South Park: The Game Announced -- To Be A BEEPing Role Playing Game By Obsidian EntertainmentHoly Sh*t! THQ has announced that they're going to be collaborating with South Park Digital Studios and Obsidian Entertainment to create South Park: The Game. For reference, Obsidian are the masterminds behind famous RPGs like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords and Fallout: New Vegas.
According to the press release, South Park: The Game is to be, "an epic role-playing adventure that will allow the user to befriend Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny and explore the quiet little mountain town like never before." It's scheduled to release for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in late 2012.
Many years ago, I actually won a copy of South Park for the Nintendo 64. It had its moments, the cow rocket launcher was pretty amusing at first, but the novelty wore off after a while. Obviously they'd be working with better tech these days but I'm guessing the result may be the same.

I dunno, the depth of new vegas with a south park setting i'd certainly sign up for.

The thought is intriguing, but do you think they could really get that much depth out of a South Park themed RPG? I don't want to completely write it off of course, it certainly could be fun, but I'm not completely sold on the idea.

They could write a deep story where you go on an adventure... just encounter South park style humor and characters..

True. However, a lot of South Park's humour is topical and obviously one of its trademarks is a healthy dose of scatalogical/shock humour. That could wear thin the longer the game goes on. Still, if they break out a plot like the movie, it could work.

I wouldn't mind if it was more of an homage to 15 years of south park like episodes 200-201 were. I probably wouldnt buy it for 60 but when it hits the bargain bin i'd give it a look.

Also they could have mini-stories within the main story...like side missions, like each mission as an episode of their own

That'd be interesting too. The Simpsons Game that came out in 2007 was a little like that, on top of referencing a lot of video game staples and cliches. It was no Fallout: New Vegas, but it was a decent game in its own right, probably one of the better Simpsons games that have come out.

Is that saying much

But think about it.
Quest Hubs:
1. Hell
2. Denver
3. School
4. Starks Pond
5. Cow Days
6. Chinese Dodgeball tournament
Bosses:
1. Mr Jackson
2. Saddam
3. Mexican staring frog of southern sri lanka
4. Mecha Streisand
5. David Blaine
The lists could go on.

There are a lot of low cards in that hand.

I do have fond memories of Bart vs The Space Mutants and Bart vs the World on the NES, though everything the AVGN said about them was true. The Simpsons: Hit & Run was decent, certainly not great and of course the arcade game is a classic (if dated).
I agree there's definitely potential in a South Park game, the announcement has certainly captured my attention. These kind of licensed games don't always live up to the hype though.
Looking back:

Games based on comedy-based cartoons are usually pretty crap imo. There's a first time for everything though i suppose.

There will, for example, be five classes to select from: Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric and... Jew. "

Definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Probably should have read the first sentence:
While all eyes might be on the upcoming South Park RPG, fans of the series have something else to look forward to this year with upcoming Xbox Live Arcade exclusive South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge.

Looks alright, something to consider if you've got some spare MS points.

Any knowledge of whether this game is going to be like a full length title? Or more of a mini game type of stuff. Like can you get ~20 hours or so out of this RPG
Wed May 09, 2012 8:33 am
It's a full length Obsidian RPG.
