this tutorial is very basic and every new modder should be able to pick it up right away.
take any front facing picture of a ball off of the internet. in this case i used this one
Image
you want to make sure that you have a template for the basketball outline already. if you done i have uploaded one.
make sure you get rid of everything in the picture except the actual basketball you want to use. By the end of the processes you should have something like this Image
most of the time basketballs wont work and you'll have to edit manually like the Nike elite ball. the lines are to spread apart for the game to comprehend.
Image (ignore the messed up wording. that happened while i was first editing the photo at like 3 am.)
in game:
Image
so go back into gimp or in my case photoshop and re-arrange it to match the lines in the template
Image
now all you need to do is make the green texture and your good to go!
final previews of the balls:

Image
post your outcomes down below!

For green normal map
----------------------------------------------------------------
In photoshop take your regular texture
Image
then resize it to 512 x 256 (or whatever you need)

Next select Filter > Nvidia tools > Normal Map Filter
Image

A menu will appear, apply these settings
(Play around with these to get desired effect)
Image
press ok

texture will look purple
Image

to get green color go to channels and paint red and blue channels all black
Image

then click green channel, select all (ctrl+ A), copy, and paste it to the alpha layer
Image

now click on the RGB channel, it will now be green
Image

play around with contrast and diffrent effect to change how the ball looks in game

phpBB [video]

Note: I did NOT follow one of the most important instructions. You HAVE to reorder the image to match the template. I didn't do that because it was 2 am and i had things i wanted to do before i fell asleep.

you have to cut it up and re arange it in a way that matches with the template, then in photoshop use the spot healing tool to fix the texture.
