The change in ownership and front office staff in Sacramento resulted in a major overhaul of the teams that won less than 30 games at the end of the previous regime. The roster has undeniably improved and something positive has been built from the relative ashes and crumbs of previous years. The Kings seem poised to get back to the playoffs soon, but can they return to the postseason on a consistent basis and once again reign over an extremely difficult Western Conference?

Re: - Here We Reign - A Sacramento Kings Association

Postby Vespasian92 on Mon Oct 20, 2014 11:21 am

Association Note:

Intended as a continuation of my previous Kings association, I was unable to fully match my roster from 2k14 for obvious reasons. Considering the fact that I went through the 2014-15 season and the offseason in summer 2015, some of those transactions cannot be reproduced, most notably the addition of Iman Shumpert. Essentially I am noting that the 2014-15 season from my 2k14 thread never happened, leaving us without a playoff appearance against OKC and the transactions of the following offseason. The league transactions will not be reproduced (such as Lebron to the Lakers) and will instead default to the 2k15 rosters with 2014 rookies on their correct teams, with the following exceptions:

Isaiah Thomas is on the Thunder, due to my Isaiah Thomas/Reggie Jackson + 1st Round Draft Pick trade.
John Henson, Reggie Jackson, Quincy Acy, and Allen Crabbe are Kings, as are Carl Landry and Omri Casspi.
Darren Collison remains a Clipper instead of signing with the Kings.
Ramon Sessions is in Phoenix to compliment the Suns' backcourt attack with Dragic, Bledsoe, and rookie Tyler Ennis.
Jordan Farmar, Reggie Evans, and Ryan Hollins are now free agents.

Little has changed in my personal time as I am still enjoying my new employment opportunity, so I can make no promises in regards to the frequency of updates here. I expect to spent less time on this than I did previously but still hope to carry this for multiple seasons once again.

Updated Kings core meshes well on opening night

Image
Reggie Jackson shined for his new team with an outstanding effort

Following a busy transitional period in which the Kings added Reggie Jackson, John Henson, and Nik Stauskas to their core of Demarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, and the McRookies of McCallum and McLemore, they entered this season as a team with at least some measure of expectations for themselves. Expectations were something that the Kings haven't had in almost a decade, which is as long as their current playoff drought has lasted. But many would consider Sacramento a team in win-now mode despite their 28-win season and postseason drought. The trade for Rudy Gay and his $19M contract resulted in a strong stint in Sacramento for the forward and the potential success from a Gay/Cousins combination has left the Kings with a legitimate debate about committing long-term money to Gay despite him approaching 30 and having the label of an inefficient jacker from his time in Toronto. But before those questions can be asked, the success of the current Kings' core this season must be determined.

The season started on Wednesday as they hosted the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors are coming off consecutive playoff seasons and are undoubtedly ahead of the Kings in that regard, yet their games are always tightly-contested and high-scoring contests. This game was no different, as the offensive forces on either side did their work early and often. Stephen Curry had 14 points in the opening quarter while Cousins led the Kings with 8. But Reggie Jackson was the surprise force for Sacramento with his quickness and athleticism driving the lane. Jackson was effective breaking down his man as well as using screens to get himself a driving lane. He was 7/11 from the floor in the first half and helped the Kings hold the halftime deficit to just 3.

In the second half, Cousins and Jackson continued to carry the Kings and were the only double-digit scorers until Rudy Gay got his 10th and 11th points early in the 4th. The duo had given the Kings a lead heading into the final period. But when Cousins and Jackson went to the bench for a brief rest, Sacramento started unraveling and saw their lead, which was 7 at one point, crumble. Stephen Curry led the Warriors in smashing the deficit behind repeated forays into the paint and to the charity stripe. The Kings put their full compliment of starters back in the contest and held to a lead of a single point down the stretch. In the final minute, Demarcus Cousins drove around Andrew Bogut for the layup and gave Sacramento a 3 point advantage. But on the other end, a difficult Stephen Curry triple over Reggie Jackson tied the score at 119 with just 1.3 left on the clock. The Kings failed to get an attempt up at the other end before the buzzer and were forced to face overtime.

