Can you guess what player had these comments in his pre-draft scouting report?
"Garnering some modest praise as a high schooler, he stunned the ACC..."
"...instead of acting within a team framework, he dribbled the ball too much and dribbled it off his foot several times. He also got called for charging on breaks instead of passing. His defense was hideous, allowing several FSU fastbreaks."
"While not a great ballhandler, his quickness made his crossover a devastating weapon."
"He can't do any of this stuff two halves in a row, much less two games in a row or for 82 games, and when he goes bad he'll kill you before you can send someone to the scorer's table."
"...he has awesome potential, He's like Tracy McGrady except even more so, and worth a major gamble."
"He does not have a what I would call NBA skills yet. He has a decent jumper and can run with the best of them. Although he is a defensive liability ( as with most freshman ) he reminds of Larry Hughes..."
"With the lack of a true dominant number one player in this year's draft, ??? has the chance to move all the way up to being the very first pick..."
"His strength will be an obvious advantage in the post-game NBA teams love to generate. Anyone who can match his strength will have their hands full trying to rise with or run with ???. As he develops he stands to become a match-up nightmare for opposing teams. "
"He annihilated Kris Lang..."
"No one could outmuscle him..."
"some people asked why he wasn't starting over ???. Most of those critics hadn't seen some of his lesser performances. "
Since being drafted...this player has yet to make an NBA All-Star Team...although he has competed in an All-Star Weekend event.
Feel free to discuss...I'll post the answer tomorrow. But don't give away his name. PM me if you want me to confirm the answer.
If this game is fun then we can play more often.

hmm
interesting.. quick crossover, talented post player, i'm guessing a guard/sf guy.... explosive inconsistent, not great defensively
no 1 could outmuscle him? hmm
I can't think of a guy like that.. i'm guessing he is quite new since he is compared to Larry Hughes.. Maybe my guess Jason Richardson?
I don't know any college ball stuff.. so ya

Dajuan Wagner? Demarr Johnson? Jamal Crawford? Mike Miller?
I don't know if Johnson and Jamal have been in the All-Star weekend. If it's a guy who left as a frosh, I guess guys that are guards or swingmen who left after their first year.
Does he have to be in the ACC though?
Wed Jan 21, 2004 11:20 am
my guess is J-Rich
Wed Jan 21, 2004 12:02 pm
Nice idea EG.
I know the answer.
Wed Jan 21, 2004 1:37 pm

i didn't think..

To people who've figured out the answer...stop posting it. You're making me delete the posts. It ruins the game for other people who are still figuring it out. PM me if you want to check an answer.
And yes...that means if one of your posts vanished...then you had the right answer.

yer im gonna say Jason Richardson
Thu Jan 22, 2004 12:59 am
I figured out who it is. I wont tell.
I guess i'll double check with EG.
Oh Yeah, for all of you that think its J-Rich, he went to Michigan State(Not an ACC school).

Your answer...
COREY MAGGETTE
-Played at Duke University in the ACC
-Came off the bench as a freshman at Duke, but still declared for the Draft
-Many people thought he could go #1 because there was no clear #1 pick in the 1999 draft
-Was known as much in college for his strength as he was for his leaping ability and speed
-Started off as a bad defender but developed into a very good one in the NBA.
PEOPLE WHO GOT IT RIGHT:
1. fgrep15 (also the fastest)
2. Ben
3. Ruffryder8
Shane came close, narrowing it down to Wilcox and Maggette, but ultimately chose Wilcox.
gloveguy had the right answer, but posted it instead of PMing it to me so I can't give him credit.
That seemed fun...so let's play again!
Can you name the player who had these comments in his pre-Draft scouting report?
"he was not heavily recruited. And for good reason. He was in pathetic shape, had never played against any real competition, and only had his ?'?" 2?? lbs going for him. Unfortunately that body was completely uncoordinated and rather flabby."
"...finally emerged into the national spotlight by leading his team nearly single handedly into the Final Four, dismantling highly regarded centers Tim Duncan, Marcus Camby, and George Zidek (although they lost to UCLA)."
"He led the league in scoring, rebounding and probably FG% to win Big 8 POY."
"The plane ride to the Big Apple was his first. Legend has it that someone offered him a piece of gum for his ears. A few minutes later he asked them how was supposed to fit it in."
"...one of the all time greats in the Big Eight, right up their with Manning and Tisdale."
"He can dominate anyone under 260 lbs."
"Once he forced a game against Missouri into overtime by hitting a half court shot and spent a few minutes proving to reporters that it wasn't a fluke at the next practice making a few more of the same shot..."
"Legendary coach Hank Iba said he 'needed a bra' and others compared his motor skills to a 'young puppy.'"
"...his arm's as thick as most people's thighs...he looks like he lifts tractors to work out."
"I'm sure a lot of people will compare him to Montross. Same size (only ??? is 20lbs heavier), ???, quickness and haircut."
"Hakeem and Robinson will school him. Ewing and Mourning will beat him by a little. Shaq will have to use quickness and skill since there is no way he can outmuscle him. All others could try praying."
"Give him a marksman and some scrubs who play good defense and look at him go."
"Of course it is more likely that he will be picked by Toronto or Vancouver...but I'm pulling for Dallas or Milwaukee..."
Fgrep15 said that the last one was "too easy"...so we'll see if he can make it two in a row...or if anyone can beat him to the punch.
Remember...PM me if you want to guess...but feel free to discuss here as long as you don't give the answer away too much...
Thu Jan 22, 2004 6:25 am
I think the comparison with Montross and the team that would pick him in the draft are the best keys to this "mistery..."
Thu Jan 22, 2004 6:26 am
i'm thinking it's Danny Fortson.. if not, Tractor Traylor..
Thu Jan 22, 2004 6:33 am
You guys need to look at the conference...the Big 8, now the Big 12...if I remember right, the original Big 8 was Kansas, Iowa State, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas State, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, and Texas A & M were added in something like 1993 or '94...just narrowing down the colleges for some.
EG, you'll have my response...

