Bold move. Your defense will take a hit, but that offense could be nasty!

Kings switch backup centers in free agency

ImageImage

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly requested waivers on C Chuck Hayes. Hayes was acquired from the Raptors along with Bruno Caboclo in a recent trade. Hayes, 33, only played in 2 games in Toronto before the trade and appeared in 6 games with the Kings this season, averaging 4.4 MPG. This was his second stint with the Kings, having previously played in Houston, Sacramento and then Toronto before coming back to the Kings.

In a related move, the Kings announced the signing of free agent F/C Eric Moreland. Moreland was originally signed by the Kings after going undrafted in 2014 out of Oregon State. He was released prior to training camp this season but was unsigned by any other NBA team. Moreland has appeared in 57 games over 2 seasons, all with the Kings, with career averages of 1.9 PPG and 2.4 RPG in 6.8 MPG.

Ha, I really didn't want to. I actually wanted to just see how much Moreland was asking for, so I had to waive somebody to check because my roster was full. Then I didn't have the cap space to bring Chuck back, so I was forced to go with Moreland anyway.

Besides, he fits what I'm now doing a lot better, with the ability to run and catch lobs when the floor is open. They will be time to get a nostalgia player in next free agency too :)

I'm still around everybody. I'm actually almost to the All-Star break and a decent ways ahead of where this is in terms of the games played. I know I haven't done any monthly recaps or stats in a while either, so I might just post the scores of the games I'm missing as well as a stats update.

Sacramento Kings trade: Derrick Williams

Image

Miami Heat trade: Danny Granger - 2017 2nd Round Draft Selection (via SAC)

Image

With the acceptance of the fact that Bruno Caboclo has easily passed Derrick Williams in the rotation (and even pushing Jae Crowder for more), the Kings traded the former #2 overall pick to Miami at the trade deadline. In Sacramento, Williams had his moments and plenty of chances to reclaim some of the talent that made him the #2 pick in 2011 but never quite had the breakout he could have. Derrick still struggled with consistency too much for the Kings to keep investing in the 25 year-old forward now that his contract was set to expire. From Miami they reacquired their own 2nd round pick as well as the 2-year contract of Danny Granger. If they are going to have a 4th small forward on the roster, they might as well make it a consistent veteran who can offer other bonuses aside from on-court production.

The Heat get out of the second year of Granger's deal and get an expiring in return, which is enough of a benefit when you consider the team can have $15M in cap room this summer, or up to $21M if Josh McRoberts declines his player option. With James Ennis being the only other true small forward on the roster, Williams could get a decent amount of minutes in Miami down the stretch of this season to try and rebuild his stock for free agency. Aside from a test run for Williams, the Heat get to see if he fits with other young players like Napier, Noguiera, and Russ Smith and could resign him cheaply if they choose.

Shabazz Napier an All-Star? There's unlikely and then there's that.

Mike Conley looks like he is in his prime 9.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game and an all star appearance.
I like the move made by warriors to trade Barnes, I wonder how it will affect both franchises.

He's an 82 overall and some of his attributes are insane. He's putting up 18.5, 3.4, 6.7, 1.4, on 46/40/96. Ennis is putting up 14.5 and 5.5 in his own right too. Miami has plenty to work with :)

That's why I thought the trades for Martin and Dudley were really good moves. Their main problem was that they had no backup to Lillard before signing Brain Roberts. Damian is playing over 40 a game.

Memphis is starting Jordan Adams and Jarnell Stokes, even above Z-Bo. Randolph is down to a 75 overall and falling more. Conley has to carry a lot for them

The Warriors actually beat me pretty bad when I played them right after the All-Star Break. They start Ezeli now and Giannis helps their defense a lot. It doesn't help that none of my point guards can defend anybody...

I don't want to be the guy constantly trading and changing the roster, but Lawson, George Hill, MCW, Lowry, Collison (as well as a generously rated Patty Mills and Dellavedova) are all free agents this offseason. CP3 and Parker have player options too. If I need an upgrade (which I feel I do) I might try to clear cap space at the draft and chase somebody. Reggie just doesn't defend well enough and his scoring talent is wasted with the starters. Martin isn't developed enough yet to take over full-time.