Cousins and Jackson seemed burdened with the scoring load once again in the extra 5 minutes, but the Warriors' 4th quarter rally left them without a decent rest and looking fatigued. With that said, somebody else would need to step up for the Kings to secure the win in their home opener. Still the hot shooter for Golden State, Curry scored the first 4 points in overtime and left the Kings looking lost. Rudy Gay had shot just 6/16 previously in the contest yet was unafraid to accept the burden for the Kings left from a fatigued Cousins and Jackson. Gay made 4 of his 5 OT attempts to bring the Kings back into the game. He also deflected a pass intended for Andre Iguodala and took it the distance for the and-1 layup. He made the FT to give Sacramento a 2-point lead. Curry was doubled on the other end with 40 seconds left and gave it up to David Lee. Lee was challenged by John Henson and missed a turnaround jumper. Cousins pulled down the rebound and the Kings used good free throw shooting to hold on for the home win. Despite the outstanding offense from Jackson and Cousins and 3PT makes from McLemore and Stauskas, the poor defense from Sacramento left the game in doubt for much of the night. If the Kings want to surprise people and contend for the postseason, their effort on the defensive end is what must be improved.

NBA Injury Updates:
Clippers' title hopes crushed as CP3 tears Achillies
The Los Angeles Clippers had very high hopes entering the season, but those dreams died just 9 games into the year. In November 17th's game against the Bulls, Chris Paul tore his Right Achilles Tendon and will require surgery. CP3 will miss the rest of the season. This is his first significant injury in his NBA career, aside from Torn Cartilage in his left knee in 2009-10 with the Hornets. Ironically, it was Darren Collison who used Paul's absence in 2010 to prove his own NBA value and is now Paul's backup in L.A. Collison is an adequate player, but the Clippers have clearly dropped out of the conversation of title contenders without their star guard.

November Summary

Bulls looking unstoppable, but is it sustainable?

Image

The Bulls lost their first 3 games of the year in disappointing fashion, culminating in a 112-110 loss to the rebuilding Timberwolves. Expectations that were very high entering the year cooled after that, but nobody expected them to respond like they have. The Bulls have run off an incredible 14 straight victories after their 0-3 start and a healthy D-Rose deserves the vast majority of the credit. Rose has been the game-high scorer in 12 of the Bulls' 17 games so far this season and is averaging 28.6 PPG and 7.1 APG. Even more incredible is the fact that he is playing the most minutes of his career, barely less than 40 a night. Coming off a series of significant injuries and facing skepticism about his long-term outlook, Derrick could not be doing anything more to silence those critics. Supported by impressive two-way play from Jimmy Butler and bigmen Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol, and Taj Gibson, a rejuvenated Rose has his team riding high and looking like the new title favorites. But the fact remains: D-Rose is still barely removed from a 3-year stretch in which he played just 49 of the possible 230 regular season games. Chicago will only go as far as Derrick's knees do, and one ugly fall for Rose will bring the Bulls' title dreams crashing down. Just ask the Clippers, who lost Chris Paul for the season and are no longer considered contenders.

Kings Month in Review

Image

Disappointment no longer

When the Kings drafted Ben McLemore 7th overall in 2013, many considered it the steal of a weak draft class. His athleticism was unmistakable and a quality shooting form suggested a bright future for the Kansas product. But his rookie year was far from ideal, despite playing over 26 minutes per game and starting 55 contests due to the Kings' need at shooting guard aside from a slumping Marcus Thornton. He shot just 37% from the field and an even worse 32% from downtown. His rookie struggles left some doubting his long-term NBA prospects despite his physical gifts. The Kings drafted a shooting guard yet again this summer, taking Michigan product Nik Stauskas at 8th overall. The speculation ran rampant that the Kings drafted him to be their starter of the future considering McLemore's struggles, but that theory was silenced by the sophomore's play this year.

