What's So Good About Cleveland?

Image

Game: NBA 2K13
Platform: PC
Difficulty: Superstar
Quarters: 9 minutes played, 12 minutes simulated
Game type: Simulation (default sliders)
Draft: Auto-Generated (2013), egodynasty08's 2013 Draft Class (2014), TBA.

Why Cleveland?

I always wanted my next big challenge after TNL to be an Eastern Conference team, and the post-LeBron Cavaliers have always intrigued me. They have the next big star in Kyrie Irving, a fringe All-Star big in Anderson Varejao and some other interesting prospects such as Dion Waiters and Tristan Thompson.

Since I began the Association straight after Game 3 of the NBA Finals (Spurs won the series in 6 :D ), I couldn't get the 2013 Draft Class straight away, but I will incorporate them in 2014.

Shoutouts to Leftos and Lamrock for inspiring this, as well as the other regulars in my TNL thread.

Free Agent Clearout: Six Players Leave Cleveland

New GM Kenny Young wasted no time in implementing changes in the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise, telling five players from the 12-13 squad that he won't be offering them contracts. Amongst the players to be shown the door was Cleveland main-stay Daniel Gibson, who was drafted back in 2006 and spent all seven seasons of his career so far with the franchise.

'It was a tough decision,' Young said. 'Daniel's been a valued member of the Cavaliers for a long time and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.'

As well as Gibson, Omri Casspi, Wayne Ellington, Luke Walton and Chris Quinn also need to look for new teams, while Shaun Livingston decided he wanted to test out the free agency.

Draft 2013

phpBB [video]

Please note: you don’t have to view this. I just figured this to be an easy way to get draft coverage, since it’s not a particular strength of mine.

Rookies Sign Contracts

Chuck Shaw and Cesar De La Cruz both signed their first contracts of their NBA careers. Shaw signed a 2 year deal worth approximately 7 million, while De La Cruz inked a one-year contract.

Chuck Shaw was taken 3rd overall in the draft out of Valparaiso. The 20 year old small forward will be a serious contender to take Alonzo Gee’s starting spot.

Cesar De La Cruz was taken 33rd overall out of Argentina. De La Cruz was projected to go undrafted, but a need to add depth in the centre position made the 7'3 prospect a more viable option.

Coming up next: Who will Cleveland pick up in the free agency? And what will the line-up look like for opening night?

#thierry, So far it's been fun just micro-managing the team. I hope I portray this as interesting as I find it :)

Phil89, There's something entertaining about taking on a project team. The Cavs actually have a legit star as well, so that is kind of a head-start in a way. And yeah, one of the few things NBA Live 10 has over this game is the generates with bad facial hair :P

Dmastawwe, Good to hear (y), I hope I can make this a good one.

Cleveland's Free Agency

Redick Signs for Two

The Cleveland Cavaliers added combo guard J.J. Redick to their line-up, as he signed a two year deal, which includes a third year player option.

Redick will hopefully provide much needed leadership to the Cavaliers' second unit.

NBA Champion Heads to Cleveland

After recently winning a championship ring with the San Antonio Spurs, veteran guard Tracy McGrady has signed a one year deal with the Cavs. McGrady saw little playing time during the post-season, but could potentially see more in the 13-14 season, as the Cavs are light on guards.

Villanueva to Join Cavaliers

Former Pistons power forward Charlie Villanueva signed a two year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which includes a third year player option.

While it's unlikely that he'll be a regular part of the power forward rotation, he gives the Cavaliers additional depth to the position behind Tristan Thompson and Marreese Speights.

You ridiculous, ridiculous bastard. I just came here to jokingly bring up that what really inspired you was seeing Villanueva get hot in the final minutes of the live-stream after joking about it for the whole game, and I come here only to see you actually signed him.

Okay. I'm in. I'm interested.

