Thanks. I'm doing my best to keep it alive :)

2k16 has fallen down my gaming list a bit lately, but as usual the RL playoffs have rekindled my interest in playing this.

Trade deadline wrap-up: Timberwolves make some bold moves, Celtics land star

Image

Timberwolves add veteran Matthews

The first trade that happened saw Minnesota acquire veteran guards Wesley Matthews and Deron Williams from Dallas in exchange for Kevin Martin, Tyus Jones, their 2018 first round pick and a 2019 second round pick from Miami that they held the rights to. Both Williams and Martin are on expiring contracts.

With the Mavericks struggling to a 14-39 record so far this season, it seems as though they have decided to enter a rebuilding phase. This trade is a decent first move as it nets them a potential future lottery pick, depending on how Minnesota's young stars progress, and it frees up over $15 million from their salary cap. Young point guard Tyus Jones is a solid long-term replacement for Deron Williams and should be a decent backup option for them moving forward. He may get plenty of opportunity to stake his claim for a starting role however, with veterans JJ Barea and Devin Harris as his only competition at the point guard position.

Dallas were rocked last off-season when franchise legend Dirk Nowitzki chose to leave and join the New York Knicks after his contract expired. It was a bitter blow for the team and the fans. The fact that they couldn't convince Dirk to finish his illustrious career with them was a big reality check and really showed how far they had fallen. Dirk later hinted that the reason he left was that the roster built around him wasn't good enough and he was sick of giving up money from his own contract extensions to pay for it. He saw no future prospect of getting anywhere near the playoffs and didn't want to waste the remaining years of his career playing for a lottery team, no matter how much he loved them.

The morale of the team hasn't really picked up since Dirk left and the woeful displays they have been producing on the court this season haven't helped the situation. There is a silver lining to all the gloomy storm clouds that have gathered over the team though. They still hold their own pick for the 2017 and 2018 drafts, as well as Minnesota's 2018 pick now. So they should be able to inject some quality young talent into their roster over the next few years to kick-start the rebuild. Who knows, they may even land themselves the next Dirk Nowitzki if they're lucky.

Most NBA analysts agree that it is unlikely that Dallas will follow the Sam Hinkie style of rebuild. With a bunch of cap space to spend you can bet that owner Mark Cuban will be flashing the cash as he attempts to lure a big name free agent or two to Dallas. Cuban is rumoured to have his sights set on making another run at potential free agents Dwight Howard and Chris Paul in the upcoming off-season. Blake Griffin, Gordon Hayward and Kyle Lowry are also said to be on his somewhat ambitious wishlist.

Minnesota on the other hand appear to be heading in the opposite direction to the Mavericks and are bolstering their roster in the hopes of making a late-season tilt at the playoffs. Everyone knows that they have one of the most exciting young cores in the league with Andrew Wiggins, Karl Anthony-Towns and Zach LaVine, but they are aiming to fast forward their build process by adding some veteran presence to their team. Both Wesley Matthews and Deron Williams have plenty of playoff experience to share with their new teammates.

Franchise legend Kevin Garnett is in his twenty-second season as an NBA player and apparently asked team management to bring forward the team's development by a couple of years so that he has an opportunity to get them back into the playoffs before he retires. The veteran big man rejoined the team who originally drafted him way back in 1995 after spells in Boston and Brooklyn. He was traded to the Celtics in 2007 and won a championship with them in 2009, before joining the Nets in a failed attempt at winning another ring. Now he wants to bring some long-awaited success to Minnesota.

The Timberwolves squad looks a lot stronger offensively with the addition of Matthews and Williams. Matthews will really help to lift some of the scoring burden from Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, whilst Williams will be invaluable as leader of the second unit. Despite being a shadow of the all-star level player he once was with Utah, he is still a solid bench player. The new duo are averaging a combined 32 points per game this season, compared to the 12 per game that Kevin Martin was contributing.

