuttering effects or frame rate drops, but still randomly in some cut-scenes and some replays I get frame rate drops which cannot be related to system not being able to handle it, but just bad optimization/code at certain points of the game

I will have to see whether D3D_INTERNAL_THREADING_OPTIMIZATIONS = 0 has any effect on the mentioned random frame drops during in some cutscenes and replays.

i'm having the same exact problem that i had last year with the frame rates - if i turn media people down to low, it goes away and i get a steady 60.

imo, w/e 2k did to fix the problem last year they should do the same this year... at least in my situation.

I'm using an MSI gaming laptop with a 980m.
What fixed the stutter for me was G-Sync. I turned V-sync off In-Game settings, and forced v-sync on and g-sync on in drivers.
Now buttery smooth. I get some framedrops sometimes during cut scenes and when lots is happening on screen, but never goes less than 55 during gameplay. Honestly though with G-Sync on I don't notice. It's super smooth. For a laptop, I am 100% satisfied with the game performance.

FYI i have all settings jacked except AA at 2. And my monitor only does 1920 x 1080 :(

Every 2k game need to have 60fps to call it smooth, its not smooth when its 55fps.
I wont buy 2k17 but meh, 2k again really? it was problematic in 2k15, 2k16 and now 2k17? Three years of vacation.