Reggie Jackson regaining his confidence in Sacramento

Image
The reemergence of Reggie Jackson since the Anderson trade has given the Kings answers as well as more questions

When the Kings traded Derrick Favors for Ryan Anderson, the obvious benefit was more offensive space for Demarcus Cousins. But there is a King who has arguably benefited just as much: Reggie Jackson. His strengths of attacking the basket and his play in the pick-and-roll are accentuated by having three other shooters on the floor instead of just two. His numbers exploded in the immediate aftermath; 17.4 PPG and 8.5 APG in the first 18 games after the trade, including a 21-9-8 game against Indiana and a 34 point effort against Portland. Overall, his numbers improved over the total 35 games since the trade with 14.6 PPG and 8.1 APG, both of which are up from his season averages.

The combination that the Kings start the game with might not be their best one. Jackson needs floor space for driving and versatile bigs to run screens with. Anderson fits both. With Cousins' ability to roll to the rim, great hands to catch in traffic, and touch to hit the midrange jumper, he fits as well. McLemore's spot-up ability is enough for him to mesh with Reggie. This leaves Rudy Gay as the awkward fit with Jackson. Both need the ball frequently to shine and the effectiveness of either is reduced when playing off the ball. Jae Crowder fits extremely well into a Jackson/McLemore/Anderson/Cousins lineup with his low-usage perimeter shooting and his steady defense. But moving Rudy to the bench or to another team is not something the Kings have immediate plans to do.

If the Kings stick with Gay, then it is Jackson who is mismatched with the starters. Rudy can work in the midrange or post up because of Anderson's ability to stretch the defense instead of standing by the rim. Yet it takes the ball out of Reggie's hands and makes him stand in the corner, leaving his talent underutilized. Some would argue Jackson's game is better suited as a 6th man anyway given the bench shooting of Lekic and Acy's versatility, but the Kings are left with the question of who can replace him as a starting point guard. Julio Martin still is not ready to be a full-time starter, although he has the pass-first skillset a high-usage McLemore/Gay/Anderson/Cousins lineup could benefit from.

It is worth noting that the Kings have gone back and forth between Martin and Jackson as the starter multiple times in the past two seasons, and there are numbers that support both. The deciding factor should be the fit with the rest of the starting lineup. With the addition of Anderson, Jackson gets the nod for his role in the Kings' new high-powered offense instead of Martin and the half-court, physical team with Favors that did not have the defensive success the Kings hoped it would. McLemore produces better (Ben has scored almost 17 PPG in the past month) and Anderson gets more open shots with Jackson. Rudy can control the ball more when Martin is on the floor. Cousins can dominate either way.

There are a few soon-to-be free agent point guards that fit this mold of a more balanced, lower-usage floor general like Michael Carter-Williams and even Darren Collison, but the Kings would need to move a larger contract to sign one if that is the route they choose. The contract they would need to move would, ironically, be Reggie Jackson ($6.7M) or Ryan Anderson ($8.5M). Trading Jackson to sign a new point guard would defeat part of its own purpose of letting Reggie play that 6th man role. Trading Anderson and keeping Jackson and Martin makes signing another high-quality point guard less appealing, as well as leaving a big hole in the Kings frontcourt. Either trade Jackson and sign a different floor leader, or commit to Reggie's impressive fit with an Anderson/Cousins frontcourt and figure out a solution for Rudy Gay's usage requirements. Both choices are conceivable, but neither are an obvious answer for the Kings to move from a low-seed playoff team to a squad poised for a deep postseason run.

Crowder out until postseason after dislocating Patella

Image

The Sacramento Kings announced F Jae Crowder suffered a Patellar Dislocation in his left knee and will miss at least two weeks. He suffered the injury during the third quarter of the team's win over the Warriors. He will be reevaluated at the end of the regular season and may be active for the playoffs. He is averaging 7.7 PPG and 2.7 RPG in 20.2 MPG this season for the Kings.

The Kings have activated Danny Granger, whose veteran experience will help support Bruno Caboclo at the backup small forward. The Kings have 15 games left in the regular season.
