Stern said Larry's wrong

Wed Jun 16, 2004 12:29 pm

I don't have a source other than my eyes and ears, but I'm watching halftime right now, and Stern just said Larry Bird is wrong when he says they need more white players.

He's right (stern is right about Larry being wrong). We don't need white superstars. I throw up looking at Kidd, I don't want another one.

i dont want the league to turn to a white sport no offense....just keep people coming and going, maybe we will get a few more white stars, maybe not. Its a game of skills, not race.

Frankly, race shouldn't matter. With the exception of fans who hurl racist comments, professional sport is the one aspect of our lives where we forget about colour and appreciate people for who they are and/or what they can do.

I forget about colour and appreciate people for who they are and/or what they can do in every aspect of my life.. not just professional sport.. I would hope that the majority of the world would be the same.. but i know that is probably not the case..

Colour and race do not matter to me at all, nor should they. I'll rephrase: It's one aspect of our lives where a lot of people who would normally have racist views forget about them and appreciate people for who they are and/or what they can do.

I think andrew was just generalising...and not speaking from a personal perspective. In this world (especially america) there is alot of racism..but it seems to negate whenever we deal in sports. It's "the one" place where cultures and races unite for something positive.

but white guys cant jump :?:

Wed Jun 16, 2004 2:19 pm

i personally dont really care about race, but more so nationality. For example if i were australian and an australian superstar came around i would for sure be rooting on his ass like monkeys on bananas, etc. etc.. whether he was black or white. I wouldnt go bonkers or anything or fanatic, but i'd of course probably be on his side.

hehehe, on another note, its funny because as soon as i came on the board policeman andrew was already around (you usually dont come around till later)........ is something special happening or something?

Of course I expected Stern to disagree with Bird - what else was he going to say?

Bird didn't say anything wrong - hell, I've heard black players say that. He acknowleged the greatness of black athletes and that basketball is a black man's game(he even said he got insulted when a white player was assigned to guard him). But more white superstars would get more white fans excited about the sport. In Kareem's autobiography Giant Steps, he writes it's easier for white fans to identify with Larry Bird than Magic Johnson. Let's tell it like it is - folks root for their own, whether it has to do with race or nationality. As a black man, I'm happy that Tiger Woods, Venus & Serena & Jarome Ignalia are excelling in predominately white sports. I appreciate Larry's honesty about human nature.

i don't care what kinda superstars we have as long as we have them. We only have black superstars now and that's cool, no probs

I never said it was his personal view. :? I know he was generalising :) I was just saying my personal view ... I guess I am not of the same view as what you believe the general population has then.. from your statement about "alot of racism" in the world.

Kidd isn't white, he's mixed.
We need good players in the league, black, white, purple, yelllow, green, whatever they are as long as we're getting good players.

hmm...does this matter? In few years you see that black guys can't shoot. How many Reggie Millers and Ray Allens do you hope to see if every black guy is working on being atlethic?

White men can't jump and black men can't shoot.

Stop the racism now! :?