Even considering the small sample size, McLemore has emerged with the possibility of becoming the #3 option for the Kings despite the presence of Reggie Jackson next to Cousins and Gay. He is scoring almost 13 points every night on 54% from the floor. Obviously that is likely unsustainable for an 82-game season, as is his current mark of 57% from downtown while attempting almost 3.5 triples a game. It is that excellent efficiency that makes some suggest McLemore should be getting more touches as a primary scoring option ahead of the point guard. But regardless of if he earns that distinction or not, what is clear is that the potential the former Jayhawk showed in flashes last season has been on display consistently so far this year. For the Kings to make the next step as a playoff contender around Demarcus Cousins, they need some of their complimentary players to develop as well. McLemore might have been #1 on the Kings' list of young players needing development but now that dubious position might belong to someone else.

Hopefully you can get back over .500 and maybe sneak into the Playoffs like the real Kings might do if the Thunder can't sneak in. McLemore's been great. shooting percentages out of this world.

The misery of high potential

Image
Just when teams are ready to give up on him, Derrick Williams displays flashes of greatness that antagonize front office staff

The story is a common one in today's NBA. College players make the jump to the NBA and are hyped for their vertical, wingspan, length, quickness, and all the other physical tools that NBA pros need. Picked in the lottery, they realize that pure athleticism cannot carry them like it did in high school and college and the expectations of being a high draft pick wear on them. They hear the bust labels and often shuffle around from team to team until they either develop a consistent NBA skill and hang on a team's bench or end up out of the league.

Such a story applies perfectly to Derrick Williams. Selected #2 overall behind Kyrie Irving in 2011, the Timberwolves saw Williams as a versatile athlete that could fit in with Kevin Love's offensive skill as well as be a highlight-reel beneficiary of the passing of new overseas arrival Ricky Rubio. The Arizona product has a passable but disappointing rookie year in Minnesota with 9 points and 5 rebounds in 21.5 minutes. The expectations were obviously high for Williams as a top-2 pick, and those expectations often made even nominal improvement inadequate after his rookie season. Such nominal improvement included better shooting efficiency in his sophomore season, including raising his 3PT percentage from 27% to 33%. He was scoring 12 points a night and started 56 of 78 games, but wasn't enough to sway people's perceptions. Williams is a player who needs offensive touches in order to be effective, which was often misconstrued as selfishness. In 2013-14, his 3rd NBA season, Derrick had a difficult start to the season and found himself losing minutes quickly. Fans in Minnesota were ready to move on and wanted their team to trade their former #2 pick for any kind of asset. That is exactly what the Wolves did at the end of November when they sent him to Sacramento for Luc Mbah a Moute.

The Kings were in a transition year after an exciting change of ownership and FO staff. Searching for talent and upside to place with developing center Demarcus Cousins, Williams seemed like a perfect low-risk, high-reward player. In his first games in Sacramento, Derrick showcased his talents easily with strong performances. His Kings debut against the Clippers featured a memorable sequence of back-to-back alleyoops that made Kings fans excited about the new addition. He followed it up 5 games later with a career-best 31 points in 12-16 shooting against Dallas. Against the Mavericks he also made 3 of 5 attempts from behind the arc, supposedly one of his biggest NBA weaknesses. The starting position in Sacramento was all but guaranteed and Williams seemed to have a golden ticket to revive his career.

