ATLANTA HAWKS 2014-15

Game: NBA 2K12
Platform: PC
Roster: Ultimate Base Roster [Hawk credit for UBR]
Season Length: 29 Games (but in story I'm multiplying them up to 82)
Playoff Format: Best of 7
Sliders: Updated variation I've been making over the years
Goal: Finish the career of Mike Budenholzer

OOC: Hey guys! So my name is William, and I've followed a few Dynasties on here, not too many- but I've always found them very interesting! So, when I originally made my account on the site for NBA 2K11, I was trying to make a mod that allowed me to play the careers of individuals I liked through the Association Mode. Basically play as those players with realistic drafts and document them here. Well, as you can see I'm now finally able to do that! So this is my first story, and I hope everyone can sit back and enjoy this career as well as me being able to finish my goal. I started with the only coach on my list (10 players 1 coach). Also, I don't know how to do those cool looking tables a lot of guys make that has links through the season. So, forgive me if it's a little inconveniencing to navigate through at the moment! Enjoy!

CHAPTER 1
Image

"First I want to thank my family... Without their support I wouldn't be here. I want to thank... the Ownership group... for putting me in the position to coach the Atlanta Hawks. I'm very appreciative for that. Obviously, I have some big thank you's to go back home - or back to San Antonio I should say. Coach Pop has had a huge influence on me, 19 years with him, I could never put into words how appreciative I am."
- Mike Budenholzer being introduced as the new Head Coach of the Atlanta Hawks

On May 28, 2013, the Hawks hired San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer as the new head coach.

The Hawks entered the 2013 NBA draft with four draft picks. They drafted point guards Dennis Schröder (17th pick) and Shane Larkin (18th pick). They also chose point guard Raulzinho Neto with the 47th pick and small forward James Ennis with the 50th pick. However, the Hawks traded Larkin to the Dallas Mavericks for the draft rights of Mike Muscala and Lucas Nogueira (originally drafted by the Boston Celtics), as well as guard Jared Cunningham. They also traded Ennis's draft rights to the Miami Heat and Neto's to the Utah Jazz for a future second-round pick.

The 2013 free agency period marked the end of the Josh Smith era for Atlanta, with the Hawks signing power forward Paul Millsap to a two-year, $19 million deal and Smith choosing to sign a contract with the Detroit Pistons. Longtime Hawk Zaza Pachulia also moved on and signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Hawks brought back Kyle Korver with a four-year, $24 million deal. On December 26, 2013, Horford tore his right pectoral muscle, and on December 30, the Hawks announced that he would undergo surgery the next day and would miss the rest of the season.[25] The Hawks finished 38-44, their first losing season since 2008. However, due to the weakness of the Eastern Conference, they finished as the 8th seed in the playoffs, and just like 2008, the Hawks would not go down easy, as they took the top-seeded Pacers to 7 games in before a 92-80 loss in Game 7.

"I think it goes without saying, it was a tough loss. But, I think the way our group competed and the way they carry themselves in this series is something that all the coaches and the players can be very proud of... When you don't get to play basketball anymore it's very hard... Just proud of our competitiveness."
- Mike Budenholzer

On May 1, 2014, the Hawks unveiled a new secondary logo, which is a modernized version of the 1972–95 "Pac-Man" logo. In June 2014, GM Danny Ferry "read aloud verbatim an 'offensive' comment written in a scouting report" during a conference call about Miami Heat player Luol Deng. Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. called for him to resign or be dismissed. On September 9, Hawks' CEO, Steve Koonin, announced that they had decided not to dismiss Ferry and that they were instead going to discipline him. A few days later, Ferry asked to take—and was approved for—an immediate, indefinite leave of absence from his duties. An independent investigation resulted in Ferry being absolved of any racial or ethnic wrongdoings. "The investigation, which included 19 witness interviews and reviewed the contents of more than 24,000 emails, made clear that the offensive language was not Ferry's and none of Ferry's remarks or behavior during the call were motivated by racial or ethnic animus, or by a person's country of origin. To the contrary, the investigation found Ferry shared his own opinion of Deng, recommended him both personally and professionally and ultimately tried to sign him to the team." On June 18, 2015, Ferry reached a buyout agreement with the Atlanta Hawks. On June 30, 2015, Budenholzer was promoted to President of Basketball Operations in addition to his duties as head coach. While Wes Wilcox was promoted to general manager, Budenholzer has the final say in all basketball matters.

On July 15, 2014, they acquired defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha from the Oklahoma City Thunder. On September 7, 2014, Bruce Levenson announced he would sell his share of the team, after self-reporting an inappropriate email he sent in 2012. Some in the African American sports community have defended Levenson, namely Jason Whitlock and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, commenting that Levenson's email had no racist intent, but was motivated by valid business concerns.

CHAPTER 2
Image

"I think there was a ton of positives from the experience of the playoffs. We were disappointed we weren't able to advance, and I feel like we had a lot of opportunities, and now we can grow from that experience. I think we have a lot of versatile guys, an underrated defense, and a group that can grow from that. The new additions from the coaching staff and the guys drafted will be only helpful as well."
- Mike Budenholzer

The new President of Basketball Operations' and Atlanta Hawk's Head Coach interview during the Summer League revealed a lot about how he felt with the moves the Hawks had made. First move after the season had ended was adding to his coaching staff recently retired player, F Luke Walton. The son of the legend, Bill Walton, simply applied for the job after his retirement. The opportunities were leading him to join newcoming Head Coach, Steve Kerr, in Golden State. However, as fate would have it for the Hawks, Luke was offered more money in the ATL and signed with the team as their Assistant Coach. Walton was one of the assistant coaches leading the Summer League Atlanta Hawks to a 4-3 record. In the Summer League, PG Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 15.7 points, while newly drafted F Adreian Payne and F/C Mike Muscala also stood out.

