Of course Dexter wants a normal life. But he can't have one. That's his tragedy. Every time he tries to get close to someone something bad happens.
Rudy - Accepted him for who he is. But asked him to make an impossible choice. Dexter had to kill him to protect Debra.
Lila - Taught him to take control of his life. Ended up ruining his relationship with Rita and almost killed her kids. Dexter had to kill her to protect his family. (Even though she moved to France)
Miguel - Dexter thought he was a friend, but turned out to just be manipulating him for his own gain. Dexter had to kill him because he wasn't using Harry's code anymore.
Rita - Tried to have a family life with her and her kids. Because of Dexter's obsession with Trinity, she got caught in the crossfire of his double life and got killed.
Lumen - Helping her get revenge against the rapists somewhat helped Dexter get over the guilt he felt for Rita's death.
He thought they had a real connection, but once she got closure she lost the need to continue killing and couldn't stay with Dexter anymore.

2 years of marriage is a long time in Hollywood? Hope it doesn't affect the show too much.
