C Duncan/Miller
PF K Mart/Rasheed/Odom
SF Artest/Prince
SG Iverson/Redd/Barry
PG Billups/Wade
In that case I'd have Shaq/Malone/Fox/Kobe/Payton.
If people miss the irony in that joke please hurt yourself.
Mine would be-
C-
Time Duncan (obvious reasons)
Shawn Bradley (international guys aren't used to 7'6 people who can defend)
PF-
Kenyon Martin (just a spark plug really, would block a few shots into the stands)
Antoine Walker (as the Sports Guy wrote, he WANTS to play for the USA, I don't think he'd let anyone down)
Amare Stoudemire (you've got to have him somewhere I guess)
SF-
LeBron James (he can play SF, and he's been good enough this season to get picked)
Tayshaun Prince (one of the best defenders in the league)
SG-
Michael Redd (reasons already mentioned)
Rip Hamilton (good mid range shooter)
PG-
Kirk Hinrich (I think he'd be fantastic against International teams)
Mark Jackson (what? He's a veteran who could still be good for 10mpg in the Olympics)
Jalen Rose (LeBron and Jalen can play PG, how many matchup problems would that cause?)
Those aren't necessarily the starters, and there's too many guys but that's who I'd have. I do realize Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony are missing. That was deliberate.

Lol... you forgot devean george and derek fisher jae...
I'd have the current team but take off wade and put michael redd
Fri Aug 06, 2004 8:04 pm
Duncan / Okafor
Stoudamire / Odom
Lebron James / Carmelo / Marion
Michael Redd / Miller / Voshon Lenard
Iverson / Wade

You've got to be kidding. Prince one of the best defenders? Just because he's got long arms and plays with two wallaces behind him doesn't mean he's one of the best defenders. Bradley? There's a reason he doesn't get any PT in Dallas. Yikes. Jalen Rose at the point? Rose is not a natural playmaker. That's what they need. Antoine Walker? ? ? Poor shot selection, probably won't mesh with the team. Mark Jackson ? ? ? Too slow, can't shoot, can't defend, too old...
Fri Aug 06, 2004 9:30 pm
hasn't Bradley played for the german team before? i think he was born in germany
and Hamilton rejected the offer
I like what Jae suggested with Lebron and Rose. Either could bring the ball up, obviously James would be the primary playmaker. Don't knock Bradley, he could block shots and he's got a good mid range jump shot if you've seen him play. Mark Jackson would be an allrite choice too, a veteran leader
Hinrich would be good as well...but i chose Billups cos he's Finals MVP baby! nah, he can shoot the 3 and torch guys off the dribble. He'd love playing against the zone and he's also made heaps of crunch time shots, something that could be very important

I'd rather have the whole Pistons team play the Olympics after seeing those two horrible exhibition games from USA...

You don't actually watch basketball do you.

Have you actually seen the last 3 exhibition games... I have.
Why would you want to select Shawn Bradley. Sure he's going to block some shots. But this US team won't get killed inside, but from the outside. Larry Brown knows how to play get his players to play defense, he'll get the players to play tough inside. Young potential players like Okafor (who's a great defensive player already), and players like Stoudamire, who will actually impact the game from the offensive end as well, are better choices even though they lack size.
Mark Jackson had a nice career. Sure he makes some pretty passes. But what do you actually think the US needs against quick international guards that can shoot and drive, play the pick and roll efficiently and shoot some more. Jackson has at least one foot in retirement do you really think he's going to be effective running after quicker guards that are going to shoot the daylights out of him. And on offense he's not going to be very effective against zone defenses. He's not a exactly an accurate 3 point shooter either, now is he.
You picked someone for his passing ability and somebody for his size...why don't we bring back Muggsy Bogues. he can pass and he can run loops under Yao Mings legs. Yeah that's it.
Prince isn't that bad a choice but his defensive abilities are overrated in my opinion.
Antoine Walker, he plays well if he's the star of the team, or co-star for that matter. But I think Larry Brown will prefer players that will play well in his system. Walker isn't great defensively, and his shotselection is very poor. Where is he going to fit in.
Jalen Rose... he's not outstanding in any aspect. He's a good player, but there are better players to pick from. Having Lebron James abusing smaller defenders is good enough.

I haven't seen any of the exhibitions, I just picked the team based on who I would've chosen before the Olympics... and as far as Mark Jackson goes, I didn't pick him to play for 30 mpg, I just thought it'd be nice to have some veteran leadership around for the other guys who'd play PG (Hinrich, Rose, James etc)...

Er... no... I picked Bradley because he's a defensive presence, you'd know this if you saw more Mavericks games I suppose... and Jackson, how many more times do I have to say "veteran presence"?
Jalen Rose... he's not outstanding in any aspect. He's a good player, but there are better players to pick from. Having Lebron James abusing smaller defenders is good enough.
Watch some games from other leagues and you'll understand Roses' inclusion...

Wow, I'm surprised VC has been left out, how quickly we forget that if VC didn't do what he did in Sydney, the US team would not have gotten the gold.

How effective do you think Mark Jackson's veteran presence is going to be. Ofcourse he wouldn't get much minutes, but even the minutes that he would get he wouldn't be as effective as other players. And just going by his presence, Mark Jackson hasn't got any international experience that I know of, he played a different type of game in the nba, it would be a totally new experience for him as well. Can he ever be really contributing that much to the team? His veteran presence isn't really going to be benefit the team greatly. It's nice to have him on an nba team for his veteran presence , but for a team full of stars that will be together for a couple of weeks?
Shawn is a defensive presence because of his size. And he uses his length very well on the defensive end. He's not a smart offensive player. Good for him that he can hit a jumper, and thats all he can do with his size on that end. There are more useful players to make up a better team.
I've seen Rose and Bradley play numerous times. Still think they are bad choices.

he said people who didn't turn down invites. KG, Kidd, JO, Rip, ect. They all turned down invites.

Okafor might be a good player but this is international basketball. He won't have time to adjust like he will in the NBA....somebody on team USA will play shockingly and will ride the bench. Too many young guys not enough experience
Sat Aug 07, 2004 12:33 pm
Emeka might be more ready for this than amare. College ball is more similar to international basketball than what the nba is.

I'm getting the impression 90% of people in this thread haven't actually seen a league outside of the NBA...

This USA team would be all about having toughness, leadership and teamwork. Magloire and Miller would be hard workers on the boards for the USA. Duncan will have his MVP type leadership then you have the athleticism of Amare and rebounding of Boozer. You have more toughness from Artest and Carmelo is a great scorer. Redd is the sharp shooter, something the current USA team doesn't have. Battier shows on and off the court leadership and would represent the team well. Iverson would be the floor general for the team. Cassell has the veteran leadership. I think Billups declined an invitation for the USA squad so I'm not sure what to say about him. So I would put Lebron in at his spot.
Sat Aug 07, 2004 3:08 pm
Battier? That's your grizzlie fan talking.
