Inserting Alpha Channels for Edited Jerseys

Postby eda on Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:40 am

I thought this might be useful for people.
Thanx to Lean I now know how to edit/insert jersey textures into the game. And thanx to him for sharing the tut with everyone.
Lean wrote:If you remember the 2k9 and 2k10 jerseys, they have this bitmap that only has four colors: black, red, green, and blue. Each color represents a specific texture to be added as an overlay to your jersey. This indicates which parts of the jersey has a cloth-like texture, shiny areas, holed areas, etc. Like this:
Image

They merged that file with the main bitmap in 2k11. Which kinda saved us the file size this time around.
When you do the main bitmaps for the jerseys, there's a fifth channel for it (RGB, Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha 1). The Alpha 1 channel is a grey-scale bitmap channel that does the same thing as the ur-colored bitmap of 2k9/2k10 does.

This is the main bitmap of the Suns jersey I released a few days ago:

Now this is how its Alpha channel looks like:

Though I'm not 100% sure how things work, this is just how I see what the colors on the Alpha channel are for:

White are for logos, giving it an embroidered look. The black areas have no lighting in-game. The light grey parts are for the main "cloth", just as how the black areas work in 2k9/2k10. The darker grey parts give it a shiny texture.
So this is how it looks like when imported to IFF Editor:

There you go.

I would like to know this also, can this green image just be cloned and filtered from the original image in photoshop? If so how? If not what is the best way to edit this file?

I had a texture from 2k9. :| Then I added the current mesh hole patterns in Photoshop for the green maps.

If you have opened the jersey file in IFF Editor (or any other applications that can open this), save the green image as a bitmap. Then open that bitmap in Photoshop and clean out any embossed logos. Apply yours and have it "embossed" the same way as well. Go to the Channels tab in Photoshop, hit CTRL+Click on the thumbnail for the "Green" channels and then create a new layer, then fill it with green. CTRL+A to select all of that new layer then CTRL+C to copy. Create a new document, paste that copied image in, and save it as a PNG. Re-import it back on IFF Editor, and that's it.

I'm actually planning on writing a full tutorial on jersey creation here for 2K11 but my sleep patterns are keeping my brain from working properly. :(

May you or anyone please explain what "embossed" means and can anyone translate these instructions for GIMP Users?

you need to replace one of the uh/ua 10XX iff files for the jersey to show up

logo10XX.iff are the logos for CATs that show up on the jerseys. in-game logos are located in the logos_small/medium/large iff files

it doesnt like being blank

create a "dummy" blank logo with a single pixel somewhere on it and it should fix it

Hi guys, sorry if i am using the wrong topic to post, but I'd like to ask you something: i created an alternate jersey for Seattle Sonics. I tried to import it using names such as ux562.iff, r1h562.iff or r1a562.iff and i don't see nothing changing inside the game. Only the 2 original jerseys white and green.
Is there a way to import more kits to my team? If yes, please tell me, how?
Thx in advance!!

jerseys are loaded by the roster so in the roster there needs to be a row saying use ux562.iff with these accessory colors for this team with other parameters.