Minnesota currently occupy the twelfth seed out west with a 21-33 record and need to make up a six-and-a-half win gap on eighth-placed New Orleans if they want to make the playoffs. Plenty of neutral fans are quietly rooting for the Timberwolves to make it so that they can see Kevin Garnett go out in style. Although, the future Hall of Famer still hasn't indicated to anyone yet if this is in fact his final NBA season or if he will go around one more time.

Timberwolves swap Muhammad for Mirotic

The Timberwolves also agreed to a second deal the following day which saw them send Shabazz Muhammad and a 2017 second round pick to Chicago in exchange for Montenegrin big man Nikola Mirotic. The pick originally belonged to New Orleans and was acquired by Minnesota in a three-team trade in 2012.

Chicago pulled the trigger on this deal in order to reduce the logjam in their frontcourt and bolster their scoring options on the wing. Star player Jimmy Butler has been in dire need of some assistance on the offensive end with aging veteran Joe Johnson and the inexperienced Tony Snell as his only support on the perimeter. Johnson is 35 years old now and is slowing down considerably, so the injection of Muhammad into the line-up should provide an energy boost whenever Johnson is struggling.

Even after trading Mirotic the Bulls still have Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol, Taj Gibson, Bobby Portis and Zaza Pachulia battling it out for the two frontcourt starting spots. Whilst it's always handy to have strong big man depth, the trend towards "small ball" line-ups in recent years means that you need to have flexibility in your roster. Swapping a tall for a small definitely gives them a slightly more balanced team and that could be important when the playoffs come around. Chicago currently hold the fifth seed in the east with a strong 31-21 record and should be involved in the playoffs as long as there is no catastrophic late-season collapse.

Muhammad came out of high school as a much-hyped prospect and was lauded as a potential future number one pick, but his stock fell during his one season at UCLA and he was eventually picked at number 14 by Minnesota in 2013. However, he has been steadily improving his game since he entered the NBA and the Bulls will be hoping that he can indeed become the player that everyone though the could be a few years ago. He has developed a reputation for being able to come off the bench and change the outcome of games by himself. His shot has improved every year, but most experts agree that his self confidence is his best asset.

The Bulls will be a tough match-up in the playoffs for anyone they face as long as Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Joakim Noah can stay healthy. This team will have no fear facing LeBron's Cavs, the young stars in Philadelphia or the all-star veterans from New York.

This is a great piece of business by the Timberwolves. They have strengthened their big man department by adding Nikola Mirotic and now have a very versatile roster to work with. They have a good balance between frontcourt and backcourt players and have the ability to play big or small, depending on the opponent they are facing.

This trade will be especially welcome news to veteran Kevin Garnett. He is forty years old now and it's remarkable that he was still starting for this team. Now that Mirotic has arrived he can take a step back and take a much less physically stressful role off the bench. This trade allows Garnett to conserve his energy for the remainder of the season and to get his body right for the playoffs, where his experience will be needed most.

Mirotic joins countryman Nikola Pekovic in Minnesota and that connection should prove useful when they are on the court together. Pekovic hasn't been the best fit next to Karl-Anthony Towns this season, so adding a versatile big man like Mirotic is a great move. He can partner both players and that will mean that they won't have to be on the court at the same time. Mirotic can also play at small forward if the Timberwolves ever feel like playing tall.

The Timberwolves are ranked 20th in the league for points scored per game right now, but the addition of Wesley Matthews, Deron Williams and Mirotic should really help them improve that statistic. It's still a long shot as to whether or not they can make the playoffs though. But at least they are being proactive and taking a gamble on it.

Chicago receive
Shabazz Muhammad - 24 - SG - $3m - 1 year (77)
New Orleans 2017 Second Round Pick (via Minnesota)

Projected line-up:
Joakim Noah - Pau Gasol - Joe Johnson - Jimmy Butler - Derrick Rose

Minnesota receive
Nikola Mirotic - 26 - PF - $6m - 1 year (77)

Bench:
Zach Lavine, Gorgui Dieng, Deron Williams, Nikola Pekovic, Antonio Blakeney, Kevin Garnett, Nemanja Bjelica

Celtics create star duo by acquiring Cousins

By far the highest profile trade happened with just hours to spare before the deadline passed. It saw Boston send a bunch of assets to Sacramento to land DeMarcus Cousins. The Kings received Marcus Smart, Isaiah Briscoe, Tacko Fell, James Young and two first round picks that the Celtics had previously acquired from Brooklyn. Boston also gained Darren Collison, Donatas Motiejunas and Marco Belinelli in the deal.

