best draft ever

Postby magius on Sun Mar 28, 2004 10:45 am

i was just thinking how good this years draft was with the instant stars the likes of bron, melo and wade who can evolve into legit superstars and some really good players in bosh, hinrich and ford. and i cant forget milicic who can also become great one day. but is it the best ever? in a heartbeat no -- if bron and melo one day develop to historical proportions maybe. i thought it'd be interesting to list my top 5 greatest drafts ever (i mightve forgotten some players in the listings.... forgive me) :

1. 1984 - olajuwan, jordan, stockton, barkley. 4 of the greatest players in their positions ever (if not the greatest). enough said -- i think this as number one is undebatable. legit players alvin robertson and kevin willis were drafted as well. there have been deeper drafts, but none have produced 4 players of such proportions since. best players of this draft is a tie between the dream and mj.

2. 1996 - iverson, marbury, shareef, kobe, antoine walker, ray allen, stojakovic, jermaine o'neal, ilguascaz, steve nash just to name a few. this draft was incredibly deep and the higher tier players produced are/were very very very good. best players of this draft is a tie between starbury, iverson, kobe, maybe o'neal and maybe stojakovic.

3. 1987 - david robinson, pippen, reggie miller, horace grant, mark jackson. produced 2 bull central championship pieces and a couple of other great players. best player = tie between admiral and pip

4. 1999 - francis, brand, odom, baron davis, rip hamilton, marion, artest, kirilenko, scerzbiak, andre miller, terry. also a very good draft, i dont know how it'll withstand the test of time though....... best player = brand

5. 1985 - ewing, malone, dumars, mullin, terry porter. even if ewing and malone never won championships they're still pretty good  dumars and mullin and porter were great players as well. best player = dumars, ewing and malone very very close though.

there were 2 drafts that i wouldve listed if not for drastic injuries to their star players -- the 92 draft with zo and shaq.....2 great centres. spree and laetner and googs were also drated that year. googs was also injured.

the other draft i almost included but couldnt and that was the 94 one with glenn robinson, hill, kidd, eddie jones and jalen rose. if hill hadnt gotten injured this'd be serious consideration for #2.

interesting things i noticed is that present day drafts seem to be much deeper. some people think that old nba eras were more talented, i used to maybe agree, but now, in my opinion, i think that the talent differential was a lot larger, in otherwords, there were a lot more bad players making the good players seem better. i think nowadays the nba is talent rich and fans are just plain greedy :D

and we end this post with the most dissapoint draft ever (there have been more dissapointing ones, but i picked this one just because i want to  )

1995 - joe smith, mcdeyess, big country, stackhouse, rasheed wallace, damon stoudamire. this actually was a good draft with the likes ratliff, finley and best roudning out the first round and of course kg, but the higher picked players really dissapointed me -- they had more talent then what theyve become -- most are still good players though. i didnt say it was a bad draft, it just personally disapointed me that some of the players didnt reach their potentials. i guess kg makes up for it though.

My vote goes to the 96 draft, because they were so deep. Just wait until most of those players retire, and they will be in the hall of fame as well.

1984, 1985 and 1986 would probably be my top three.

'84 was great...but I'm leaning towards 96 as the best draft ever. Kobe, Iverson and Marbury are three Hall of Fame guys in the making...and other than that it produced 10 All-Stars and counting.

As far as the worst...it's looking pretty clearly like 2000.

Prolly 84 and 96 so far.

About the worst, well what happened to the rookie class of '93????
i think it had only 2 legit all-star players, anfernee hardaway and chris webber
dont flame if im worng, they are hte only 2 i really rememebr becoming anything.
Hunter isnt much and cheaney is a role player on the warriors.
i beleive hurley was in there but he had an accident or something.

The 1993 NBA Draft:

First Round
1. Chris Webber
2. Shawn Bradley
3. Anfernee Hardaway
4. Jamal Mashburn
5. Isaiah Rider
6. Calbert Cheaney
7. Bobby Hurley
8. Vin Baker
9. Rodney Rogers
10. Lindsey Hunter
11. Allan Houston
12. George Lynch
13. Terry Dehere
14. Scott Haskin
15. Doug Edwards
16. Rex Walters
17. Greg Graham
18. Luther Wright
19. Acie Earl
20. Scott Burrell
21. James Robinson
22. Chris Mills
23. Ervin Johnson
24. Sam Cassell
25. Corie Blount
26. Geert Hammink
27. Malcolm Mackey

Second Round
28. Lucious Harris
29. Sherron Mills
30. Gheorghe Muresan
31. Evers Burns
32. Alphonso Ford
33. Eric Riley
34. Darnell Mee
35. Ed Stokes
36. John Best
37. Nick Van Exel
38. Conrad McRae
39. Thomas Hill
40. Richard Manning
41. Anthony Reed
42. Adonis Jordan
43. Josh Grant
44. Alex Holcombe
45. Bryon Russell
46. Richard Petruska
47. Chris Whitney
48. Kevin Thompson
49. Mark Buford
50. Marcelo Nicola
51. Spencer Dunkley
52. Mike Peplowski
53. Leonard White
54. Byron Wilson

Anfernee Hardaway, Chris Webber, Jamal Mashburn, Vin Baker, Allan Houston, Sam Cassell and Nick Van Exel have all been All-Stars, but only Cassell, Webber, Mashburn and Houston remain close to their best years - and with the exception of Cassell, they've all had injury troubles this year. Van Exel is still capable of being a starting point guard, but he's also battling injuries. Vin and Penny's stories are well-known.

Bobby Hurley almost died in a car accident that ultimately derailed his career after a good college career at Duke. Isaiah Rider had a few good years but wore out his welcome with his legal troubles and bad attitude. The Shawn Bradley Experiment never lived up to being a second overall draft choice.

Lindsey Hunter, Calbert Cheaney, Rodney Rogers, George Lynch, Scott Burrell, Lucious Harris and Bryon Russell are or were solid role players, most of whom have had a couple of above average seasons here or there.

All in all, it wasn't a completely terrible draft, though a few of the lottery picks have had fairly disappointing careers given their first few years in the league.

Thanks for clearing that up Andrew (Y) :D

maybe this was the draft where people started off great, then injuries de-railed them or they just disappeared.(eg. Isiah Rider,Acie Earl)

Agreed. The talent was there, but only a few of the players are still All-Star calibre players (with only one of them named to the All-Star squad this year). 17 players from the 1993 Draft are still in the league though (18 if you count the recently waived Chris Mills).

Magius, I think the 1999 draft should not be in the top five, but that's my opinion.
Marion, B. Davis, A. Miller, Brand are really good players but they still have a lot to prove. They haven't done anything special yet (except being in the USA team that losed against Spain, Argentina and Yugoslavia).
