Postby Boyk on Sun Mar 28, 2004 10:46 pm

Has it ever happened, has there ever been a player off the bench that has made the all-star game??

Wasnt Chris Gatling a benchplayer during the 1996/97 season for the Dallas Mavericks?

If I remember correctly, the anouncer said something about him beeing a benchplayer during the All-Star Game, but Im not sure

That would be pretty weird for the coaches to vote on a bench player, unless his stats were outstanding.

Kobe was the only one that I remember, and it was only because of his popularity among the fans. I seem to remember three other Lakers on that West team.

Chris Gatling was selected as a replacement in the 1997 All-Star Game. Kobe of course made the All-Star Game in 1998 as a starter as his popularity soared during his rookie year and continued to grow throughout his second season. Kevin McHale also made the All-Star as a sixth man back in the 80s, though I believe he might have made most of his appearances after becoming a starter for the Celtics.

I've got a feeling there's others, but I'm not sure of any names at this juncture.

Very little. He was the sixth man, averaging around 15 ppg and providing fans with highlight reel plays. I don't remember many people having strong objections about him being in the game. I'm sure some people were opposed to him being there, but it was nothing like the anti-Kobe sentiment that exists today.

He did indeed, in 1992. Good memory. (Y)

Just a few words about Chris Gatling, who I think was an underestiamted player.

Actually, Gatling never started more than 10 games in one season, except in:
-92/93: 11
-93/94: 23
-94/95: 22
-97/98: 16

So we can say that he was used as a sixth man during all his career.

He was selected as a replacement in the Western all-star Team in 1997.
In this game, he had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal for 12 min on the floor.
The East won 132-120... and Glen Rice, who came from from the bench, was MVP !

The year Gatling was selected as an All-Star, he played 47 games and only started 1.
He averaged about 19 points and almost 8 rebounds for less than 30 minutes/game !!!

Danny Manning's stats were slightly better overall, so he was sixth man of the year. Alan Henderson was also deserving of the MIP as his stats were greatly improved across the board. A case could probably be made for Kobe winning those awards that year, but I'd say those players were just as deserving.

I'd agree. He'll never be mistaken for one of the all-time greats, but he was one of those solid role players who occasionally proved himself quite valuable to the team. His career numbers are fairly modest, but he had a couple of above average seasons.