The Celtics have been in a rebuild phase ever since they broke up their 2008 championship-winning team and the addition of Cousins gives them a genuine star player to partner Australian forward Ben Simmons, who they took with the number three pick in the draft last year. Simmons was hyped up to be the next LeBron James by the media during his college career and he hasn't disappointed since entering the league. He has been amongst the favourites to win the Rookie of the Year award all throughout the season due to his impressive form. No doubt he will happily welcome the arrival of Cousins though as it will mean that he won't have to shoulder the burden being the face of the franchise all by himself anymore.

Cousins has been the driving force behind Sacramento's improved form this season, averaging 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game as he led them up into playoff contention. Of course his on court output has never been the issue, rather it's his abrasive personality off the court has been a major problem. One thing that could work in Boston's favour as they try to keep Cousins' motivated and well-behaved is the presence of his former teammate Isaiah Thomas on their roster. Cousins was said to be very frustrated when the Kings traded the point guard to Phoenix in 2014. Thomas has become a top NBA point guard since moving to Boston and should relish linking up with Cousins on the court once again.

Even though Cousins is undoubtedly the big fish in this trade, Celtics fans shouldn't overlook the "steak knives" in this deal. Darren Collison, Donatas Motiejunas and Marco Belinelli are all proven as solid NBA players and they will add much needed depth to the Celtics roster. When you add those guys to the likes of Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk, you have a pretty strong supporting cast for Simmons and Cousins moving forward.

It has to be said though that the playoffs will most likely be a step too far for them this season, as their current 17-35 record means that they have a lot of ground to make-up on the eighth seed. But from next season onward they should become a regular playoff team in the eastern conference once again. Exciting times ahead for Celtics fans.

Sacramento had been patient with Cousins for several years, but they have finally decided to part company with him. The troublesome big man had been at odds with several different coaches and teammates during his time with the Kings and had been a constant source of disruption for the franchise. The strange thing about this trade for the Kings is the timing of it. They are currently sitting in sixth spot in the western conference playoff race and finally appeared to be heading in the right direction, but it seems that Boston's offer for Cousins was just too good for them to refuse.

They did acquire a pretty nice haul of assets for Cousins, including four young players who were all top 20 picks in the past three drafts, as well as two potential future lottery picks that originally belonged to Brooklyn. Sacramento's core is looking pretty solid for the future with Willie Cauley-Stein set to take over the starting center role that Cousins vacated. He will be partnered by hard-working forward Terrence Jones and backed up by Senegalese giant Tacko Fall. Then there is their backcourt, which is looking fairly handy as well with CJ McCollum and Marcus Smart as starters and Isaiah Briscoe, Jordan Clarkson and James Young coming off the bench.

Veteran Rudy Gay suddenly finds himself as the elder statesmen of the team now, but he may look to explore his free agency options in the off-season. If he feels that he is too old to still be around for the Kings' next contending window then the temptation to jump ship and join a team that will be fighting for the championship in the next few years might prove too hard to resist. The thirty year old has already moved around a quite a bit in his career and earned a fair amount of money, so he may be thinking about how a ring would look on his resume once his career is finished.

The Kings could be a dark horse in the playoffs if their young players mesh together as a team effectively. The defensive potential of the team is pretty good led by seven-footer Willie Cauley-Stein in the paint and Marcus Smart patrolling the perimeter. There future looks bright for this troubled franchise.

Yeah. I figured that it might be good for them to turn their stockpile of assets into a star player, like what Houston did to get Harden.

It makes the eastern conference more interesting for me also. Hopefully a I can have a good rivalry with them in the future.