Heading through the Pre-Season the Atlanta Hawks finished with again a 4-3 record to begin the Regular Season. Throughout the Pre-Season, the reports were beginning to turn that Iowa Energy Center Hassan Whiteside was getting calls from a few teams in the NBA. Namely: the Miami Heat, the Atlanta Hawks and the Memphis Grizzlies. Hassan surprising everyone in the D-League got the attention of Coach Bud and his staff as they immediately called and placed a 2 Year, $5.9 Million Deal on the table with a Team option. This deal apparently outbid everyone as Hassan reportedly signed on November 2nd right before the beginning of the Season.

The logic of the deal really boils down to the loss at Indiana in Game 7 of last year. The loss really shown the Hawks they needed to develop a true big to also counter the up and coming players in the league. Also giving the roster a true sense of versatility if Whiteside can pan out on the NBA level. Now the only thing to see is where this Roster pans out under the new Operation of Coach Mike Budenholzer! The 2014-2015 Season starts!

GAME ONE
Image

    FINAL SCORE
    ATLANTA HAWKS: 83
    PHOENIX SUNS: 78

The game was just as close as it seemed for opening night. The majority of Hawks came out very slow and sluggish, and the energy really never caught up until the team realized the heart of all-around Forward: PAUL MILLSAP. The man played like it was a Playoff game, and as the saying goes "he was like a man possessed!" He put up 16 points and 16 rebounds in 7-11 shooting. That wasn't even the most convincing part of his performance. He guarded everyone Phoenix had through the game! Then from the bench was last year's starting Small Forward, DEMARRE CAROLL. Tonight, Caroll convinced probably everyone he's beyond good enough to start finishing with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 STEALS! AL HORFORD also had good numbers but his energy felt lax until the end. Returning from his injury of last season, it's probably expected in the real time NBA game. The end of the game he really shown up for the Hawks also putting up two big shots for a critical 4 points that put them up 82-78. He finished the night with 18 points and 7 rebounds. The Suns then just had to foul and hope for misses.

Other notable players:
  • MARKIEFF MORRIS: 11 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks
  • ISAIAH THOMAS: 15 Points, 5-9 3-Point Shooting

ATLANTA HAWKS RECORD
3-0

MIKE BUDENHOLZER INTERVIEW #1
Image

"I think we have just played well. Not great, but well. The other teams so far have gave us a good challenge, and while starting the season off winning three games, I don't believe three games out of eighty two defines any team. We have played good basketball, guys like Paul and Al have helped tremendously so far being healthy, but I don't think we should go without giving the other teams credit for how hard they pushed us. Phoenix on opening night gave us a huge problem with their guard play, and Markieff going in crashing boards, and we failed to stop them from doing that most of the game. So while we are very happy, we are also working hard to fix those problems in our game."

GAME 2
Image

    FINAL SCORE
    Oklahoma City Thunder 94
    Atlanta Hawks 91

A heartbreaking loss away from home, and this puts the Atlanta Hawks at .500 for the season. A hard fought win for OKC though, as they proved they can win without KEVIN DURANT or RUSSELL WESTBROOK scoring on a great percentage. Durant scored 25 on 32% shooting from the field and Westbrook scoring 18 on 33% shooting. What killed the Hawks tonight was fouls. Lots and lots of fouls. While Oklahoma City finished with only ten fouls committed, the Hawks had a staggering 19 fouls on the game today. This lead to many free throw attempts with Westbrook alone taking 11. Atlanta made this game close with a lot of tough team work, and great offense off the bench. While the team's high man came from AL HORFORD (22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 67% FG) the team's sixth man DEMARRE CARROLL (11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) put the clamps on Kevin Durant giving the Hawks a 7 point lead in the 2nd and a 4 point lead going into the 4th.

The end of the game saw Kevin Durant be Kevin Durant and hit a huge game leading three. Sefolosha got the ball off a tipped pass on the other end to put Atlanta down only 1 with 7 seconds left on the clock. Only able to foul immediately the ball ended up end the hands of KD which led to 2-2 Free Throws and an unfortunate miss from the 3 point line by JEFF TEAGUE (disappointing 2 points on 13% FG).

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
  • PAUL MILLSAP (11 points, 8 rebounds)
  • DENNIS SCHRODER (11 points, 50% 3-point field goal [3/6])

ATLANTA HAWKS RECORD:
3-3

NBA ON TNT
Image

"I'll tell you something, that game we just saw was a good one. But, and I'll let you guys speak in a minute, but I have to say these Hawks are a bit overrated already this year by a few idiots on TV. I heard a few guys already say the Hawks are in their picks of their top three teams in the East this Season? Come on, man! In my opinion, these guys are a nice good little team. But I don't think they're better than Chicago or Cleveland. And, I have them worse than Indiana until they prove otherwise. Larry Bird is rollin' over in his grave! I mean look at tonight: Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook both didn't shoot well, and the Hawks still lost! So, I think they'll have a good season, but they're destined just like the rest of the East to be knocked out by either the Bulls or the Cavaliers. Still, a good game tonight, it was an exciting win for the Oklahoma City Thunder!"

MIKE BUDENHOLZER PREGAME INTERVIEW
Image

"I don't think the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, or the recent skid really speaks much to the team. Same as I said when we were up three wins, the season is full of that. Ups and downs. Tonight we will be going up against another team in the Los Angeles Lakers and we are putting in a game plan that we think will get us the win tonight."