But in the beginning of December, not even two weeks after trading for Williams, the Kings acquired Rudy Gay from the Raptors in another high-upside trade. Obviously the superior player, Gay was inserted as the starting small forward and Derrick's minutes slowly dwindled. He experienced inconsistent minutes in the ensuing months despite 23 double-figure scoring games and a pair of 26-point outings in the remainder of the year. For a young player who thrived with a consistent role in Sacramento, the Rudy Gay trade hurt his own career and development as much as it helped the Kings as a team. Now securely resigned to a reserve role, Williams has even more competition this season for minutes with the addition of Omri Casspi. As the better shooter, Casspi had a legitimate case for all of the backup small forward minutes. The trade talk was beginning in fan circles hoping Williams' expiring deal could bring at least a 2nd round pick from a team. At least until Friday's game against the Pacers.

Rudy Gay suffered a minor shoulder injury against the Raptors, but it was significant enough for the Kings to sit him out during the team's back-to-back on Friday and Saturday. Williams got the start and once again had reassurance of a legitimate role and minutes, at least temporarily. Against the Pacers Derrick looked like the old Derrick, the explosive forward who can aggressively attack the rim and finish around anybody. He topped his 18-10 performance against the Pacers with a 20-12 night against Orlando. In the Magic game he also added 3 steals and 2 blocks, his rejuvenation showing on the defensive side as well. Fans were back on his side and now were concerned when Rudy was well enough to return to action on Monday. Once again back on the bench, would Derrick continue his engaged and aggressive play if he even played at all? 10 DNP-CD in the team's first 20 games suggested he might not even see the court despite his strong play in Gay's absence. But 17 minutes against the Jazz were enough for Williams to keep up his confidence, minutes in which he scored 13 points on 8 shots with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Throughout his career he has shown he is more comfortable and confident when he is a starter. But the Jazz game showed he can still contribute off the bench. So for the Kings, the questions remain. What is the magic number of minutes that Williams needs to be the player he has shown the capability to be? If not a starter, is a consistent 20 minutes something he can give the Kings right now? He and Rudy can play together against many, if not most lineups. But the Kings already have more than enough depth at the 4, where Derrick could fit beside Gay. The team would need to change their rotation and create a role for Williams to play more, but with his renowned inconsistency, would it be worth it? If he produces like he has recently, Derrick is worth far more to the team than whatever he could bring in a trade right now. But if he fails to produce in minutes taken from the likes of Landry and Casspi, it could cost the Kings some games in their dreams for a playoff seed. Either way, Derrick is still just 23 and has more than enough crowd-pleasing athleticism and possibly still untapped potential that makes his role and even his contract situation this summer more difficult than it probably should be.

I wasn't sure how this continuation would work to a new game, but it's been pretty seamless to be honest.

He's my best and probably only consistent deep threat aside from Jackson in my starting 5, so I need him to keep his shooting this high. Also, RL Ben seems to have caught up to the 2k Ben, which is something I like :)

Thanks for the comments. I'd like to sneak in but there's a few things my team still needs like more shooting, especially if Derrick keeps earning minutes above Omri. I could use a perimeter wing defender too.

Thanks, I'm feeling confident of working through at least 2 seasons, but hopefully 3 or 4 ultimately.

I like Derrick a lot, and he is still pretty young. No way anybody's going to give him the $6-7M his rookie deal is paying, so it's possible I could consider keeping him around after this season for energy and athleticism off my bench. RL Derrick just isn't 100% engaged a lot of the time, which would certainly help him keep his career going.

Kings hope to improve bench with the first trade of the NBA season

The Sacramento Kings have been one of the surprising teams early this season playing .500 basketball and considered a possible threat for the 8th seed come playoff time. But in the team's recent games their defense has been very poor, especially when Demarcus Cousins and John Henson are on the bench. The Kings' bench unit could also use an additional ball-handler to support second-year guard Ray McCallum. The Kings tried to address these needs in exchange for two players closer to the far end of their bench.