That's the reason I chose to do a Wizards association. A backcourt of Wall and Beal already there and probable high draft picks in the first couple of years. I went a bit aggressive in my trading though and probably cut a couple of years off my development time (I have no self restraint at all when it comes to trades)

I like the balance of youth and veterans you've got here and I like Kyrie a lot.

Did you have much cap room to spend during the off-season or were you focussing on a future free agent class? Also, are you planning on building through the draft/free agents/own development/mixture?

Good luck for the season ahead. (Y)

Mavericks' Scary Halloween Performance, Blowout the Cavs

Image
Redick was impressive in his first game for Cleveland

The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped their opening game, losing against the Mavericks by 110-89.

O.J. Mayo was the performer of the game, scoring 27 points. Dirk also showed signs that he is ready for another all-star season, scoring 19 points off 9-14 shooting. Roddy Beaubois (16), Chris Kaman (14) and Shawn Marion (10) all had productive nights on the offensive end, as the Mavericks had a well-balanced offense.

For the Cavaliers, new recruit JJ Redick made an immediate impact, scoring 20 points in his 6th man role. Kyrie Irving was 4 rebounds away from a triple-double, with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists. Tristan Thompson (12), Anderson Varejao (11) and Dion Waiters (11) contributed on the offensive end as well.

While Cleveland had a good variety of scorers, ball control and fast-break points were the main issue of the night. They committed 13 turnovers, which led to 22 fast-break points by the Dallas Mavericks.

Cleveland's next game is on the road against the Golden State Warriors.

Former Cavaliers forward Luke Walton has called it a day. Lack of interest by other teams, along with decreased floor time were factors in his decision.

Phil89, Cleveland had a bunch of cap room during free agency. I could have easily gone after Dwight Howard or Chris Paul (I actually saw him go to Cleveland in my Creating a Legend game), but I like the idea of making Kyrie the centrepiece and giving him solid role players to work with. Although, if LeBron opts out of his contract with the Heat, I'll be really tempted to throw some money towards him.

Cool. I like the idea of making stars instead of trading for or signing them in free agency. More satisfying I guess. Just have to hope that you keep them happy enough that they stick around once their contract is up.

Seeing Dwight sign with Milwaukee reminded me of Derrick Rose doing the same thing on my old Live 10 dynasty. They must have something in the water up there.

Tough opening game. At least Kyrie and Redick played well though, that's something positive.

Phil89, I agree. Washington and Cleveland are similar in the sense that they have two guards that are young and have a lot of potential (although, in real life, I'm not sold on Dion Waiters). It's definitely more satisfying seeing them come through the ranks.

In my Live 10 dynasty, the Bucks ended up with Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin, so the AI counterpart seems to be doing a good job for the franchise. Much better than the contract they're willing to give Monta Ellis anyway.

Dmastawwe, I really like their signing of Jarrett Jack. I'm still not sure how their rotation is going. I'd be tempted to start Jack over Harris.

hova-, thanks man. I wasn't planning to do one, but I'm trying to find ways to kill time now I'm on a break for about 3 months. Loving Cleveland's core as well.

Andrew, at this point, I'd be happy to get them back into the playoffs. But I actually think my team is surprisingly deep. I particularly like Marreese Speights on the bench. I had him in a My Player mode and he's great value.

mp3, Cool :) I really like J.J. Redick. Don't tell anyone, but I'm a Duke fan

Aside from that though, I think he's a great 6th man candidate. He's a great shooter and can run the point well. It allows me to run a tight guard rotation with him, Irving and Waiters.

The X, I really like this team. It's nice to have a star straight off the bat. I hope this story can see a bit of success.

Just an update: Of all things to go wrong with my PC, my CPU finally died. Not an opportune time, since I really wanted to get some momentum with this thread. However, this PC seems to have the bare minimum to run the game (I mainly use it for word processing), and I've bought an IDE-to-USB adapter so I can access the files on the other hard drive. I'm hoping that will arrive this week sometime.

So with any luck, I can get back into this within the next few days :)
Worst case scenario, I'll do a reboot.
