Expansion Draft for Charlotte

Mon Feb 02, 2004 8:34 pm

NEW YORK -- The Charlotte Bobcats begin building their roster when an expansion draft is held June 22, unless the NBA Finals goes to a Game 7.

The NBA announced the date Friday, with a move-back date of June 23.

Each of the 29 NBA teams will be allowed to protect eight players.

Under rules set by the NBA Board of Governors, the Bobcats' payroll will be limited to two-thirds of the salary cap in 2004-05 and three-quarters of the cap in '05-06.

Charlotte will pick fourth in the 2004 draft but will be eligible for the first overall pick in 2005.

This gives me an idea for a game. I'll have to post it in a new topic though so as not to flood this one.

I wonder which team will suffer the most through this draft? The Kings?Dallas? You can only secure 8 players and the rest are on the bubble and could be taken away from you.

If the Bobcats can only pick one player per team, then it won't be so bad. Deep teams still stand a chance of losing a good player since they can only protect 8 players (which in most cases will be a projected starting five and the three best reserves), but it wouldn't be as bad as the Bobcats being able to select 3 or 4 players from any team.

You never know they may pick up a gem or 2 from teams who leave a player unprotected to get rid of thier contract.

Absolutely. The Bobcats might avoid such players though, as they'll have a smaller cap than the other 29 NBA teams for the first couple of years.

The Bobcats have said they want young players, and know that teams will be leaving unproductive.overpaid players with big contracts available. The thing is that the Bobcats can waive and player drafted without it affecting their cap, so they will try and makes deals with teams to give them 3million and a draft pick to take a player from their roster. Therefore the team gets rid of that contract and the Bobs don't have to keep the big contract.

The Bobs are already making preliminary rosters and predicting what teams might be trying to do and how they can use it to their advantage to get draft picks etc.