Sacramento Kings trade: Jason Thompson (74) - Allen Crabbe (69)

ImageImage

Milwaukee Bucks trade: Jerryd Bayless (74) - Zaza Pachulia (68) - 2015 2nd Round Draft Selection

ImageImage

Despite his tenure with the team, his versatility, and his durability, Jason Thompson found himself down on the Kings' rotation this season. A healthy Carl Landry provides bench scoring and can play next to either Demarcus Cousins or John Henson. Henson can play center adequately enough, especially in today's NBA. The Kings primary use a 3-big rotation of Cousins, Henson, and Landry, leaving few consistent minutes for anyone else up front. Thompson is still a reliable bigman and undeniably deserves more than what the Kings were giving him this year. His DNP in the OKC blowout was an example of his low standing in the rotation. Even despite the significant garbage time in the Kings' loss to the Thunder, Thompson remained on the bench in favor of Quincy Acy and Eric Moreland. Considering JT's unhappiness with his role and the league-wide appeal of a reliable and durable player that can play either of the frontcourt positions, trading him is a clear choice for Sacramento.

Allen Crabbe started the season behind high draft selections Ben McLemore and Nik Stauskas in Sacramento and played a total of 4 minutes prior to last Thursday's game. Considering Stauskas' rookie struggles and the work Crabbe has done in practice, the Kings gave Crabbe some extended minutes against the Rockets. But those excuses barely concealed what was likely the real purpose of Crabbe's increased minutes in three straight games against Houston, Detroit, and Oklahoma City. In the blowout loss, Crabbe played 19 minutes against the Thunder and scored in double figures for his third straight game. Showcasing his spot-up talents as well as his newly-developing handle and ability to create off the bounce, Crabbe averaged 11.3 PPG on 54% shooting and 57% (8/14) from downtown in 15 MPG in those three contests. Despite his improvements, the Kings still don't have the minutes to develop the California product with their lottery selections sitting ahead of him at the 2 position.

The Bucks added Jerryd Bayless to their backcourt this offseason for cheap, but even his 2yr/$6M contract is too much when he doesn't play. He has not played in any of the Bucks' 27 games this season. Nate Wolters and Kendall Marshall are both younger guards who can offer more to Milwaukee with their development than Bayless could as a journeyman. At 26, Bayless has already bounced around the league significantly, Milwaukee being his 7th team in as many seasons. With no long-term interest in Bayless, the Bucks find it easy to make him available.

Zaza Pachulia has enjoyed a lengthy NBA career, primarily as a backup center. But he has struggled with injuries recently and is now considered to be on the speedy decline. At an old 30, Pachulia likely isn't going to get much healthier as time goes on. Owed $10.4M for of the next two seasons, the risk of Zaza becoming dead money is high for the Bucks and make the team keen on trading away the Republic of Georgia native.

The Kings get a veteran backup center who can play solid defense when healthy. Thompson is the superior player to Pachulia at this point, but with the Kings' current 3-big rotation their 4th frontcourt player doesn't need to be exceptional. Sacramento might also find more minutes for Quincy Acy whom they are high on. Adding Bayless in place of Crabbe gives the Kings more handling in their backcourt, with three of their five guards now being adequate ball-handlers and playmakers. The draft pick is a good acquisition for the Kings, who only had the Thunder's late 1st rounder this year after their own 1st round selection will be made by the Bulls.

The Bucks shed almost $2M in salary in the deal, except Thompson's contract runs for 3 years instead of the 2 years left for Pachulia and Bayless. Thompson is two years younger than Pachulia however and has been incredibly durable over his career. Crabbe took advantage of the Kings' showcasing and now comes to Milwaukee with a good situation personally. O.J. Mayo has had an up-and-down career thus far and Ray Allen is obviously at the end of his career. Crabbe can join another young team on its way up (in the weaker conference as well) and have the priceless opportunity to learn from a Hall-of-Famer in Allen for a year. In exchange for taking the contract of Pachulia and getting a potentially adequate 2-guard in the future, their 2nd round draft pick was a trade sweetener that the Bucks can swallow losing.

Not a bad trade, I like it. (Y)

That loss against the Bucks looks really rough, yet the way Parker played, I am not too surprised.