Fgrep15 said that the last one was "too easy"...so we'll see if he can make it two in a row...or if anyone can beat him to the punch.
That one was even easier...and I'll never beat anyone to the punch since I check the forum once late in the day...it makes me

and want a hug...

Is there a big 8 anymore? I'm not sure who it is yet.
EDIT:Nevermind, just read Mr. Shanes post.
Is this guy still playing?
Thu Jan 22, 2004 4:00 pm
Jahadi White
can't spell
sounds like him.. is George Town in Big 8 tho?
Fri Jan 23, 2004 12:01 am

Georgetown is Big East...see my post for the schools that were in the Big 8.

It should narrow it down quite a bit, as it was pre-1996

"Of course it is more likely that he will be picked by Toronto or Vancouver...but I'm pulling for Dallas or Milwaukee..."
http://www.nba.com/raptors/history/199596.htmlThe raptors entered the NBA in the 1995-96 season. So if this guy was gonna be picked by one of 4 teams including the raptors, he was in the 1995 draft( the raptors picked Damon Stoudamire...) So just find a big guy that was drafted amongst the top picks in the 95 draft...[/quote]

Excellent deductive reasoning Jimi.
And your answer!
Bryant "Big Country" Reeves
-While he came into college completely overweight...he was also very strong and dominated a lot of smaller players.
-Played for Oklahoma State in the Big 8
-Drafted by Vancouver in the 1995 Draft
Yesterday's winner was ALEX ITALO!
Also guessing correctly! (in order)
2. gloveguy
3. ko8e4mvp
4. Ben
5. fgrep15
6. Laddas
7. Jimi Hendrix
Shane came close...but ultimately chose fellow class of '95 Big 8 Center Greg Ostertag over Reeves.

Okay! Mystery Player #3! This should be interesting...I think it's harder and easier at the same time.
Can you name the current or former NBA player who had these comments in his predraft scouting report?
"I've heard that the late first round is the worst he will do..."
"??? is very quick and has great hands and a real soft touch."
"At 215 (and with little muscle) he is going to get pushed around a lot."
"...6.5 blocks a game..."
"He is also a great passer, being compared to Bill Walton"
"??? is boldly trying to go where no one since Darryl Dawkins has gone..."
"???...has had grade problems as a long ago as his Junior year..."
"Strengths: Potential"
"Isiah Thomas has already stated publicly that if ??? came out he would take him with the 6th pick in the draft."
I think some people will know this immediately and others might be stumped.
PM me with your guesses. Feel free to post your reasoning here as long as it doesn't give away the answer too much.
Fri Jan 23, 2004 4:12 pm
Isiah Thomas said...? Hmm, well Isiah Thomas had something to do with Indiana, but he was coach, nothing more... or was he? i dunno, well i think i have an answer, i'll PM you EG.
Although i think Isiah Thomas had something to do with Atlanta management in the past... or maybe he was close to having something to do with them. Dunno.
Fri Jan 23, 2004 4:32 pm
Think Isiah Thomas as Raptors GM
Sat Jan 24, 2004 2:48 am
I'm thikin' about Marcus Camby...but i'm not sure

You have a very important clue here...
If you are a slim player that'll be get pushed around a lot, you probably won't have a stat like that playing in college basketball.
