Ya think? Shaq's in the east. Yao being the best center in the west is a given.

Fri Aug 27, 2004 5:20 pm

Yao will be the West's best center this season... he will be the best big in the NBA in two seasons... case closed!

I think Yao has learnt to be a bit more aggressive these olymipics...Del Harris has done so well with this team and Yao... Houston should hire him as Yao's personal trainer! (although they got Ewing)

1. almost every single player ever has been dunked on a ton of times(mainly the centers and power forwards). its not like this only has happened to him.

2. the guys who dont get dunked on alot usually dont because they are to chicken shit to guard what could be a facial. most players today only care about looking good so they wont ever let themselves get in a position to be dunked on. yao has no fear when it comes to trying to block people. he gets posterized now and then but so what, atleast he goes after them. he goes after these shots while most nba players just start walking under the hoop getting ready to inbound the ball.

Dude is 7-6 and gets dunked on by players who are 1 feet smaller then him, maybe he wants to play defense, which is a good thing...but afterall, he got a facial, which is embarrassing if you like it or not. If you want to play defense, then play defense. What Yao did against those players like Kobe and Michael Finley was not defense but just jumping in their way, if he wants to block those dunks, then he should atleast try it.

Man, I gotta agree with you on that one. Along with Mr.T.

So what if Yao got dunked on? That's what basketball is all about; committing yourself and your body towards the ball, towards your team. The NBA these days is getting too much like Hollywood. There are players who want to be traded because their team sucks. Or, they want more money more sitting their fat asses on the pine for 40 minutes. The NBA should be about teamwork about desire, desire to win. Now, I don’t want to get all sentimental on ya’ll, but it just seems to me, that this game is dying a slow death. Zone defence anyone?
More teams need guys like JYD who dig in, more guys like Big Ben- people who work their asses off to be where they are. They don’t take anything for granted. They’re just happy to be able to play in a professional league.
Many centres and power forwards are dunked on, mainly because that’s what the coach tells them to do. (unless it’s Shaq) They tell you to stand, put your hands up and take the charge, or block it. How many times has Theo Ratliff been posterized? Big Ben? But, no one really cares. Then Yao gets dunked on and it’s front page news. So he gets dunked on, so what. In a few years, with help from Ewing, he’ll learn to jump more, time his blocks, when to block and when to get called for the charge, and when that happens- when that day comes; Yao Ming will be the best centre in the West, and maybe he will be the most dominant International player ever to play.

even if you're 10 ft, you can't block every shot. and if you try, you'll get in so much foul trouble.

Yao's already throwing his body in there, which is a good thing already. You cannot block every shot if you try and NBA players are that fast, sometimes you just can't react to it.

Exactly. Even crazy defenders like Big Ben, Theo Ratliff gets posterized every once in a while. I"m sure countless number of times. Yao just needs to mature to the NBA game.

Sometimes? When was the last time that he actually blocked a facial on him? Or how many times did he do that?

I dont blame him for not giving a effort on the defensive end, but he is asking for it, his height alone is asking for it....He is a object to dunk on for many players. Maybe you cant block every shot, but hes recieved more facials then he blocked them, and were talking about players that are 1 feet smaller then him.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 7:04 am

a couple of things.

1. everyone that has been yao's height or more has been dunked on a ton of times. bradley, manute,George, whoever. they all gets dunked on. when you are that big your reaction time is severly slowed when compared to the other players. if you were 7'5 you would get dunked on constantly also, unless of course you were too chicken shit to try the block. shorter players have been dunking on taller players for ever now. this is nothing new. hakeem, ewing, david, the list goes on and on. great centers who got dunked on all the time. i remember that dunk kevin johnson threw in hakeems face. it happems but atleast he is trying.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 7:34 am

Yes, and its still embarrasing.

I dont know what you are trying to say here, that its nothing to be dunked on? Yes they try to defend the dunk instead of just walking away from the play, but that doesnt mean that its not embarrasing when you get dunked in your face.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 10:29 am

what i am saying is, yes it is embarresing to get dunked on but it seems like you guys are getting on yao for it, when it happens to everyone. you wanna know why a player like kobe or mcgrady dont get dunked on? 2 reasons really 1 they play the 2 sometimes 3 so they usually aint down low. and 2 when a player got a shot at the hoop they wont jump because there is a chance they might get shown up.

yeah yao gets it stuffed in his face alot and you are right he probably should block a few more of them, just dont bust on 1 guy when it happens to everyone who plays the 5 spot.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 10:38 am

yeah yao gets it stuffed in his face alot and you are right he probably should block a few more of them, just dont bust on 1 guy when it happens to everyone who plays the 5 spot.

Dont forget he is a 7-5 center, not just the regular center. That is basicly the reason why I am getting on him instead of another center. Its because of the fact that he is huge, most centers in the league are about 6-11 to 7-2 or something, Yao is a head bigger then those players so basicly he has the height atvantage to block these dunks.

I give him props for atleast getting in their ways after being dunked on all the time, but hes making a fool out of himself to me and many others. It doesnt even look like he is trying to block a shot, thats basicly the reason why Im getting on him. He gets dunked on by players 1 feet smaller then him, it didnt happen once or twice, but multiple times. Maybe by reading my comments you get the feeling like I am going after Yao because I dislike him or whatever, just to make sure...I dont hate/dislike him in anyway, I just think that he is butter soft and its just funny when he gets the facials of his life.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 10:54 am

thats the thing though. his size actually hurts his blocking. being that tall slows him and his reaction time down. a player like ben wallace is much faster on his feet and can jump faster/higher. players that tall can never jump. being that tall helps him a whole lot on the offense end and should help his rebounding but his slow feet definetly hurt his blocking skills in a league where players have such a fast step.

of course all that being said, mutombo, maybe the slowest guy i ever saw, was a great defender. yao should honestly watch how he played and take a pointer or 2. sure mutombo got dunked on time and time again but more often than not he blocked it.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 11:10 am

yao's wingspan isnt anything to brag about either, if only he had freakishly long arms too he could be truly unstoppable.

That's exactly what I've been trying to say all along, but Sauru, you said it in a way better way!? (:?)
I'll tell you, it sure saved me a helluva a lot of time.

Yeah, well not everyone can be like Pip. His arms make a Bald Eagle's wingspan look like a budgie's wingspan.

LOL  ! That .gif was so funny :D :P !
Anyway, I remember an article that Stephen Jackson was the first guy to get a facial on Yao. And, Yao blocked two dunk attemps by 'Melo, in a row, I think.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 4:00 pm

I thought kobe was the first?

Sat Aug 28, 2004 4:43 pm

Kobe had a ripper of a dunk on Mr Yao!

Sat Aug 28, 2004 5:50 pm

kobe has had many dunks on many people, but ya, that one on yao was nasty.

Sat Aug 28, 2004 7:09 pm

Hey, i think we need to give the big guys some credit.
going up blocking a dunk attempt is a pretty big risk, either you make the other guy look like shit or he makes you look like shit.
either way its a part of basketball, no matter how tall they are.

just give them credit for trying to do it, rather than seeing some1 move out of the way and giving up 2 easy points, just so they dont make a poster.

This reminds me when he was a rookie, they played at Milwaukee. He had a open dunk, then Tim Thomas blocked his dunk attempted and he fell down on the floor

Hehe, I'm slow today :) :lame:  . Jackson or Yao? :?

Kobe had the most talked about dunk on Yao, 'cause, well, he's Kobe and Kobe has his fans. You know, those ones who pisses people off.