Another pretty realistic trade, i have always being a fan of ZaZa hes a good solid center but JT could also be one for the future.

Bayless is instant offence that you cant go wrong with (Y)

Not a fan of the trade, I think Thompson was a good option off the bench. But nice job getting the pick

Liking the way you post the simmed games (just the scores and top performers), I might do that sometime. That would help me a lot, but you know me

Yeah, I've been really inconsistent when I play the games. Some days I'm easily beating Houston, then get abused by OKC both games or lose to a team like Milwaukee. I didn't understand Jabari's 1-6 free throw shooting either

Realism the whole point, and not take advantage of the CPU trading logic too much.
Bayless has been a nice surprise for me in the games I've played since the trade. I thought for sure I'd be chaining him to the bench behind RayMac, but the choice won't be so easy :)

I felt like I needed to make a decision between Landry and Thompson and could really only keep one around long-term. I actually preferred to move Carl and spend a decent amount of time looking for realistic Landry trades, but he had less value than JT. The pick is really what I wanted in the end, and should be almost as good as OKC's #1 and land in the early 30s. I had the pick in my last association anyway along with Henson in exchange for my 1st rounder (Stauskas), but since I kept Nik I couldn't push things too far.

I do have a center prospect in my fictional draft class I like, and a FA target in mind as well in case Zaza doesn't work out well or gets hurt.

Suns accept realities, trade Dragic to continue rebuild

Phoenix Suns trade: Goran Dragic
Orlando Magic trade: Kyle O'Quinn, 2015 1st Round Draft Selection

After an outstanding season in which they missed the playoffs by a razor's edge, the Phoenix Suns came into this year with expectations to make another run at the postseason. Yet things haven't gone as well as they had hoped this season. The Suns are 11-20 and fighting to just stay ahead of the Pelicans and Lakers and avoid being last in the Western Conference. In the hotly contested West, the Suns seemed to accept the fact that last year was more of a fluke than a sign of things to come. Following their poor start, they sent Goran Dragic to Orlando in exchange for Kyle O'Quinn and another 1st rounder. Dragic has a player option this offseason and is due a major pay raise. Considering the Suns' disappointing season, Phoenix chose to avoid a risky free agency for their star guard and cashed in now. The Suns now have three picks in the 2015 draft (PHX, LAL, ORL), likely all lottery picks depending on how much Dragic helps the Magic.

Orlando decided they have enough young talent already, with 7 quality players under the age of 25 (Vucevic, Harris, Oladipo, Gordon, Harkless, Payton, Fournier). Another lottery pick and another year of selling hope seem to be unacceptable in the Magic Kingdom and the team is in win-now mode. In the weaker Eastern Conference it is easier for a team to sneak into the postseason and the Magic are determined to do so. Vucevic, Oladipo, and Harris are already quality NBA starters and adding Dragic gives them a core for a potential playoff team. Another bonus is that last year's 10th overall pick Elfrid Payton can learn from a guard as good as Dragic. A successful postseason berth will likely be enough for the Magic to convince Dragic to sign long-term, or at least opt in and give Orlando another year to prove their upward momentum.

Ben suffers pinched nerve, won't be 100% for at least a month

Image

The Sacramento Kings have announced that G Ben McLemore suffered a Pinched Nerve in his back in the Kings' 106-99 win over the Warriors on December 22nd. McLemore is not expected to miss any games for the Kings, and he played off of the bench in the team's games against the Suns, Knicks, Nets, and Celtics. The estimated recovery time for this kind of injury is 4-6 weeks. McLemore is averaging 12.5 PPG on 53% FG and 49% 3PT so far this season.

Nik Stauskas is expected to continue in the starting lineup temporarily as he did in Sacramento's previous four games. The Kings will also likely utilize both Ray McCallum and Jerryd Bayless in the backcourt rotation to reduce the minutes of McLemore.
