assuming the celts dont cancel the trade
When was the last time that happened?

This definitely tilts in the C's favor now. Jones isn't worth much at all. He's an athlete and that's about it. I know the Lakers are high on Sasha (have been for 2-3 years), but what if he doesn't pan out? It would've been to their advantage to keep two point guards of the future in case one of them becomes a bust.
BTW, I really, really hope we see some of this lineup this next year on the Lakers:
Odom (PG on offense, guarding SF or inferior wing player on defense), Kobe (guards PG on defense), Butler, Grant, Divac. Well maybe pull a player out of thin air and substitute him for Divac.

Mitch Cup Of Shit should eat shit & die.
He's a complete moron and makes Danny look like a genius.

We've got the only GM in the league that would get burnt in a trade with Danny fucking Ainge... twice!
Sun Aug 15, 2004 2:03 am
i just wonder why the lakers want payton out of town so bad. seems like they are willing to give away alot just to trade him. i really think he could have fit in well with the new lakers but i will be glad to see him in boston for a year.

its certainly no easy task, you really have to want to get burnt by danny ainge if its gona happen. so now ainge has a pg to tutor banks, who mentioned how he's a life long lakers fan and never liked the celts (whoops), though i dont know if "I Want the Ball" aka Gary Payton will help that cause.....anyways, i look at it as 3 benchies for cap space and a 1st, so it's all good by me...

he was still traded to the celtics. that only says he failed to report so they changed the trade a bit so the celts would not cancel it. now the trade is even better for the celts.
Sun Aug 15, 2004 8:04 am
I CANT FREAKING BELIEVE THIS!!!!
What the hell is wrong with Mitch Kupchak! Let the Celtics cancel the freaking deal. Who the heck do we get?? Chris Mihm? WTH! We're giving them a future first for WHAT exactly? What the HELL!!
Sun Aug 15, 2004 8:06 am
And the heck is going to be our freaking point guard? I hope Kupchak has a stroke. This trade is too boneheaded to be made by an NBA executive. If Shaq hadn't showed up for a Physical would we have sent Lamar Odom back??

i'm sorry i dont have a link to this, but i read it on another board that had a link to something that was insider sign up stuff.... anyways payton said if he was not traded to the clippers, houston, or minnesota he would retire. he said no disrespect to boston, but he doesnt want to have to move his family across the country.....i'll see if i can find where i read this and get the actual quotes....

Back in the mid 90s it happened a couple of times. The Pistons and Rockets had agreed to trade Sean Elliott and Robert Horry, but Elliott failed a physical and the trade was cancelled.
The Celtics also traded Dino Radja to Philadelphia for Clarence Weatherspoon (and someone else, I believe) but Radja failed the physical and the deal was nixed. Utah attempted to trade Greg Foster during the 1998 season but someone in the deal refused to report so the trade was cancelled. And I believe a similar situation arose with Rony Seikaly the same season.
So it does happen every now and then.
Sun Aug 15, 2004 12:43 pm
Well if you have the right to not report to a team when they trade you, then maybe Steve Francis should've did it if he wanted to stay in Houston so bad
Sun Aug 15, 2004 12:48 pm
i hope they dont cancel trade even if payton does retire. the point of getting him is to clear cap space. so finalize the deal, let him and fox retire, have cap space for next season, and a draft pick to boot. oh and if that aint enough we got to keep our point guard too.payton or no payton i hope the celts continue this trade.

I do feel sorry for Payton as a Lakerfan. Many Lakerfans are upset at him because he didnt checked himself in, but Im not. I would react the same or even worse, its just like blaming a skunk for stinking....Mitch made a bad decision by making this trade without contacting with Payton first, I support Payton 100% on this one as a Lakerfan. He might didnt have the season that we all expected from Gary Payton, but that does not make him a Jannero Pargo class player. He took a paycut to play for the Lakers and I was honored that he gave up money to join a winning team, and now he is thrown away like trash, a big FU to Mitch.
When the 1st trade happend for Marcus Banks I was quite excited, hes a good defender and ranks among the fastest players in the league, which can be very usefull in the running game the Lakers will have, and also against the San Antonio Spurs who have Tony Parker whos not that slow either. But no, Mitch had to give up on him AND a future second round pick. Afterall, he gave up a player he wanted the most since the draft, I dont see the logic in this trade, and specially not now that the Lakers added another Small Forward on their roster next to Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Devean George and Luke Walton. I not taking anything away from Jumaine Jones, hes a good player. But Marcus Banks would have been so much more usefull.
BUT, Im giving Mitch another chance....there is just no way he did that without a logical reason, I myself believe there will be another trade coming up sooner or later which might envolve any small forward on the team and specially Caron Butler. This is not done yet.
Sun Aug 15, 2004 1:51 pm
i would have to agree with you there. i see another trade in the lakers future. not sure if i will see it before the season starts but i am sure i will see it.
Sun Aug 15, 2004 10:43 pm
I agree with most, except the part where you say that Jumaine Jones is a good player
Darn.. this is going to look bad on Payton's resume... traded for crap near the end of his career. If I were him I'd ask the HOF to not put that below his name.
Mon Aug 16, 2004 2:41 am
Actually, you are right....hes not a good player. I think he was pretty good in his Cleveland days, but since then he started to suck.
Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:17 am
since then he started not to get playing time
as for gary payton, i understand why he doesnt want to come to boston, as he doesnt want to move his family all the way across the US, but he's in the NBA he has to deal with shit like that. The fact that he's old now just gives him the bargaining chip of "if you dont trade me i'll retire", because i'm sure if payton were 29 and still had much of his career ahead of him he'd deal with the fact that he got traded to a team on the other side of america. anyways as for the celts getting cap space, well, you can kiss that good bye. even with payton and fox expiring, we'll still be over the cap most likely next year thanks to bakers buy out/lafrentz's massive contract, it does help to avoid the luxury tax how ever....

Just remember the reason why he signed with LA, not because he sucked, he wanted a ring. More than money, he wanted a ring. I think the ring plays a big factor in him not wanting to play in Boston, but that's just what I think...
Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:31 am
kupchak really fucked payton, malone, and shaq over. payton took a pretty big pay cut to play in LA, and now they're sending him to boston after just a year(!!!) If he had wanted to play in boston he would've signed with them at max last year. What a loyal organization the lakers are.....
Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:36 am
Meh, you forgot to mention how stupid & idiotic Cupshit is. Hellow, Malone & Payton came to LA for who? Ok.
Meh, he's a moron. He did everthing to keep Bryant, even if that meant insulting players like Malone, Payton & O'Neal.
Mon Aug 16, 2004 7:21 am
On a phone interview earlier, Payton reported that he was going to retire before reporting to Bosotn. He quoted "I wasn't going to Boston to take a physical. I ain't going to move my family no more. I can't take my family to Boston. It ain't no disrespect to Boston."
So looks like both teams got fucked on this trade. Lakers didn't get Banks and Boston didn't get Payton. The Lakers really got fucked because they tried to trade Payton instead of keeping him and now he isn't going to play for nobody.

if he wanted a ring so bad he wouldnt have resigned with the lakers this year...

I think he either wanted to play for a contender or play in L.A., where his family was about to settle. The Celtics didn't fit into either category.
