50 wins for a Franchise that never won 30 games before this season. Great season for this unexpected team. Nobody out of their mind would think the Grizzlies have a chance at the top 4 playoff positions in the west this season.
With this historic date in grizzlies history, no doubt Hubie Brown is coach of the year this year.
Cases can be made for the Jazz and Pacers, but the Jazz ain't competing as high as the Grizzlies are and the Pacers did have a decent squad already and just needed a more mature Ron Artest to show their stuff.
The nuggets did get some good pick ups with carmelo and andre miller and have overachieve, but again, not as over achieving as the Grizzlies have done. Oh and for the bucks fans, they in the east and east shouldn't get much respect seeing how bad the records are there.

A great effort by the Grizzlies to win 50 games and be among the West's top teams. Though they're still a little behind the Western Conference powers, I don't think they'll be swept rudely from the Playoffs.
Oh and for the bucks fans, they in the east and east shouldn't get much respect seeing how bad the records are there.
I don't completely agree with that. The Bucks made moves that should have seen them contend for the number one pick this offseason, not a playoff berth. The East may be weak with a few underachieving teams, but even the East the Bucks were expected to struggle.

What a season it has been. The 2 worst teams in the nba last year have won 40 or 30 games this year. The Grizzlies have 50 wins, Lebron surpasses the hype, and the Heat are 500. What's next?
It would be simply amazing if the grizzlies win the championship(which I doubt).

Phoenix will get their worst regular season record since '88.

have you seen what sloan has been working for most of the year? sloan has gotten so much out of so little...
harpring's been out for most of the year
unknowns/leftovers such as arroyo, lopez, mikki moore, raja bell, jason collins are playing big minutes.
on paper, memphis 2nd unit should run circles around the jazz starting 5

I would never have thought that Grizzlies could win 50 games. But I knew a lot of things would change thanx to Jerry West. Jerry West is a genius.
Fri Apr 09, 2004 5:41 am
yes, jerry sloan has done a excellent job with the jazz. A team full of unknown and bench players with only 1 decent player in AK47 for most of the season. Still though, Hubie Brown has turned the Grizzlies into contenders in the Western Conference and a team that the top teams in the west really don't want to face in the playoffs. They not going to die easily and could possibly pull off some upsets. He also helped turn Jason Williams into a great point guard instead of the flashy and inconistant player he was before. But considering that the Grizzlies are in front of one of the West big 5 (dallas) that should be something to consider.
both coaches probably deserve it, but seeing how consistand the grizzlies have been all year from their surprise start, to there first 50 win season im going to go with hubie on this
Fri Apr 09, 2004 7:18 am
yea hubie is coach of the year no doubt. i dont care what sloan has done because you have to look at what hubie had to do with a team full or new players, along with changing the styles they play. Utah has always been a good team so it still doesnt surprise me that much that they can make the playoffs. They still havent gotten into the playoffs yet anyway. If the Jazz had a good record like the Grizz, I would think Sloan would be COY, but Hubie is COY and will be COY. Jerry West will be executive of the year as well.
James Posey has been playing some of the best basketball in the league these past few weeks. In his last 5 games he has averaged 38 pts, 32 pts, 19 pts, 18 pts and 35 pts. He only shoots 9 shots every game. So that tells u that he isnt an Antoine Walker

but he gets the FT line alot and he hits a high percentages of his shots. Alot of people in Memphis thought signging Posey wasnt that good for the team to do good this season including myself

but it looks like Posey can be a star in this league. You always have to start out somewhere and start working your way up just like all the other stars have. Posey has the work potential to become a star in this league and I really feel he can do that.

unselfish players with mediocore talent, but good basketball iq are probably more valuable in my mind than talented players who demand the ball and are much better statistically, but arent superstars. thats why europeans and internationals are more in demand now than they were before -- they seem to be less stat-oriented and more team-oriented. it used to be college players that were blessed with that state of mind, but now they're leaving college earlier.
thats why teams like utah, memphis, san antonio, detroit and a couple more work. the players have bought into the system and are more interested in the team then themselves.
hubie brown should get coy because he turned a team around with no major transactions and more importantly made them a playoff bound team with a slight chance (better than no chance at all) of contending. a chance that will increase every year seeing that his team's nucleus is young. jerry west is smart, i think he'll let the majority of that team grow together.
sloan did a great job too, it can go either way.
Fri Apr 09, 2004 11:46 am
On
www.nba.com hubie brown leads the poll with 57%. I'm 99.9% sure that he will get COY.

I was at the last Vancouver home game.

I want them to come back.
Jerry Sloan is coach of the year for the same reasons crawford4MIP4real said. He got so much of out of so litte, and really got the team to work together. The Grizzlies looked good on paper before Hubie Brown, Heck in Vancouver they were won 20 games with Shareef, Mike Bibby, Dickerson, and a rookie Stromile. That team looked pretty good. But couldn't mesh. Both coaches did a great job of meshing their teams but Jerry Sloan made do with less players. And he is way overdue for a COTY.
Fri Apr 09, 2004 12:41 pm
the thing is, hubie came in as the coach after the grizzlies lost their first 8 games and he had to turn around that whole team without having a training camp. its not like sloan has just became the coach of the jazz. he has been with the same team for several years and he should know how to work with them more easier. hubie was with this team for some of the 02-03 season and the 03-04 season. if u look at how hubie turned around all his players and taught them not to complain about getting hardly an PT. he did so many things to a team that has a completely new look from last season just about. if you can get all those players to play together in the little time hubie had he should be COTY.

sbhzmafia wrote:he has been with the same team for several years and he should know how to work with them more easier.
Yea The Jazz of this year were the same team from last year. It's not that he was more used to them, he simply has less talent. I figured the Grizz would be 7-10th in the West before the season after last years promising finish, I thought (and so did everyone else) that Utah would be dead last. Look at the top players on the two teams.
Andrei Kirilenko - > Pau Gasol
Gordan Giricek - > Jason Williams
Carlos Arroyo - > James Posey
Raja Bell - > Bonzi Wells
Raul Lopez - > Shane Battier
Greg Ostertag - > Stromile Swift
Jarron Collins - > Earl Watson
If the two coaches switched Jerry Sloan would do a better job than Hubie considering how much he got out of players like Arroyo and Ostertag.
Fri Apr 09, 2004 3:04 pm
whoops dont forget mike miller
either way i dont care who says sloan is COTY

its going to be hubie regardless
Fri Apr 09, 2004 3:11 pm
sbhzmafia, you're so friggin biased.

This thread is toast, just move all posts from here on into the Kobe thread.
Edit: and oh yea, I also don't think the Jazz and the Grizzlies have different enough records to justify Hubie getting it. I figure if the Jazz can win 2 of their last 3 and get a winning record, Sloan deserves it definitley. The Jazz are playing vs. Houston, @ Minnesota, vs. Phoenix. That might be tough. But chances are the separation (9 games) remains the same since Memphis (uggh, I hate saying memphis, *goes to happy place* Vancouver...ahhh) has @ Lakers, @ Phoenix, @ Dallas, vs. Minnesota. If the Grizz get to 52 their lucky.
Anyways you're a die-hard why am I even bothering trying to convince you.

That's like you trying to convince me that the Suns will suck this much again next year.

gotta give it up for sbhzmafia. guess its hard not to be overly biased and drunk on grizz kool aid when you're the only memphis grizz fan in the forum
