Tutorial: How to Edit the Crowd

Postby Kevin on Thu May 08, 2014 9:12 pm

In this tutorial, I’ll show you guys how to edit the teamxxx.iff files.

(Note: You can't open the team files using the new version of 3dm so you need to have the older version of it. It's attached below.)

Open the team file that you want to edit using the 3dm modtool.
(I used basagre28's OKC crowd, which is team_024.iff)

This is the crowd texture.
It consists of:
The different faces of the crowd
Shirts
Jerseys
Shoes
Belts
Hands
Foam Signs
Towels

Image

Export it anywhere, then open it in gimp.

After that, you'll only see this.
Image

Then, select all using CTRL+A and press delete.

After that, right click the layer
Image
Click “Add Layer Mask”, select “Transfer Layer’s Alpha Channel”, click “Add”. Then, you’ll see a new layer just right of the original layer. Right click the layer again and check “Disable Layer Mask”, then deselect the “Edit Layer Mask”.
Image

After you did that, you should have something like this:
Image

That is the texture that we are going to edit.

So now, we’re going to edit the t-shirts.(Tip: If you’re just going to make 2 colors, you might just want to use the rectangle tool Imageand just select the t-shirts that you want to edit like what I did there.

Image

When you’ve picked the color that you want for the shirts, use the paint bucket tool and press SHIFT then click at the selected region. It should look like this.
Image
After that, since you don’t want them all to wear yellow, you need to use another color (preferably the away color) So since I'm going to edit the other set of the crowds' t-shirt, I'm going to use the RECTANGLE tool again to select the t-shirt/s that I want to change the color of.
Image
After that, pick the right color to use for filling the selected region.
Use the paint bucket tool and press SHIFT again then click on it.
Voila, you’ve done it.
Image

As you can see, I left the two t-shirts there. I made a mistake and just realized it.
But I colored it with the same method and boom. You got this terribly colored crowd t-shirts.
Image

Export it as BC3 DXT5. Generate Mip-maps and just import it using the 3dm modtool. Click save, test it in-game.
I'll post some previews of the crowd using this technique later :D
Note: I know that all of you are capable of making the crowd better than me. It might look bad when I'm the one editing it, but try it yourself :D (Y)

This is it for now. I’m going to make another tutorial in making the custom signs later.

Link for the 3DM Modtool that you need to use.

Some tips from Bassman58:
1) Between the foam fingers and the towels is a two color Thunderstick. Those are the plastic bat like objects that some fans use to make a lot of noise. Sacramento fans use them. I usually color them with the team colors.
2) TneckDME has a nice template for the fans. He also has shading layers for the t shirts. Check those out. They look much better in-game. The shading is part of the alpha channel.
3) the alpha channel (which really acts as a mask) can block out some of the t-shirts. Depends on which year you use as the base(2011-2014). If you make the blocked sections visible you will have more fans wearing team colors.
4) You can change the color of the sneakers.
5) You can optionally change faces.
6) You can add decorations to fans.
Example: paw prints for Clemson or UCONN on female's cheeks; face paint like Duke fans or Oakland Raiders in NFL; add temporary tattoos to faces or arms like kids do. I usually use a team logo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editing Signs
Here, Im going to try to teach you how to edit the signs. All in all there are 3 signs and editing it is simple.
Image
First thing you need to know is that you cant edit the signs directly in the texture using the “Text” tool . You need to use the RECTANGLE tool again and “capture” the first sign like what I did there.
Image
After that, use CTRL+C to copy it then go to File>>Create>>From Clipboard
Image
Then, a window will pop-out.
Image
Now, since you want to erase that “OKLAHOMA CITY” text there, just press CTRL+A then press delete.
Boom, empty texture
Image
Since you’re going to make a sign, make sure you have a colored background and go crazyyyy
After hours, this is what I got.
Image
When you’re finished, press CTRL+A then CTRL+C to copy then paste it in the texture that we are working on.
TADAAAAAA!
Image
Just repeat the same process and… boom
Image

Import it using the old version of the 3DM Mod Tool and test it in-game (Y).
My Crowd in-game.(I know I imprted it in the Thunder's crowd)

EDITING THE CHEERLEADERS
I'm gonna teach you now how to edit the Cheerleaders’ outfits.

We will start with this. Just do the same process in making the Layer Mask BUT FIRST, (I dunno why) delete the thunder logo then go and make the layer.
Image
You'll come up with this.
Image
The texture with the “Thunder” logo is their chest and under that, (the skyblue) is the other piece of their outfit and there are the shoes which are pretty self-explanatory.

So since I'm making the Lakers’ I'm gonna put the Lakers logo there and recolor it using the paint bucket tool.
To erase the “Thunder” logo, I use the color picker first, then pick the same color as the background and just paint away the Thunder logo.

Image

Now, I'm going to find a Lakers logo and put it in the chest part and recolor the outfit.
So now, this is my final texture.
Image

Export it using BC3/DXT5, generate MIPMAPS. Test it in game.
Previews of the cheerleaders (The tutorial might sound stupid but it pays off)

Where does the pink shirt in the crowd came from since you only made yellow and blue colors in the crowd texture?

Because I forgot to do the very first part of the tutorial, erasing the weird incomplete textures at first.

Just use a different crowd. I'm guessing that you're using bassagre's work. If so, download somebody's other work.

I was able to save as DXT5, generated mipmap. Did not encouter any issue on mopguy and cheerleader. I'm trying to create a retro crowd.

Looks like you have three jerseys that are possibly being masked. The problem is with the alpha channel. The alpha channel acts as a mask. The alpha channel changed from NBA 2K 2013 to NBA 2K 2014. You may have a modified alpha channel or one from 2013. Make a copy of you file. Delete the alpha channel. Load an alpha channel from a good team file.

The row above the "pistons" signs is for the female fans. The column on the right is the male fans. Each jersey can be different or all the same (see Kevin's Lakers example above). The alpha channel can mask some jerseys and does for the original 2K 2014 files. These masked jerseys still show in the game as fans wearing team colors. The team colors are determined by the team colors in the roster files. Just like headband or sneaker colors for the players.

In your file, if the alpha were correct, some would be wearing black jerseys.

FYI, arms are the third column next to the faces. You can add tattoos. The fourth column is the pants and sneakers. Colors can be modified. As is, people wear blue jeans or dark or khaki pants.

Thank you Bassman58 for this info, I really appreciate it, I don't know much about alpha channel. I have some follow up questions though.

1. How do I delete the alpha channel? Is it the "Delete Layer Mask"?
2. How do I load an alpha channel? Do I just open it as a layer from an extracted dds from the original team file?
3. When do I do that loading of alpha channel?

(Obviously those are what I did and failed...LOL! )

This is what I have, a series of layers before I merge all visible layers then save it as dxt5.

I use Paint Shop Pro so I can't help with GIMP. Search on Google or YouTube for specific directions.

Using PSP You need a source IFF file. Using the old 3DM tool export the DDS file. Delete the alpha channel from the destination DDS file. Import/Load/Copy the source alpha to the destination DDS file. From your screenshot I can see "Add Alpha Channel" is available. Some of JaoSming's tutorials probably discussed alpha channels. Look in the tutorial section or wait for a GIMP user to post a solution.

Yes. If you can somehow get/create a texture for a cheerleader's body and photoshop it on there, it would work. Remember that the cheerleaders' unis are for the whole body so you can literally make them nude given the right textures.
