The Seattle SuperSonics have acquired forward Danny Fortson from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for center Calvin Booth, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced.
A 6-8 forward out of the University of Cincinnati, Fortson averaged 3.9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 56 games with the Mavericks last season.
"We're very happy to have Danny on board as part of our front court." said Sund. "In an effort to improve our rebounding, the addition of Danny, coinciding with Nick Collison returning from his injury, will enhance our physical toughness and defense. Ever since Danny came into the league he has been among the league leaders in rebounds per minute. His rebounding skills will help us tremendously."
Fortson, a seven-year veteran, has averaged 8.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in 341 NBA career games, including two seasons where he averaged double figures in both points and rebounds. Fortson ranked fourth in the league in rebounds per game during the 1998-99 (11.6) and 2001-02 (11.7) seasons.
Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round (10th pick overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft, Fortson was traded to Denver on draft day along with Johnny Newman and Joe Wolf for Ervin Johnson.
Booth, a five-year veteran, signed with the Sonics as a free agent on Aug. 16, 2001. He averaged 4.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.11 blocks in 133 career games with the Sonics. Originally selected by the Washington Wizards in the second round (35th pick overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft, Booth posted career averages of 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.37 blocks in 199 NBA games.
Booth actually played half decent last year, but I don't see why Dallas would want to take on his contract. Maybe they expect to get better D from him than Fortson gave them last year.

Booth is also taller than Fortson which will make him more of a center than Fortson. I think it's pretty good for both teams.

Hehehe, Cuban must be sighing with relief. Finally a big-man. Even if it is Booth.
Not a bad trade, Cuban is willing to pay anything for Dallas to succeed, he feels he needs size, he's got size. He's willing to pay, let the man pay.
Seattle got one heck of a rebounder in Fortson, even if he is under-sized.

Booth and Fortson have nearly identical contracts, expire in the same year (3 more years including this upcoming season) and make essentially the same amount. Good deal for both teams, more play development time for Swift, get a rich man's Reggie Evans for the Sonics. For the mavs, they get a center finally who can block shots.

finally? shawn bradley? booth was on dallas before
Tue Jul 27, 2004 8:50 am
Heheh Calvin Booth hit that game winning layup against the jazz in game 5 in 2001... this trade is virtually meaningless
Tue Jul 27, 2004 11:16 am
Booth is taller, but Fortson isn't too bad playing at centre despite his height. I don't know if I'd swap Fortson's abilities for Booth's height, especially since Booth was somewhat overrated after the 2001 playoffs.

Someone he can start and make him go bang-bang against other "centers".
You want to make Shawn Bradley go bang-bang?

he's talking about finding someone who can block shots when all along bradley's been there. i don't see anywhere any mention of "bang bang"
nice try though

Shawn Bradley's a defensive menace the Mavs should have him on the floor more
Tue Jul 27, 2004 4:52 pm
Have you seen a lot of Mavs games?
He is slow, no offense, bad knowledge of the game, bad defense except he's tall and can block.
Tue Jul 27, 2004 9:52 pm
Shawn Bradley is a good shot blocker, and not just because he's 7'6". Obviously his size is a great advantage, but he utilises that advantage very effectively. Compare Bradley's numbers to Yao Ming's and you'll notice that Bradley averages 1.12 bpg to Yao's 1.9 bpg in a little over a third of the playing time. That's an average of 4.59 blocks per 48 minutes to 2.78 blocker per 48 minutes for Yao.

I think this is a good trade for Seattle, I've always liked Fortson, and here's why...
98-99 50 games played, 11ppg, 11rpg in 28mpg
00-01 6 games played, 16ppg, 16rpg in 33mpg
01-02 77 games played, 11ppg, 11rpg in 28mpg
Besides the fact that he's pretty injury prone, this guy can easily be a 12/10 player in the NBA. If he can stay healthy and gets some decent minutes I think he'll be alot more effective in Seattle than Booth will be in Dallas.

Woops, my bad. I thought you were referring to this comment of mine:Finally a big-man. Even if it is Booth.
Apologies.

excatly what I was gonna say. Booth is tall... that's it. I'm surprised Seattle finally found someone to take the contract out of their hands, and in my opinion, they got the better deal. Fortson is a great rebounder.

I know Booth was on DAL before, but you got me. Bradley can block shots, but Booth can play. Bradley can't, I meant that (shotblocker who can play), didn't say it, my bad.

Seattle already had the young Fortson, Reggie Evans...
Fortson is a bad defender... He rebounds a lot but is undersized and a woeful defender...

cuban's an idiot, maybe he should've resigned steve nash instead of some average player who really doesnt tip the scales in their favor in the killer west. Seriously, steve nash was dallas's identity, I feel that next year whatever unity dallas once had will be nonexistent.

maybe you should have a look at cuban's blog about the whole steve nash situation. while you may still think he's an idiot, at least you get to hear his side of the story. he didn't choose "some average player who really doesn't..." over nash btw

nash retorted to cubans blog by saying that cuban left out a lot of what really happened. he said - she said, and in this case, given my personal opinion of the two, i'd have to side with nash. cubans an idiot, he might as well throw away the rest of the team, they have no chance in the west now.
