Two-time NBA champion Andrew Bynum today signed a two-year $8 million contract with the high-flying Philadelphia 76ers. This will be the second stint with the Sixers for the injury-plagued twenty-eight year old.
The 2012 all-star originally joined the Sixers as part of the mega trade that saw Dwight Howard land in Los Angeles with the Lakers, but didn't play a game for the franchise due to chronic knee issues. He missed the entire season through injury and then signed a two-year deal in Cleveland the following off-season. The Cavs traded him to Chicago only a few months later and the Bulls immediately waived him. A month later he signed with Indiana for the rest of the 2013-14 season, but was let go at the end of that season and subsequently spent a year on the sidelines until signing with Philadelphia today.
Despite a busy off-season that saw them acquire Harrison Barnes, Jimmy Butler, Dario Saric, Kelly Oubre and Mario Hezonja, the Sixers are still well below the salary cap. Signing Bynum to this contract is a low risk move financially, because it will expire right before Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel come to the end of their rookie contracts. General manager Sam Hinkie is doing a good job keeping flexibility in the Sixers' salary cap for the future. His biggest priority at this point is preserving enough future cap room to make sure that he can keep hold of rising superstar Joel Embiid.
Bynum claims to be healthy and that his knee problems are a thing of the past. It remains to be seen what condition he is in. He will most likely share minutes with fellow injury-plagued big man Greg Oden as backup to Joel Embiid.
Philadelphia also waived forward Brandon Davies today. The twenty-four year old big man out of BYU had only played limited minutes in ten games this season and clear wasn't part of the long-term plans in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Roster
_C - Joel Embiid, Andrew Bynum, Greg Oden
PF - Nerlens Noel, Dario Saric
SF - Harrison Barnes, Kelly Oubre, Jerami Grant
SG - Jimmy Butler, KJ McDaniels, Mario Hezonja
PG - Michael Carter-Williams, Tony Wroten

I have a really hard time stopping SF this year, I don't even know why. You are still doing pretty good, keep it up!
